| With a "pen name" of Mr Scary II, you probably guessed that I'm
a Lynch fan. I'm not a big fan of Don's voice BUT that is 1/4 of
the DOKKEN sound ! Fave cuts include Mr Scary, Alone Again, Heaven
Comes Down, Behind The Wall, Unchain The Night, and more ....

I think Lynch is truely an original guitarists with a great signature
sound and fresh ideas, but I HATE Dokken!
I hope the rumors are true that DOkken is calling it quits after
the MOR tour and their double live lp marks their career end as
Dokken (as we know it).
I even heard Lynch and Don are battling it out in court on the right
for Lynch to keep the name Dokken for his new band, even though
Don D himself won't be a part of it.
I say "Yey!"
Lynch needs to find himself a REAL band. I have seen Dokken several
times and always felt that they never came off as a cohesive act...
they all seemed in thier own worlds/ego trips. Also, I never thought
they were very professional (Don had a lot to do with this, a poor
frontman from the word go) and never had any doubt in my mind as
to why they were not headliners after 4 albums. Pilson is the only
other Dokken member I'd consider `worth saving'.
as always, MO people.

| I love Dokken! Lynch is a great player, although with "Back for
the Attack" his licks seem to be getting a little repetative. I
still like 'em though. I don't mind DDs voice, seems pretty good
for what they do.
I saw them back in '84 or '85 opening for Triumph. Great show!
I was just sorry we missed the first 1/2 of Dokkens show. Still
made if for Lynchs solo though, there ARE priorities in life...
My first one was "Breaking the Chains" and I've been a fan ever
since.

| Don Dokken has one of the best voices in Metal. I think people who disagree
are probably into thrash/speed/trash and can't appreciate hearing/understanding
the lyrics. He's dynamic, got a good range and can hold a tune. If George
goes off to another band, I'll give Don a call and get him in 2EZ ! ;^)
I REALLY like Lynch Pilson and Brown too. Lynch is one of my fav axe men.
BUT, if he thinks he'd be anywhere without Don, he's outta his mind...
Sorry.

Did you ever hear the Stars song by Hear n Aid?? i thought Don was
one of the weakest, if not the weakest voice on the cut. Maybe
it was just the session though, cuz i though tate and some of the
guits didn't sound that great either.

Just to put myself right, the video UNchain The night has seven
tracks not six ( shows the last time i watched it).
The tracks are :
Into The Fire
Just Got Lucky
Breaking The Chains
Alone Again
The Hunter
It's Not Love
?????? - Can anyone refresh my blank
memory as to the seventh
track before i go home and
look it up. I know it's off
Under Lock And Key.!
I must admit thinking back to DOKKEN's performance Don didn't
do much on stage but then they were new to me and i have to say
that the music was so appealing that i didn't take a lot of notice
about stage presence. I think they supported Twisted Sister or Accept
but i cannot remember without looking at the ticket ( Twisted Sister
probably).

a great voice, and is good too.
I saw Dokken warm up for Lover Boy (Agagagagagagaaaaaa) at Great Woods a
couple of years back. I thought they came off pretty good, but I was
enthralled by George at the time.
George is a wild man on stage...Spends lots of time with his foot up on

adequate. George is the driving force behind the band, all the

As far as Dokken live goes, I have seen them three times. First

at the Centrum, I thought they were great! Third at MOR, I thought
they sucked.
But as far as the albums go, the firs two are killer! I think it
goes downhill from there, but the later ones are still OK, just
not breaking new ground.

I used to like Dokken but on the new album did ya ever notice that
all the lyrics are about women. Now dont get me wrong I love ballads
too but a whole album can get sickening(except Mr Sc.).
As far as writing goes Dokken as a whole is weak. I dont know who
does the writing(Don I think) but whoever it is has a one(very narrow)
track mind. I think Don has an ego big enough to fill Sullivan
Stad.
George is a GREAT git player but his stuff is getting
redundant(although its still mind numbbing when he kicks in the
speed). He needs a new band.
Jeff..well what can you say about him. More of a poser than a bassist.
He jumps around so much that he rarely plays a note.
Mick isnt a great drummer but he is the solid foundation every band
needs. And he has a great sense of humor.
I saw them at the MOR in Foxboro and they stunk. What really was
a p*sser is that for Georges whole solo was for the camera and not
the fans. He sat there and did nothing but pose. And his solo
was severly lacking.....I dont know, but I do know I wasnt impressed.

