188.0. "Moore, Gary" by ROCKON::RADLER () Thu Aug 04 1988 14:59

I didn't think it was fair to add Gary Moore's material in
Thin Lizzy because the guy is such a legend and really wasn't Thin
Lizzy. Phil Lynott was Thin Lizzy. Gary is one of the finest guitarists
and a legend especially in the European countries. He came at the
wrong time and really didn't catch on in the USA.

                    Here's his dicography

I saw this guy way back when with Def Leppard at
the Cape cod Colleseum (sp?). He had Ian Paice
at the time. He did put on a great show
(especially when he did End of the World).
                Krokus also played that show.

the vocalist on the live in japan album is John Sloman.I saw this
line-up live and I think it was the best band gary put together. He
was still playing the gibson les paul given to him by peter green
in those days ,and he really made the guitar sing.the highlights
of the show were "wishing well","parisiene walkways" and "..wait
    until tommorow..."
John Sloman was very low key in the line-up,which was a shame because
    he is an excellant vocalist.

I've been trying to pick up playing 'Gary Moore - the Loner' by
ear, and some bits are dead easy, and some bits are dead hard, so
I grabbed a video tape of it and paused it at the hard bits, so
I knew roughly where on the neck he was playing it, in context of
    the relevant notes.

Anybody got the music to it ?? I'd prefer it in TAB, but failing
that I could get by with standard music format.

I'll trade it for a GM 'Over the Hills and Far Away' solo :-)

I was just going through my collection the other the other day, and found
I had two Gary Moore songs. The first is on a Greg Lake solo LP, and is
called "Nuclear Attack" - great song! The second is a picture disk 45 that
is shaped like a huge guitar pick - anyone else ever seen this?

Gary is set to release a new studio album in January 1989 in the
UK. The album will be called 'After the War'. He is also due to
do a 4 date tour of the UK in March - the line up for the band is

    Gary Moore
    Bob Daisley
    Neil Carter
    Cozy Powell

This album is produced by Peter Collins and is said to be a lot
more guitar orientated than his last opus 'Wild Frontier'.

Any GARY MOORE fans out there..........?

Gary has just announced his European Tour for '89 with a new album
due for release in January. If recent interviews are anything to
go by, the album should certainly cause this old island of ours
some serious problems in remaining afloat!!

Gary has said that he is dispensing with the "Whang bar histrionics"
that is the trade-mark of so many of todays "Guitar Gods", in favour
of his Gibson Standard with no gimmics.

The touring band consists of :

Gary Moore : Lead Guitar & Vocals
Neil Carter : (Ex-UFO) Rythmn Guitars,Keyboards and Backing Vocals
Bob Daisley : (Ex-Ozzy Osbourne,Uriah Heep) Bass Guitar
    Cozy Powell : (Ex-Rainbow,Whitesnake,.......) Drums

I also read somewhere that Andrew Eldridge of "Sisters Of Mercy"
was supposed to be contributing vocals to the album........
    can anyone confirm/deny this??

Also, Gary makes it clear that he just doesn't know why Stateside
, he can't "crack it". Do any of you guys/gals over there have any
    input ?

Anybody else heard Gazza's new album - "After the War" ??

I've had it now for a couple of days and we are talking 'bout some
    serious CCCCcrunch an' RRRRollll!!!

3 tracks typify the overall content.....

"Led Clones" just has to be the most tongue-in-cheek song of the
year so far. (No prizes for guessing the recipients). The "Big O
" guests on Lead Vocals and as usual comes up with some "original
lines??!" aka..."Saw them on the Radio, Heard their crumby videos"
The song of course boasts a crunchin' guitar riff (a la Page) and
the psychadelic string section was actually recorded in the Abbey
Road studios where the Beatles first spawned the sound.
    Altogether it's a belter!!

"Blood of Emeralds" - Lizzy fans take note - this is for you!!
This song has all the hallmarks that made Lizzy ONE OF THE ALL
TIME HARD ROCK outfits...the huge Celtic riff..intense electric
melody and a chorus so infectious, I was rechin' for some serious
    medication!!

Lastly "Speak For Yourself"....does just that !!!!!!!!!!
If you check out the stratosphere on you way home tonight and see
something burnin' overhead, that ain't a meteor man, that's my
    "wheels"!!!!....who needs gas?!!

It's kinda strange but the whole of side had me thinking it was
a reproduction of older songs then just when I had worked out which
ones..... the damn song changes. It was very confusing but wtf.

