Yeah, but we just try to ignore him! 8^)
Truthfully, although Yngwie is very technically talented, I never
listen to his music. It bores the hell out of me! All I hear are
scales and progressions over and over - while it may be fast, it is
not exciting.
I prefer Yngwie when he was with the band Alcatrazz - I have their
live album 'Live Sentence' with Yngwie on guitar and Graham Bonnet
on vocals - it is much better than Ynwie's solo stuff. It has his
fast playing, but in a rock/pop context (they cover Rainbow's
"All Night Long" and "Since You've Been Gone").
Besides, I can never spell his name right! 8^)

For albums that are good check out Yngwie J. Malmsteen "Rising

far the best is(IMO) Alcatrazz "NO Parole From Rock N Roll"

| Ok,
First off, let's do a YJM doscography for those who don't know about
him:
Steeler
Alcatrazz - No Parole from Rock n Roll
Alcatrazz - Live Sentence
Rising Force
Rising Force - Marching Out
Rising Force - Trilogy
Rising Force - Oddesy
misc:
Live Marching Out EP
STARS project
Ok, I heard the bootleg tapes of Yngwie from Sweden WAY before he
even moved to the states!! (see what being in rnr will do for ya?)
Anyway, I was blown away when I first heard him. No one had played
so far AND so claenly before. Also, he was ripping off these Bach
and Paganini licks and it was wild.
OK, so I think Yng's best guitar playing/song writing is on No Parole.
The writing is weak on Steeler, but after Alcatrazz Yngwie got major
tendonitis in his left hand and ever since then his playing has
been a little more sloppy. Also, he has a big ego (I've met the
a$$hole before), and I think the pulicity went to his head. Now
i don't think he writes as well. His last two Rising Force albums
I think are crap!
Anyway, now every guitar player in the world wants to sound like
Yngwie...they're all cloning him. Its a drag i wish sometimes the
F__ker never even bothered playing guitar.
I predict Yngwie will be a has been in two years, and will never
have a hit single and will never headline a major tour.
You know the joke, what's Yngwie Malmsteen mean in swedish?

I feel that if you are to be considered one of the best
guitarists you should be able to do it all.
Speed, Feeling, Great improvision for example.
People like Hendrix, Beck, Blackmore and Clapton paved the way
through the 60's and 70's.
People of today like Joe Satriani, Vinny and Gary Moore as
well as Eddy V. H. pretty much have it all.
Let's not forget Roy Clark and even Glenn Campbell can play
a mean guitar.
Blues guitarists like Joe Gibbons and Johnny Winter.
People like Harrison who is a pretty efficient guitarist
is not necessary one of the greatest. But, he is one of the finer
songwriters.
I guess what I'm trying to say is if a person is rated just
on his chops then he should have it all. And if he is rated as a
musician then other aspects should be considered.

Here's a review for the Malmsteen gig in November, at the Dominion,
London.
It was extracted from Metal Hammer, without permission
And on the eighth day, the Lord said "Let their be very fast
guitarists" and there was.. Yngwie J. Malmsteen and his very fast
guitar playing antics. Don't believe me ? No I don't either.
Try telling that to all the punters who'd come to be dazzled
by Yngwie's fretboard flying digits. Cue more hate mail as Mark
declares Yngwie is to be "crap live". All credit to Joe Lynn
Turner and his Rising Wig. The man deserves better than this,
the man deserves some respect, he deserves his name on the
posters somewhere, he deserves some songs y'know.
Yngwie has pathetically little decent material for a
supposedly headlining act. the band flirts with melody and
harmony on occasion, but in general Turner's pissing in the wind,
unable to flex his vocal talent, cause there's nothing there for
him to sing. And I don't give a damn about how many copies of
the Bible, the Koran and any other documents Yngwie's willing to
swear an oath over, his onstage mannerisms owe more to Rainbow
era Blackmore than is reasonable outside of the realms of
Spitting Image on a Sunday night on the telly. Wait a minute,
maybe that's it! Maybe Yngwie's taking the mick and at the end of
one gig he's going to drop the Blackmoreisms and grin and say
"now this is me", the way Mike Yarwood used to at the end of his
TV show. Crazy name, crazy guy!
Or maybe not. Sorry Yng-fans, but all this widdly squiddly
guitar heroics leaves me colder than the kind of cold stares Liz
Evans reserves for Lisa Dominique. The very next night you'd
have found me grinning from ear to ear at Wembly (spiritual home
for many a Scotsman), where Steve Vai, the only man in the world
who can get away with a fluorescent green guitar, made his guitar
talk, sing and make noises no guitar should ever make and I
didn't get bored once, not once. With Yngwie there was never the
possibility of a smile, let alone a grin. Its a grey world these
'Gods's gift to guitarists' musos inhabit (unless your name is Mr
Vai) and its grey songs they play with grey conviction.
Like fellow Swedes 'Europe'. Yngwie is at best pastiche of
familiar sounds that works remarkably well in front an audience
who isn't too fussy about how much flair and originality is
thrown in with the well worn musical cliches. How Joe Lynn
Turner copes with glancing over his shoulder every few minutes to
see Yngwie throwing all Ritchie's shapes I don't know, it must be
deja vu city for the poor guy. This retro-rock museum piece is
not is not the way forward for metal. On the ninth day the Lord
said "I only gave you Ygwie to prove I had a sense of humour, and
you fell for it". Here endeth today's session.