re .26 Whitesnake does have a lot of love songs but the lyrics
arent as mushy and not all of thier songs are about love, some are
about good ole fashion SEX. You think Bad Boys(to name one) is

6. Kiss of Death 6. In My Dreams
7. When Heaven Comes Down 7. Turn on the Action
8. Into the Fire 8. Walk Away (studio)
9. Mr. Scary
Well, I got a copy of the new Dokken cassette yesterday (sometimes its
nice to know the bands!), and checked it out last night. Overall, I was
disappointed but not suprised. Basically, this is a greatest hits album.
All the songs are pretty much the same as the album versions, without
much variation at all. I was suprised at the recording quality - for a
live album, it sounds real good (unlike what the band sounds like live).
But its not very adventurous at all....
Favorites - "Just Got Lucky" has a ripping guitar solo from George,
nice and short but well done. Also, "Breaking the Chains"
kicks some butt, as do some other songs.
Most Disappointing - "Mr. Scary" (with apologies to Mr. Scary II!). I guess
I keep expecting more from Lynch. This is god, but I
always thought he was better than his solos showed.
Maybe not.
Also - confirmed that the band is breaking up, and Lynch Mob is being
formed with Pillson singing.

I rather expected a 'greatest hits' live album. Actually, Alan, when I
saw them at MOR in Denver, they *sounded* quite good, but it was like
they were all playing in different rooms.
I would imagine that "Mr. Scary" will never sound right live. The
original has about a million overdubs, fade ins and outs. I can't even
imagine *anyone* playing it exactly in a live situation (without at
least two, maybe three guitar players...).

Well, yeah, I did like it.....I just wish they had taken advantage of
the situation (knowing that it would be their last album) and done
some experimenting, or had some fun, or something! But thit does make
a nice package, where I can have all their best songs on one tape.
BTW, "In My Dreams" sounds real good on the tape. I wonder how much
overdubbing they did in the studio on this album?
"Walk Away" will be the single off the album. It is the obligatory
studio song, and is a "power ballad" in the same vein as "Alone Again".

| Well, I finally bought Beast from the East.
I've never owned a Dokken album previously, so I can't say whether
they've gone down hill or not, but after about 250 listens,
I LIKE THIS ALBUM.
The band sounds real tight on the album, Dokken's voice sounds
fine to me, and Lynch kicks ass on guitar.
Fave tunes - Tooth and Nail, Into the Fire, Just got Lucky.
All in all a very good album I think. I gather this is a "greatest
hits" song selection, so I doubt I'll be buying another DOkken
album.
A couple other things though... I'm not as impressed as I thought
I'd be with Lynch, and Mr. Scary live is good, but is basically
(to me) just "another guitar solo" that could probably be pulled
off by a LOT of guitarists out there. I'll have to check out the
studio version I guess.
Wasn't Don Dokken the lead guitarist for this band before anyway?
I heard he's not too bad himself.

| Wow... Bummer...
I hate to say it cuz I think Lynch is great, but he's no-place without
Don... (IMHO). Like someone else said (Motor?) he's just another
guitar solo (especially lately).
I always got the impression that Don was restraining Lynch (Read:
holding him back) but that is what made Dokken good. Ya can't write
a love song and have Mr. Scary shredding it with riffffssssss...
I think Dokkens last studio effort was too much Mr. Scary, and not
enough of the classic Dokken lines from Under Lock And Key and Tooth
And Nail. It's kinda like Scary said "I quit unless ya gimme an
album I can shred on !

I read somewhere that Don Dokken has been auditioning several
guitarists for his new band which is just "supposedly" going to
be called "Don Dokken" so as not to confuse with Dokken efforts.
When I read this article it said that he is seriously considering
ex-Europe guitarist John Norum. That sounds great to me. Imagine
Don's throat accompanied by Norum! I know a lot of people think
that "Final Countdown" was Europe's first LP, but au contraire,
it was "Wings of Tomorrow" (actually it was the second but the first
is only available in Sweden). I also know there's been a conflict
over Europe even being HM, but "Wings of Tomorrow" should definitely
be considered as HM. As for their most recent albums it's kind
of iffy. "Wings of Tomorrow" is rokken without all the synthesizers
that are on the two most recent albums.

