| Well, I'm not sure these bands belong in the same note together.
While they are both new bands, etc. their styles are very different.
For example, I don't really like Cinderella, but I think Tesla put
out one of the best albums of last year.
Maybe this is just nitpicking. I don't know....

145.2 | It gets sickening! | PLEXUS::V5REGISTRAR | | Wed Jul 13 1988 11:21 | 24 |
| I just love Tesla!
I used to really like Cinderella right after Night Songs came out,
but I think I (and MTV!!) burned myself out. I liked the song
Night Songs the best. I have the cassette in my car, but I can't
even stomach it anymore. I saw the new video, noticed their new
image, but I don't think I can handle any more Cinderella right
now. I got that same feeling I got when I heard Bruce Springsteen
was releasing a new album. Sort of like dread of things to come--
airwaves pollution. I feel the same way when U2 or INXS decide
to release yet another single off their albums. It's like "better
get to like this crap, I'm going to have to hear it a million more
times.
Sorry, I got off topic there...
Anyway, I never get sick of Tesla. So many "big name" people name
Tesla as what "they listen to at home in the car." You know how
interviewers never fail to ask "So what is it you like to listen
to?" I have heard them say Tesla so many times, it makes me wonder
why they didn't skyrocket right off.

I find that by Tesla NOT skyrocketing, they've managed to
keep their music popular, yet somewhat unknown.
This enables people to never get sick of listening to them,
unlike Springsteen, INXS and the other bands who seem to have
an endless album!
Wish I had gone to see them on New Year's Eve when they opened
for Def Leppard.....kick myself now, that's for sure!!!

I did that same thing Stac (Anastacia) sis...I burned out Night
Songs. I thought it was good when it came out, but its unlistenable
now. I really don't even like their new effort on the other hand.
Now Tesla, I think Tesla is one of THE best bands to emerge in quite
a while. They have a unique sound and approach to songwriting.
Everyone I talk with (with the exception of the Cookster [I expected
as much]) loves Tesla. Ever notice the reaction those who wear
Tesla T-shirts to concerts get?? I think they will blossom into
a great band, although since they are kind of eccentric musically,
I suspect they might be a cult thing, similar to Queensryche.

and a heavy guitar sound. I'd love to see them live.
Stacie mentioned popular musicians liking them...
if you watch Metallica's video "Cliff 'em All" (which I highly
recommend), there's a piece where there sitting around partying

in the background.

| OK, being a Tesla junkie, I gotta throw my .02 in as well. I heard
'em first on the banger's ball doing "Modern Day Cowboy", and I
liked the acoustic/electric mix. I also like the fact that they
have 2 completely different styles of guitarist - unlike say Priest
and Maiden who (IMO) have twins for stringsmiths (i.e. butter,
parkay, no difference ...). And I also like the fact that they
are a self-proffesed t-shirt and jeans kind of band, like Metallica
in that respect - no spandex and mousse abuse (you hear me Coop?).
I could go on but, when Coop replies to this note, you'll probably
wear the letters off your return key getting through it .....

Hey prc,
While I respect you to have your own opinion of the band, I can
only say that you, being a musician, should be one of the first
ones to notice that Tesla is made up of some pretty unique musicians.
Have you heard the whole album?? I guess you could summize that
opinion just by hearing a few of the hits.
I mean, how many rock bands incorporate organ, mandolin, acoustic
piano, bass pedals, acoustic guitars, and guitar driven leslie speakers
all in one sound? I think its pretty unique. They def. have roots
in the 1970's.

12" from the album, and I've been trying to get a copy ever since,

very rare and hard to get, but they do exist (I saw one).

It's not anything about them that makes me say 'wow' it's just that
they really seem to have it together, and have what it takes for
good, honest, no-lip-gloss rock.
It's hot and heavy stuff. Very straightforward. Real rock and

Well, IMHO, Tesla is very straight forward like Dilly said. No
frills. The guitarists aren't gonan blow your mind with intense
talent. The thing that attracts me as a guitarist to Tesla is the
tastefulness of all the riffs. Also, while Tommy and Frank aren't
the BEST guitarists in metal, they are one of the best "Team Players"
in the business. They complement each other very well.
Brians vox, while not clean and whispy (by any means) fit right
in with the music. They are strong and heart felt.
And last but not least, the music they write is not "bubble gum"
but is commercial enough to get them plenty of airplay. It's also
a great mix or metal and r&b (which I like).
jc (who could possibly be Tesla's biggest fan)
PS - You should see them in cencert. They didn't miss a note.

Glad to hear you had a great time!
I went to the show at the Channel last night too and I wasn't impressed
at all, but I didn't stick around for the whole thing....I got very
bored. The doors were suppossed to open at 8, the opening band
(??Beggars and Thieves??) started playing at 9:45 and were good. Tesla
didn't come on until 11pm. I was right up front and the crowd was
unbelievable. Some girl caught a stool in the face while people were
passing them around the club during intermission. Not one person moved
to help her, or the people with her for fear of losing their places!!
There was minimal air conditioning and people were getting very nasty
(pushing and shoving)!! Then when Jeff sat down you couldn't even see
him so I left. I have the "Great Radio Controversy" at home, and love
it, and if I just want to listen (and not watch, get beat up or deal
with ignorant people) I can.
I'd go see Tesla again if they were playing at the Centrum, but never
again will I see a show at the Channel. This was my first there, and
I'm sorry to say, I was very disappointed.