Guitar Player. I read it and it seemed like he's trying real hard to
dispel the reputation he's acquired as an egomaniac. There were
several points in the interview where he seemed to be trying to justify
the way he operates in a band situation. My feeling was that it didn't
really work. He didn't come off like the total jerk he has in some
previous interviews I've read with him, but still didn't seem like the
nicest of people.
He said that he was not very happy with the live recording, as they
only had the opportunity to record one of several shows and he thought
it was a bad night. Apparently they didn't fix it up in the studio
either.
He's currently working on his next studio album.

He does not have a very clean sound out of his

like Impellitiri, but his style leaves something

| I got a chance to throw in the 'Live from Leningrad' disk last night, as I
was playing around with my Atari PC (trying to get this baby up and running).
I was a little suprised - I sorta liked it! Yes, there were masturbatory
guitar pieces in there (whaddya expext from Yngiwe?), but there were also some
decent songs on there. (Actually, all the best songs were the four that were
co-written with Joe Lynn Turner.)
And speaking of JLT, I think that's one of the reason's I liked this one over
previous Yngiwe albums - Joe Lynn's voice isn't that great, but there is
something about it I like!
Overall, I'm not sure I'd reccomend someone spending $10 on this thing, but it
could be worse. And this is probably the best Yngwie album I've heard to date.

| I also listened to the first album recently and was thinking about it.
For it's time it was quite revolutionary and obviously he's an
outstanding player technically, but I have maintained all along that
it's totally derivative of many classical pieces.
It kind of amazes me that many of the same people that belittle many
bands for being derivative of an earlier bands distinctive sound, then
almost in the same breath praise someone like Yngwie for his "unique"
sound. I bet if Bach were around, he wouldn't be hearing anything real
unique in Yngwies music! It amazes me even more that Yngwie himself
obviously considers his music original and unique and has the nerve to
berate other musicians that utilize the same musical basis (classical
baroque period) and influences that he did.
Now before someone decides to blast me, I will continue in saying that
I enjoy listening to Malmsteens music (at least the instrumental
pieces) quite a lot and own several of his albums.

| RE: -1 and others...
When you say "Yngwie's first album", do you mean Rising Force, or
Steeler?
Yngwie's FIRST album was with Steeler, under the album by the same
name. His second release was "No parole from rock n roll" by
Alcatrazz...his technical 3rd album was "Live sentence", a live album
by Alcatrazz, released when Yngwie said he was gonna split the band!
So, in actuality, Rising Force is Yngwie's 4th US release!

Q: What animal was Moje (how this relates to Yngwie I do not know!).
Q: What is the first name of Yngwie guitar tech (its not Geoffery

Thats the only two I can think off from the top of my head - theres
one more which I'll bring in tomorrow.

Eclipse (instrumental)

Marching Out

Trilogy --> Odyssey

Eclipse
Certainly , his guiter technique very progressed ( I could play most

but songs not progressed .