I read an article in an old metal hammer that DD and John Norum

Norum is a great guit player but he can't write for toffee (Just

George was basically saying that Don liked to rule the band, and often
his ideas he forced on everyone just wasn't `him', and he often felt
like he was putting on an act. George also said that several of Don's
"bright ideas" actually hurt Dokken's career in the long run. An
example Lynch cited was on Under Lock and Key, Don Dokken contracted a
designer to make `glam' outfits for everyone for the cover photos.
George said it cost them a $1000. a piece for the outfits, and from
then on the band was pegged as a `poseur' band by metal fans. Being
stereotyped along with bands like Motley and Poison wasn't comfortable
with Lynch and wasn't a mold he wanted to work in.
In retrospect to that, I don't think its a case of Don D. holding Lynch
back for the better, unless of course you think that Don's sappy pop
music is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

That's not the one Joes referring to. There's a picture of Lynch in
that interview with him holding some old beater acoustic(?). It's a
real ugly white color and all beat up. I don't know what it is, but to
me it looks like an El Cheapo.
re: Motorbreath
Funny that your fav songs on that live one were all from the album
"Tooth and Nail" which is my fav of the Dokken albums. That would be
the first studio effort of theirs I'd recommend checkin out. Back for
the Attack (the one with Mr. Scary) was kind of disappointing for me.
While still a good album, I didn't like it nearly as much as any of the
other albums.

I ALWAYS thought his lyrics were bubble gum. Sugery tooth rot designed
to appeal to pubecent teenie-boppers. Lynchs guitar work held the

OK metal dudes. While Slash is obviously not the best HM guit around,
he has done one thing successfully in his career...which is turned
the SOUND of rock guitar around and make it come back full circle.
I mean, here we were in the late 80s, with guitarists like Lukather,
Vai, Campbell, Lynch...playing through guitar rig set-ups that cost
more than most people houses!!!! And the whole classically-influenced
Malmsteen/MacAlpine/Andre Fath/Gilbert/Vai/Cacophony speed guitar
thing......
Slash came out and made the Les_Paul_plugged_straight_into_a_Marshall_
Stack sound infamous again. We had lost sight of this to modified
strat thingies and high tech amp setups. Also, people weren't playing
rock blues anymore. So, for those fans of the 70s sound and approach,
cheers to Slash for making everyone remember a strong period of
rock guitar prominant in the late 80s!

Excellent point. Not quite "straight" into the Marshall, he's brought
the Wah-Wah back into style.
"Best" is an ambiguous word anyway, one persons best may differ from
another. In this case, perhaps to Kerrang (is that spelled right?)
"best" was "sold lots of records" or "made lots of people happy" rather
than "has amazing speed and dexterity".
Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't vote him as my best (in a long run), but
he plays catchy memorable licks and that gets him at least an
honourable mention in my book. You listen to the speed-burners and one
lightening fast lick blurrs into the next. While it takes incredible
skill to play stuff like this...do you find yourself humming it later?
Probably not, that's what the non-musician public remembers. They
don't care in the least whether it took 20 years of practice and
outstanding aptitude to be able to do it or not.
I know that when I play some incredibly complex stuff that just knocks
my socks off, as a person that plays (at least tries) an instrument,
for some of my friends and they just go "oh yeah that's nice...put on
some <insert less skillful band of your choice>".

| I was wondering what people thought about the untimely demise of
Dokken. They were truly one of the best metal bands out. They are
certainly better than most of the crap that is out today. My question
is why, in your opinions, did this happen? They were so good and
talented, and had so much cool stuff out, why didn't they hit it big?
Alone Again had to be the best ballad by any metal band, or at least in
the top 5. The "Walk Away" tune on Beast... was really good, and
certainly, IMO, should have killed the charts. Back for the Attack was
a really cool album...but again it just didn't cut it, and they never
made it to headline in the US.
What are your reasons for this misfortune to metal?
However, Don was just holding George back, but now with Lynch Mob, he
is going to kick a*s! I'm really looking forward to the new album.

I wonder what it will be like in Lynch Mob ?
I gotta agree with you though. Dokken will be missed as a band.