I must admit to sniggers up the old sleeve when I heard Led Clones.
I am a big Zeppelin fan and it did me the power of good to hear
a musician taking the pi$$ outta Kingdom Cum. The only problem is...
I was overtaking a line of cars about 5 miles south of Inverness

Hey Bonzo- that reads like you've returned to the sanctity of your
"Metal Core" - ie the stuff you fall back on in all kinds of weather!!

Personally, I'm in experimental mode at the moment -

Dream Theater ; Tin Machine ; Vow Wow (esp track Helter Skelter)
    ; Blue Murder (Whitesnake 89) ; Badlands (Jake E Lee's new band)

    - Some good, some bad , some well......trash!!!

Quick quip - whilst in Geneva, I was chatting away to a rather
conservative colleague when the topic of music came around.
He asked what I was into. When I told him he profoundly replied
that he was into that kinda stuff also. Surprised, I asked him
to be more specific. He told me to wait until lunch time as he
had a tape in the car which he said would "Blow me away!!"

    I couldn't wait!!!

Lunch time arrived....out to the car...baited breath......
Extracts the tape...I look down at the title and begin to
    fall backwards....C H I C A G O - 1 9 Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahh..!!!

Hmmmm...I don't know that much about Gary Moore, so I can't answer the
question. however, was that song maybe done by Billy Thorpe, and not by Gary
Moore? I think Thorpe had a song with a similar title, and I don't know if it
is the same song you're talking about.

Like I said, I'm not sure that is right. But you should check it out. BTW, I
think all of Thorpe's albums are long out-of-print, so you'll have to haunt
the used record stores for it.

> By the way, Cat, you do'nt have another nickname, like "Alleycat", do you?

Well, not in notes. I was given this nickname by some of the members of the
conference (its not worth the long explanation...). But its a funny
coincidence, because when I was growing up, my nickname was Alleycat, seeing
as my first name is Alan.

Just rambling....

BTW, the "Alleycat" reference was because Someone I talk to in Mass.

No offense intended! Plz forgive my ways.

188.26Is it an instrumental ?AYOV18::TMCMANUSTue Jul 04 1989 10:1216
I've got most of Gary's solo albums going back to about his G-Force
period ('80) and I must confess, I've never came across this title...

The nearest title to yours I can remember off the top of my head
is something that appeared on Gary's "Live In Japan " album

I'm a major Gary Moore fan, got most of his albums except the
Skid Row and one of the Colluseum II albums and some of the Jet/CBS
cash-in re-releases. Even got a Bootleg live double album from the
Victims of the Future tour recorded at Hammersmith.

Best albums are IMO "Corridoors of Power" and "After the War".
I've got about 14 different versions of "Parisiene Walkways",
one Studio from "Back on the Streets" and the rest live off the
Friday Rock Show or TV or various live vinyl cuts.

At Donnington '84 Gary said he wouldn't do Parisienne Walkways
anymore, but when I saw him at Wembley Arena on the last
tour - when Cozy quit - he still done it. Was anyone else at that
gig when the support band (Victory) never came on and we waited 3
hours for the headliner? Was worth it though.

Check out the various Cozy Powell albums with Gary Moore on -
particularly "The Loner" on "Tilt" which has been re-recorded.
There's a killer live version about too (somewhere)

re .26 The album Live in Japan (Jap import) has the track "Sunset"
by Don Airey/Gary Moore and is the Rhandy Rhoads tribute

Jeez, I don't even remember where I picked it up! It was a long time ago....
I listened to it again about a month ago, and its a cool tune. If you were to
recommend the first album to pick up from Gary, which one would it be? (The
only one I have is "Wild Frontier".)

From a commercial angle Cat, Wild Frontier is probably his most
accessible album. It spawned him a couple of Top 40 hits here in
    the UK.

But, IMO Gary's most innovative guitar album has to be "Corridors of Power".

The lead work is really "out-front" in the mix and the songs are
dynamite...check out "End Of The World" with Jack Bruce guesting
on vocals or Gary's cover of "Wishing Well".

For me , that album goes through the "pain barrier" and sounds like
    he really meant it!!

one album I always go back to......

    Hiya Cat,

Corridors of Power is definately the one to get -
Neil Murray, Ian Paice, Don Airey - you can't go wrong

The latest LP, After the War is good too - it has that excellent
King-dong Come rip-off "Led Clones" with Ozzy on vocals

Budding Axemen might like to have a go at transcribing the intro
to "The End of the World" :-)

I think also that "Corridors of Power" is Gary's best album. It's really the one
to buy (specially on CD).