He cannot use talent of members effectively .

| Well, the biggest problem with an Ynwgie record is where to promote it to?
Rock radio won't touch it, because there aren't any 'hits' (read: formula
rock) songs on the records.
Classical radio certainly wouldn't even consider playing it.
Clubs won't play - its usually not even remotely danceable.
The only places left are underground radio, press, and live shows. But he's
too well known for a lot of underground radio. There is a lot of press on him,
but most of its negative (no one likes his ego). And he always seems to get
good opening slots on tours, so that's not the companies fault.
Seems to me that if he really wants Polygram to support him, he should go and
get some outside songwriters, a big-name producer, and deliver an album that
is radio-ready. Until then, I think he should be happy with what he's got!

| For those of you youngsters not familiar with Buddy Rich, he is widely
regarded to be one of the best big-band jazz drummers ever. I think
a lot heavy metal "flash" drumming has origins going back to Buddy
Rich, who was the first drummer I can recall to really "feature" the
drums to the extent that it's done nowadays (although drum solos were
fairly common in the swing era as well).
However, he was also known to have a tremendous ego, probably the
biggest in music that I've ever heard although it sounds like Yngwie
comes pretty damn close.
He never wasted an opportunity to tell (or "show") you how good he was,
or how much better he was than someone else.

I can't remember which guy it was offhand, but when he died, one of
the other great big-band drummers told this story about how they played
a gig together.
The other drummer was determined to show up Buddy Rich and worked out
this really complicated thing. The story goes that he played it,
expecting Rich to be impressed, but Rich just sat down at his own
kit and played it... with one stick!!!

Hey there,
I am conducting an aggressive subscription campaign for Rising Force.
You are being invited to join because in the past six months, you have
expressed an interest in neo-classical metal and/or Yngwie Malmsteen
somewhere on the net.
Announcing Rising Force - the neo-classical metal forum:
The purpose of this forum is to provide a means of communication for
those appreciating the incorporation of classical music into today's
rock/metal. While this was the in thing to do for guitarists a few
years back, the only ones left playing it and listening to it are those
who truly love it.
There are bits and pieces of threads occuring about the topic on the
Internet, and this is an attempt to let us express our opinions without
flames like "they don't play with feeling, listen to blues instead".
While the current title - Rising Force - might suggests an
Yngwie-centric forum, and perhaps he has been the most successful with
the genre, there are many others worth discussing. For instance most of
the Shrapnel Records catalog, some Leviathan, etc. Another goal is to
publicize little known musicians - (how many of you have heard of Dan
Dalley) who are playing our songs.
Neo-classical metal has more popularity in Europe and Japan than in
North America, so I'm especially looking forward to submissions from
those lands. I also would like to include in our discussions bands such
as Helloween, Lillian Axe, Dream Theater, Extreme, Europe, etc. who
throw in a classical melody/progression/solo here and there.
I will be the editor of the mailing list. Frequency of mailings will be
determined by volume. As we ramp up subscription, a regular schedule
will be published.
Send mail to [email protected] or reply.
I'm of course doing this in my spare time, not implicating Intel.
Feel the Rising Force (usually I avoid cliches like the plague :-)

Subj: Happened at Yngwie show? Section: Guitar World
To: all Saturday, September 03, 1994 11:25:16 PM
From: Rick Beem, 76450,3246 #1920
I went to a Yngwie show in Cincinnati on July 26, 1994. The show was
stopped mid-way because Yngwie got pissed at the drummer and threw his
guitar at him. The guitar hit the drum kit and messed it up really
bad. Yngwie then followed/chased the drummer back stage. The singer
was courteous enough to come out and announce that they had no drummer
and couldn't continue.
Doesn't anyone know why Yngwie was angry that night, and if the drummer
finished the tour, or if the tour was canceled?
It was still a great show, regardless. But, talking with a few other
people in other cities, it seems that this same type of behavior has
occured at other shows. I wish he would get a grip on his anger, else
venue owners will stop booking him.

| I've often prided myself on being able to separate the person from the
music. I've defended David Lee Roth in many a notesfile even though
people seem to love to hate him. Fact is, they're wimpy without him.
However, two people I simply WILL not support in any way or fashion
(i.e. I will copy their tapes rather contribute one cent to their egos)
are:
Yngwie and Sinnead O'Connor
Yngwie's ego is just out of control. He was influential, I can't deny
him that, but NEARLY as much as about a dozen other guys. And unlike
Van Halen and Hendrix, there are now guys who are "doing Yngwie" better
than Yngwie.
I.E. some of the people he's influenced are much better than he is
musically. I don't think ANYONE does Hendrix better than Hendrix, nor
Van Halen better than Van Halen (although SRV and EJ come close on
the Hendrix count (Frank Marino, the veteran would-be hendrix clone
gets only a "dishonerable mention")) and I'd have to say that Steve
Vai AT TIMES shows some of Van Halen's panache but he is not very
consistent (IMHO).
I also don't think it's fair to say that Vai is a Van Halen imitator,
it's more that I see a lot of similarities (lots of "personality" in
their playing).