This month's Metrenome in the "Metronome Madness" column it says
"Congratulations to Darren Householder local guitarist who has just
landed a gig with Jeff Pilson of Dokken".
So it looks definite that Jeff is either out of the line up or that
George is gone and Darren is in? Hmmmmmmm, which do you think it

I love Don's nasal voice, Lynch's somewhat unorthodoxed approach

I believe Don Dokken has TWO guitarists in his new band.
John Norum, former Europe, and the former guitarist for
Watchtower. If you've ever heard any of Watchtower's
stuff, you'd know that he doesn't sound like Lynch. I've
also heard Norum's early Europe stuff (not as pop-oriented
as later Europe), and he doesn't sound like Lynch either.
I've heard Mirror, Mirror only twice, but I can't see where
the Lynch-clone views are coming from. The song structure
itself definately has 'Don Dokken' written all over it, though.
The song wasn't too bad, but I expected more.

| Being a big Dokken fan, I picked up the new one by "Don" today
(WTF, right ?). I like it better than their last two efforts...
But not as much as Under Lock And Key and Tooth And Nail...
My two faves.
I can see where the Lynch/Norum similarities are...But I think
it's no big deal. Hell, *I'd* like to sound like Lynch...
Why shoudn't Norum ? As a side note, I don't *feel* all the
tension in this effort, but I do feel a Don attitude saying
"Hey WTF happened to Lynch Mob? <smirk>".
I feel this album will do well in the pop-metal market.
Dons always been able to sing (least I think he can), and
lets face facts; he's been saround and knows what sells !

| OK, I listened to the new Don Dokken CD this weekend, and I gotta tell
ya - I liked it a LOT !
1> Does Don's voice still sound whinny ? Yes ...
2> Does every song have a pretty predictable melody line ? Yes ...
3> Does the guitar player sound like George Lynch ? Yes ...
4> So basically, it sounds a lot like old Dokken, right ? Yes !
Don't get me wrong, I couldn't listen to this stuff for hours at a
time, but it's light-hearted metal with rememberable chorus lines.
And the guitar player sounds a LOT like Mr. Scary ... which isn't too
shabby. I've been told *I* sound a lot like someone, but to this date
I haven't figured out who this "sh*t" guy plays for ... but he must be
popular ... 8^)

| Caught Don Dokken's new act last night! Great guitar work and
plenty of it. I think I know which one was John Norum due to the
aforementioned Lynch similarity. Who the hell is from Accept? The
other guitar player? He wasn't quite as good as Norum (but neither
am I! B-} .) The drummer is from King Diamond, SOLID!
This was a Sunday night show at a local club, $14 a pop and the
place was packed to the rafters. Lotsa musicians, woman in revealing
lace, hair extensions... etc.
The show consisted of plenty of old Dokken tunes. "The Hunter",
"Into the Fire", "Breaking the Chains", "It's not Love", and the
opener was "Paris is Burning". Interesting that Don gave the band
a break while playing "Alone Again" on acoustic. Nice job! It seems
his voice has improved considerably. I remember seeing Dokken as
an opener and thought the vocals s*cked! Not this time around.
The two guitarists did a great job of covering the Lynch licks!
A lot of the new tunes features the dual guitars, sorta reminded
me of seeing Night Ranger when they sent from switching leads into
harmonized leads.
If you get a chance to catch this act in a club, I would recommend
it. Don didn't come off as the "Ego" that Lynch makes him out to
be, but then again D.D. isn't playing the big arenas this go around.

| Thanx Buck -
Can somebody out there post the whole line-up?
Where's the other guitar player from? I should've
mentioned that they threw a quick two chorus lines of
"Balls to the Wall" in the middle of "It's not Love". Don
made some reference to somebody being from Accept.
FWIW - I thought "Mirror,Mirror" was far from the best
of the new Dokken material. One song in particular (don't
know the name) started out real thrashy, unusual for Don's
previous material.

| We went to the show last night. I can't honestly give a musical
review. We were sittting (I should say standing for 4 1/2 hrs)
on the edge of the stage. Dangerous place. We were in front of the
mains, so everything began to sound a little muddy.
Other than being "beat up" the show was great. Some drunk dude
spilled beer on us all night, and was being the typical drunk
dude with an attitude. I turned around to tell him to quit and
he started a brawl with Jeff. I got punched twice in the face
by some guy (nice eh?) I'm getting WAY to OLD for that game!
They did all the classic tunes, "Breaking the Chains, Unchain the
Night, Tooth & Nail, In my Dreams, Kiss of Death, Into the Fire,
It's not Love, Alone Again.."
Their newer stuff seems alot heavier, nothing like the old Dokken.
Could be that my ears were fried. I haven't heard much of their
new stuff on the radio.
Don & George- Same ol same ol. I've never seen a live show with one
of the "bigger acts" where the guitar player constantly stopped
between songs to "tune." Don was giving him a "hard time"
and George didn't say two words to him all night. The doors were
supposed to be open at 7:00, but they didn't let us in until 7:30
because George was taking a fit for some reason. I wouldn't be
surprised if they didn't make it through the whole tour, this was
their opening gig for the tour and Don and George looked like
they *HATED* each other.
The guys are getting old. Don looked like death. He has a "full" head
of "hair weaved" hair. George, looks like a construction worker, if he
would of been standing next to me in line, I would've never known it
was him. Jeff looks like he has been on tour for years already, and
Mick was hot, but also looked very tired.
I need a nap. :-)

