247.0. "Heart" by RDGENG::GREID () Wed Sep 21 1988 12:31

It's time for a note on one of my favourite AOR groups HEART.

I have only three of their albums a BEST of Double album, Heart
and Bad Animals, and also the video singles release.

I think they have an excellent sound and Ann Wilson has a stunning
voice, Howard Leese is a good lead guitarist and together with
Nancy, Denni Carmassi and Mark Andes make a helluva five-peice.

I personally find Nancy one of the most attractive women i have
ever seen (down boy), and i hope they carry on for many more years.

Favourite tunes are 'Want You So Bad', 'There's That Girl', 'If
Looks Could Kill', 'Never and 'What About Love'.

Putting aside the obvious sexual comments about Ann and Nancy, the
video they have put out stands tall in my collection and tracks
such as 'The Wolf' are definite HM tracks.

    What do you think.......?

I think i could carry on writing for ever......

    Sigh,

    Prince Of The Dawn.

I've seen them a couple of times, right up front once!
Nancy is even better looking in person. Great show to see,
no matter what kind of music you're into.

Anne looks like the Stay-Puff Marshmallo Man now. She says she
eats when she is depressed, and she is depressed because she can't
    find a boyfriend.

I'll volunteer! I don't care if she's a little big - I'd love to spend
time with anyone who can sing like her! And maybe I cna help her work
off some of that excess weight! 8^)

Well, since Heart probably belongs here as much as Bon Jovi, I can make
a few comments. I am a big fan of all their material while they were
on Epic Records. But the two on Capitol ('Heart' and 'Bad Animals') are
both very weak and overproduced. ("The Wolf" is the only decent rock song
on there.)

My favorite album of their's is probably their least known, 'Private
Audition'. This has a couple great rockers ("City's Burning" and "The
Situation") along with some beautiful ballads ("Angels", "Perfect
Strangers").

Ann is definately a bit on the big side. Watch
the videos and see what happens every time they
show her face (they never show the rest of her).
They stretch the film so her face looks skinnier.

Rember when they came to Mass. and WAAF (radio) had a contest.
The object was to guess Ann(e)s weight. I have never heard a radio
station get so many calls. To say she is a little big is an
understatement but she does have one hell of a voice.

BTW, I spent a couple days with them about 5 years ago (when they were
on the Heart/Kansas tour). Both Ann and Nancy were among the nicest
people I've met in the music industry.

I missed *that* one! How long ago was this?
Back when WAAF was good (with Harvey Warfield and
Jeff Berlin)? Sounds like something they would
                pull.

Well, they're not called the first ladies of R&R for nothing.

I think "If Looks Could Kill" is their best song ever. It is so
... (only word I can think of is *intense*). I'll bet there was
a personal story behind that song. Does anyone know?

Actually it was on the Bob and Zip show. It was pretty outrageous.
It was after Harvey Warfield left. He (HW) is now working on a
soft rock/golden oldies type of station. Definitely out of place.

Heart is nothing short of sensational. I think Ann Wilson has the
best voice in rock and roll. I currently own five heart albums:

       1) Little Queen.
       2) Passionworks.
       3) Baby la Strange.
       4) Heart
       5) Bad Animals.

I know of at least two more, Private Auditions and Dogs and
    Butterflies.
This band can belt out some hard driving rock and roll and turn
around to play some heart-touching ballards.
BTW, which album is "Magic Man" on?

I saw them at Great Woods this past June. It appeared that Ann has
lost some weight, but has a bit to go. It was a great show, they
really rocked. I think Howard Leese is one of the most under-rated
guitarists around. He is excellent. This was the second time I've
seen them live and I wouldn't hesitate for a second to go see them
    anywhere, anytime.

Hey, this is one I have to write about 8^)! Heart is the only
group that have followed from album one to present. I have seen
them four times in concert (the last time front row center). For
those of you who have to put down Ann because of her wieght I want
you to know it is because she has a heart (no pun intended) condition.
This is another reason why Nancy is doing more of the singing recently.
They do not know if Ann is going to live much longer or make a
    recovery.
The girls have always been special to me for their music and
their lyrics. I'm glad they have gotten away from Sue Ennis now,
I think she was the biggest factor (along with Nancy's drug problem)
for the group having a downfall for a couple of years.

I want to write more, but don't have the time, until next chance,

Hmmm....obviously it is just a matte rof opinin, but I think that Sue
Ennis wrote some of their best material with them. Two of my fave
Heart albums are 'Private Audition' and 'Passionworks', which were
those 'downfall years' you are talking about. It is the material they
are now doing that I hate! Before, they had a great individual sound and
style that belonged only to them. But now they sound just like so
many other pop/rock acts (Starship, Bryan Adams, etc.).

I heard a song on the radio this am, a duet with Ann Wilson (can't
mistake that voice!) and some guy. I think the name of the song is
"Surrender" or like that. It was really good. Has anyone else heard
it or know anything about it? Is it new/old, on what album???

The only song I know off-hand that fits is a duet between Ann Wilson
and Mike Reno (of Loverboy). It is called "Almost Paradise", and is
on the soundtrack to Footloose.

But it could also be a new song that just came out.....

247.32good and bad - review of last night's showQRYCHE::STARRBeauty and SadnessThu Nov 18 1993 09:4125
Short review of last night's show:

No opening act, the band came on and did a 40-minute acoustic set, took a
20-minute break, then came back for an electric set.

Some of the songs played in the acoustic set included "Dog And Butterfly",
"Dreamboat Annie" (preceded by a short acoustic solo from Nancy), "These
Dreams" and a great version of Led Zeppelin's "Battle For Evermore".

The majority of the second set seemed to be material from the new album
(which was just released on Tuesday). But they did manage a few more
classics, including "Barracuda" and "Crazy On You". They did a slow cover
of "Love Hurts", and for the encore an acoustic cover of Bob Dylan's "Ring
The Bells". Of the new material, the two standouts for me were "Rage",
which featured a growling guitar riff that reminded me of Alice In Chains,
and "Back To Avalon".

Overall, I think the show was poorly paced, with too much new material and
not enough older stuff. They skipped over a lot of classics/hits, including
"Magic Man", "Kick It Out", "Bebe Le Strange", "Straight On", "What About
Love", "Where Will You Run To", "Never", "If Looks Could Kill", "Little
Queen", etc. etc. The highlights of the show were very good, but not enough
to entertain you for two hours.
