| Hi, Mark! Welcome to heavy metal notes! I hope all the acromyns and
such we use doesn't cause your DECtalk trouble. I hope you enjoy
noting here. I didn't reply earlier because I didn't want to get
ragged on for putting unrelated notes into the "Roster Note" (and, yes,
Shawn, you ARE a pecker).
On the classic metal (hard rock, acid rock, whatever you want to
call it), I love the old stuff. Hendrix, Cream, the Doors, they're
all great! I also love a lot of the newer music such as Metallica,
Racer X, and Joe Satriani. I'm not sure I prefer one over the other.
Certainly some of the new bands are, as previously mentioned, headed
for becomming classic!

193.3 | I like that old ........ | PAR5::C_DENOPOULOS | | Mon Aug 15 1988 08:48 | 11 |
| Classic Metal is the ultimate Metal. Sure, I have some tapes from
some of the newer bands, but on quite a few of them there are only
one or two songs that I like. For instance, "Welcome to the Jungle"
is a great song, but the rest of the album, and this is only my
opinion, isn't worth the price of the tape. It was always the opposite
for me with the classic metal. There may be one or two songs that
I don't like but that's it.
If I had to chose between my classic collection and my newer stuff,
I would trash the new stuff without a second thought.

There are some classic tunes out there that to this day still kick
a** but whats wrong with liking newer music. I love most of Led
Zeps' music but I also love Metallica. In one way or another they're
all related. Without the guitar pioneering work of Jimi Hendrix I'm
quite sure most of what we listen to today would'nt exist. There
should be no arguements as to which type of music is better because
deep down they all have the same roots. And more importantly..as
long as its good who cares how old or new it is? 8^)
Nuff said.

Hows it going Mark?

its still music.

193.8 | not def to new music just donot always listen | RAVEN1::LOWE | | Mon Aug 15 1988 11:50 | 37 |
| It took me three times but I finally figured out how to get in to
these notes. If this is in the wrong place one of you can fix it
for me. I am glad that some of you agree with me that classic rock
is the best. However, I am afraid that some of you have charactorized
me as a deaf classic rocker who refuses to listen to the new groups
and give them a chance. This was a mistake. Most of the tapes
I have made over the past year are by new groups. The reason I
did not mention them in my first entry is because I want to be known
as one who prefers the classic stuff to the new stuff. Yet I have
many new favorites. I really like guns and Roses, the new VV invasion,
and the new Cinderella. I also like kingdom come because they remind
me of a modernday zep. I think that the new Def Leppard and Poison
tapes are excellent and will be around for awhile.
There are so many more groups around now than they were during the
Zep days that it is hard to determin which ones will stick and become
classics. I believfe that our kids will listen to groups like Def
Leppard and Van Halen and think they are classics.
Almost every new group today can be traced back to one of the classic
groups. This does not include groups like Guns and Roses who have
there own unique sound. In my opinion the new groups that do not
sound like older ones will be popular in the future.
It may seem like every possibility in rock and roll has been conquered
but this will never happen. Therefore I am happy to sit back and
listen to the classics while at the same time checking out the new
sounds.
Let me know if there are some new groups that I am not aware of
who have a unique sound of there own. I will check them out. I
listen to Metal Shop every week and it helps some.
Now that I have clarified my musical tastes I am ready to disguss
any classic group or album that you would like. Maybe we can open
a new section for new groups.

Well, Pete, you're such a rebel. Fact is, include me in the
"enlightened" category. I'm with you. I love Metallica, the
Anthrax that I've heard, and S.O.D. is AWESOME. If I had more money
left each week, I'd buy some more of the HEAVY variety of metal.
Just what IS classic metal anyway? I'd like to hear what groups
are considered classic metal besides ZEP.

193.14 | here are a couple of my fave classics | HAZEL::STARR | You ain't nothin' but fine, fine, fine! | Mon Aug 15 1988 14:54 | 22 |
| Off the top of my head - some classic HM:
Deep Purple
Black Sabbath
Led Zeppelin
Cream
Humble Pie
Grand Funk Railroad
Alice Cooper
Iron Butterfly (ugh!)
Blue Cheer
The Who (listen to 'Live at Leeds' LP)
Jimi Hendrix
Aerosmith
Rolling Stones (mostly for attitude, not so much musically)
Queen (questionable call here, I admit, but the early stuff did kick butt)
Steppenwolf (made popular the term 'heavy metal')
I know people will come up with more than this, but it's a start. I also
didn't include pop/metal like BTO or Guess Who, etc.

Robin Trower (although he swayed between METALurgy and acid rock)
Two more to add to the list, which definately made an impression
on the foundation for HM.

In the interest of preserving our collective sanity,
I have deleted the following note (previously written in
all uppercase character, complete with several misspellings),
and reposted it here after cleaning it up. Let this be a
warning: I will not continue to provide this service for
noters too lazy to release the CAPS LOCK key!

Note 193.17 Classic Metal 17 of 17
RAVEN1::LOWE 22 lines 16-AUG-1988 14:15
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I agree with cook on the classic groups. I would like to include
the Eagles to the classic pop groups. They were great and when
they included Jo W on guitar they produced some hard rocking albums.
Hotel California is my favorite. As for the speed metal, I do like
a little of it. My neighbor is into it big and he gave me the Master
Of Puppits album. I listen to it when I have had a hard day and
feel like killing someone. The rest of it still reminds me of machines
and chainsaws. Perhaps it is suitable for construction workers
since they hear similar sounds all day while working. Nothing can
touch the classics.
What are your favorite albums? Mine include the first two Van Halens, the
White, Parinoid, the first Hendrix, all Zeps, Machinehead, Derrick
and the Dominoes (Layla), the first Boston, the Stones Hotrocks and
Rewined, all ACDC before 1981, both Beatles greatest hits, and many
more. Most of these can be found in my collection. What do you
think, Cook?

| What about Uriah Heep, Rush and in some way Yes with its Close to the
Edge ? There are also the new classics like Queensryche and Iron Maiden
to name only those two. Scorpions are also a great classic which still
lives well.