Ahh, the scent of hair spray in the air...
Dokken was kickin' the other night, but every time George got hot on
his guitar Don would either leave the stage or give George the "Icy
Dokken Glare". It was sorta funny...
I enjoyed the show, but think (as the spousal unit mentioned), I'm too
old for rock shows now a daze.
Don definately looked like he'd doin' crossroads to stay awake. He
looked like shit-warmed-over. Georgo on the otherhand, while looking
older had definately been working out and looked healthy, anyway.
His guitar playing was excellent.
Pilson hadn't changed a bit. Still the posin' wild-boy. George and
Don didn't even break a sweat, but Pilson was SOAKED.
Mick Brown looks like Rod Stewart.
Definate crowd pleasers were the OLD Dokken tunes from Tooth-n-Nail,
Unchain The Night, and Mister-Scary (well, I liked that anyway).
Stuff like Alone Again and It's Not Love were re-arranged to add a
little life - Something that Don DEFINATELY didn't like...You could
tell. I liked it. :-)
All in all, a good show. I hope I didn't bust that chicks nose when
I punched her face... ;-)
RE: Back a few
I should say that *I* thought Dokken beat up LoverBoy at GreatWoods
way back, but I didn't say that overBoy was bad...in fact, I liked
LoverBoy - Thats why I went to the show...I'd barely heard of Dokken

I heard a new Dokken tune on 'AAF the other day. Can't
remember the name but I do remember not liking it that much.
Anybody pick up the new CD? Is it out?

| I don't have it but have heard it. I'm not a Dokken fan, but
track 4 on the CD, kicks major ass, and I'm sure the CD could grow
on me.

Got the new Dokken CD, "Dysfunctional", listened once, listened
twice, AND: not bad. First, vocals: Man, I am hearing some
King's X-styled vocal harmonies ALL OVER this CD!! Still, sounds
all right. Guitars: George Lynch rockin' tone is happening!!
Solos are a *bit* hidden (...little Don-Don cryin' again?). Too
bad a couple of songs open with a riff extremely similar to "Mr.
Scary" - EXTREMELY similar. No instrumental(s) this time = no
big suprise here. They do an O.K. cover of "From The Beginning"
at the end of the CD (IMO, they should have left this one alone
and chose something else).
I still think the first single is a tad on the lame side. There
are some cool tunes on this one. It could have been worse.

I like "In the Beginning" ... not the greatest song to begin with,
but they did a good job on it.
George gets to rip here and there, but not much.
So far I like "What Price" and track 6, which I've forgotten the
name of for the 5th time today [and the day is still young]. I
keep forgetting the 1st word, but the last 1 is "life".

I taped the first nine songs the other day which are :-
Inside Looking Out, Hole In My Head, The Maze, Too High To Fly,
Nothing Left To Say, Shadows Of Life, Long Way Home,
Sweet Chains, Lesser Of Two Evils....
I'm not too sure about the style of the songs yet but I did
give it a few spins and it was ok, "Too High To Fly" was good.
Tooth And Nail will always be my fav'
Giles.

"Shadowlife"
I gave it a couple spins today. Not bad, but no "Tooth and Nail". They're a long
way away from that album now.
Some Tool/King's X overtones, and even a bit of Monster Magnet on song #5.

| Hey Slab,
I think I heard a track from Dokken the other night and I liked it.
The only problem is, I don't know the name of the album, song or even
if it was "dokken". This most recent album, is it re-mixed sorta???
I heard the guy on the radio mentioning something like that. I figure
if ya mention off some of the names on that album it'll solve my
question.
If ya have the time that is, thanks in advance,
J

Yes, we know that George Lynch has a recording contract and you
don't.
But it's no reason to be THAT bitter.

That's ok -- at least I didn't have to sit in classes at music college
and be confused when the teacher asked me to play a d minor 7 arpeggio.

RE: .259
If he knew EVERYTHING, what would be the point in going to music
class?
Heck, I have a hard time cutting and pasting "d minor 7 arpeggio",
never mind actually playing it.
