286.6 | The question is, does it work for ya? | CSC32::G_HOUSE | Slime Devil | Fri Oct 21 1988 17:40 | 11 |
| Back on the topic...
I like to see bands do diverse material, but it seems like that
would make it difficult to get jobs. If you do covers, don't club
owners want you to play something dancable for the most part?
It'd seem like if you played a really wide variety of music, you'd
turn off a lot of the crowd. Have you guys ever experienced this,
prc?

| The way I see it you have 3 choices when you start out with a band:
1) You do all radio covers. This will get you into a club in a
hurry. But after a while you start sounding like a LOUD radio.
But you can find plenty of work if you don't mind traveling.
You just loose some of your identity along the way.
2) You do a wide variety of material. This is usually a result
of having a bunch of different ideas as far as where the band
is going. So it ends up being a band playing *their* favorites
instead of playing to the crowd. Now this will satisfy some
of the people some of the time, but it does have a serious draw
back. Say a couple are there, the guy gets into it, the girl
doesn't. As the law of averages would have it, 2 people will
leave the club. And when you think about it, even though most
people don't like labels, if you're going to sell a product,
you must know what aisle to stick it on. Would you buy a 4
wheel drive Rolls Royce with a VW engine, a bit do diverse.
I feel with this kind of angle you end up selling the band
short, and you'll be doomed to playing local bars to your
*own* little crowd every week - no future here.
3) You can play a mix of originals and covers. Play a fairly tight
group of covers and let your originals give you the diversity.
Play a couple of crowd pleasers each set and back them up with
your material. See, if you do ALL covers you'll never get a
record deal. If you're TOO diverse, no one really knows what
you're trying to say with you music other than "?". So I think
the most profitable choice would be this one. Scary picks
door #3.

286.8 | Metal original or copy ? | ASAHI::COOPER | For The Devil Sends The Beast With Wrath | Mon Oct 24 1988 08:41 | 13 |
| Gotta agree with Mr. Scary on that.
Seems that 2EZ (of late) is playing abut a 60/40 mix of
originals/covers. This seems to work okay for us, since we tend
to write a lot of tunes with no provocation. 2EZ doesn't seem to
care if we get famous or not (although inside, I think we all wanna
be rock stars)...
Anyhow, if ya go to AJ's (the local metal establishment), all you
hear is bands that do covers...I've always liked to be different,
and I guess this is my chance, eh ?

| re: .9 That's great to hear that it works...I'd like to see more
of this.
BTW: re: .1 Do you mean "Last Caress" from Danzig? (which Metallica
did on Garage Days Re-revisited)? That's a cool tune.

My band is doing a mostly "cover" show, with
a few originals mixed in. The diversity comes from
the type each song is. You can play original top
40 and cover metal or vice-versa, or any combination.
Everyone wants to tap thier feet, sway thier
hips or clap thier hands to the music. The trick
is to not let it get boring....for anyone........
We try to please the majority by doing a little
of everything (well, maybe not EVERYTHING) and
a lot of Rock and Roll.
I hafta agree with Mr. Scary
about the three roads and inevitable
destinations.
.......it's a long way to the TOP if you .....