I like "After the War" pretty much, and I think it has the same power than
"corridors .." BUT I really think that "Led Clones" is the most horrible tune
of the CD. The music is zero, the vocals are poor (Ozzy can do much better) and
I found this kind of attack totally ridiculous. At least Kinkdom Come do it well.

I was really sad to see that both Gary and Ozzy could enter such a stupid game,
I thought they were wise persons.

Another recommended buy is "Run For Cover" which is more
commercial/accessible than previous albums. I had always thought that
Gary's songwriting let him down, but on this album there's some
quite pleasing melodies. His singing has also improved on this one.

Also includes contributions from Phil Lynnot (RIP), Glenn Hughes,
Cozy Powell, Simon Phillips etc. - the credits on Gary Moore albums
seem to read like a Who's Who of British rockers.

Well, it took me a while, but I finally picked up "Corridors of Power".

WOW!!! It blew me away!!!

I can't believe I had never really heard this stuff before - it is already
(after only 2 days!) one of my favorite HM guitar albums. The tunes are good,
Gary's playing is awesome, and even his singing is real good! And I picked up
the CD, which is definitely worth it!!!

And, for all you HM guitarheads, you should check out the guitar sound on this
album - its incredibly powerful, yet still subtle during the quieter passages.
According to the liner notes, Gary is playing a Charvel through Marshalls.
(Geez, does this mean I have to apologize to Coop for all that Charvel bashing?)

Thanx for the recommendation!

There are some original songs and some good old covers as well. Several songs
remains me a lot Jeff Haley ("See the light").

Band members are : Bob Daisley

Brain Downey (drummer in Thin Lizzy)

Also on different tracks you can find guests like :

		   Albert King

If you don't like the blues, don't buy it. There is nothing else than blues on
it. If you do like blues then ..... run for it :-)

has ever put out. For those of you serious collector's out there, I
have a few things that I am looking for. Here goes: Out in the Fields
dbl. 7 inch, a G-Force single with an unreleased B-Side, an album by

Hardin album, and any concert footage other than Emerald Isles, An

Gary's new(ish) vid is from the last (Still Got The Blues ) tour.

Good/immense concert footage (about 95% of vid ) mixed with interviews
with Gary, Albert Collins and Albert King.

The concert features AC and AK jamming on a couple of numbers
and the guitar exchanges are superb. Definately a vid for the
"Rock Blues" enthusiast, as opposed to someone who likes
    some of Gary's previous albums.

    This one's a great "late-nighter" - y'know - a couple of six-packs

Just wondering if anyone out there has tried to learn any of these
NEW Gary Moore tunes, like "Still Got The Blues", "Stop Messin' Around"
    and any of the rest?
If you insist on catagorizing everything you're going to miss out
on lotza good music, and I've been guilty of it myself!
I sat down with this new tape, and have to admit Gary's also got
quite a bit of musical knowledge, he wrote alot of these songs and
arranged the strings and the horns, he's been around, KNOWS what he's
doing, and he's one talented mother.
The more I listen to him play the more respect I've got for the
guy, he's one of the most lyrical guitarist I've heard in years, and if
you're looking for a challenge, try and copy a few of his solos!
Having a Strat sure will help, a good working knowledge about
modu-lation and improvisation, and especially a SOUL!
So far I've figured out the chord changes, the string section, the
Bass lines and 75% of the solo in "Still Got The Blues", and I'm
working on the last part of the Solo which is a mother, it's fast, it's
precise, it's lyrical, the tone quality is excellent and I'm loving
    every minute of it!
If you need any help or even want to offer suggestions let me
    know............

Anybody in here heard anything from Gary's new album "After Hours" ?

I just saw it in the store lunchtime. I caught a feature on him jammin'
with BB King in London's Hard Rock Cafe last week.

The songs didn't sound familiar but obviously they're heavily weighted
into Blues territory. From what I saw, Tom Petty and George Harrison
were a coupla celebs in attendance.

I guess Gary's relative success with SGTB has kept him away from
mainstream rock. IMO I hope he's not lost to the Blues forever.
I don't know if there's room for 2 Gary Moore Blues albums in

Real shame IMO. He was one hell of a rock guitarist. Mind you, his last
*rock* album was a bummer, compared to earlier stuff like Wild
Frontier. He even admitted as much on the SGTB video. He probably feels
that he's through with coming up with anything new in the rock world.