"The Great Radio Controversy" is in the walkman as I type. I don't
think I'd dish out as much praise as the readers did in the first 138
replies, but they do have a unique tandem going. The dueling guitar
team reminds me a little of Def Leppard's guitar duo. They do work
well together!
As an audiophile, I think the history of Nikola Tesla, his experiments,
and the groups adoption of the name is more interesting ;-) Tesla (the
man) was into some wierd stuff! The band must be fairly knowledgable
to carry on the man's name.

I think, even the guitarists admitted it in a guitar mag somewhere,
that the production/excution was better on the second album, but
the song writing was better on the first.

Did I say I hated sixties musicians? I don't think so.
The sixties: too many drugs, Vietnam, long greasy hair, idiotic
fashion, disillusionment, yuppy youth, Woodstock, the Beatles
people pretending to care about changing the world's problems
only because it was the current 'thing', then going on to
becoming the exact people they supposedly hated.
Those are some of the things I hate about the sixties.

Bad news is that it's got their version of that BOGUS "Signs" song on

Just because I can't (of haven't) done something has nothing to do with

Why is it that *my* material suddenly has to be judged in comparison to

I recently bought this on C.D. and to tell you the truth was a little
disappointed in the effort on the first listen. Reminds me of the
second album Great Radio Contrversy (sp?). Anyways, my main complaint
is that they still don't seem to be able to decide which way there going
with there music. I also found the Lyrics kind of lame on some of the
songs.
Maybe it will grow on me after awhile like the second one but, its
certainly not in Mechanical Resonance catergory, which I loved after one
listen and still rates as one of my favorite albums.

| Tesla---Psychotic Supper
(It's got to be the best new Rock 'n Roll album of the year!)
Change In The Weather (I think this song represents the change of
style from their last album...It's a LOT
deeper; real soulful stuff.)
Edison's Medicine (Of course this is what's selling the album. Even
though it's a good tune, it's not the best
on the LP. Don't De-Rock Me or Change In
The Weather are better IMO.)
Don't De-Rock Me (Speaks for itself I suppose, it's really rebellious
and anti-establishment type song...)
Call It What You Want (You MUST hear this.)
Song & Emotion (Dedicated to Steve "Steamin'" Clark of Def Leppard;
this ballad is EVEN cooler than "What You
Give".)
Time
Government Personnel (it's only 58 seconds long, so it's
probably not even a song...)
Freedom Slaves (Very rockin' tune)
Had Enough
What You Give (ballad Mania!)
Stir It Up
Can't Stop
Toke About It (Wonder what this song is about...DUH!)
Overall, this album smokes their first one. If you don't like this
album you have serious psychological problems!

| Gotta agree with April - this album *smokes*!!!
Just got it the other day, I've only heard half of it so far. But everything
I've heard so far RULES! "Change In The Weather" has a great funky, rockin'
beat (sorta reminds me a touch of Ratt), "Edison's Medicine" rocks bigtime,
and "Don't De-Rock Me", while being a little stupid, featuring some WAILING
guitar work from both the boys, as they trade licks back and forth!!! (I
don't know which is which, but whoever is the one who goes first, in the
left channel, does some amazing playing!)
Check it out - if the rest is as good as the first few songs, this could
match their first album for being their best!!!

Buck, all I can tell you is what I think....
Tesla MR is one of the greatest albums of all times (agreed!!!)
Tesla GRC is good album, just not up to MR (If it was by another
group everyone would love it, it is just that people
expected a bit more from Tesla) The ballads they released
from the album turned a lot of people off. If you look back
through this note, people (initially) loved GRC, but as it
got more airplay, it went down in peoples opinions.
Tesla 5MAJ not as bad as people say. I liked quite a few of the
songs re-done accoustically. People have to give this one
a chance. A lot of people made up their minds about this
one just beacuse of signs..
Tesla PS ROCKS!!!! The songs are very good, and very strong on
this album. Each has a meaning that has to be read into.
The trading of guitar solos between Frank and Tommy is
great. I love this as much as MR... Both are in the same
class. Of course the songs are a bit different.. I am sure
a lot of people wanted a MR II. But the band has grown, yet
they have not lost their pure R&R sound...
Buck all I can say is pick up PS it is well worth the $$$$....
For you others.... break out PS again, and give it a chance
without think 'Hmmmm now how does this compare to MR'
I think you will like it... Be open-minded...
JMO!!!

I *said* it was interesting and original AT FIRST! Problem with
original ideas is that they lose their novelty the longer you drag them
out. I think that three albums and numerous references in the songs on

Tesla was kicking--- A lot from the new album.. Mostly the hard rocking

ended the night with a steve miller tune a peter frampton tune and
"getting better" (my Favorite)...
Very basic stage setup- nothing elaborate... Just good ole fashined
R&R...

Okay. I've seen the video for the "It Aint What You Got, etc." song
twice now and I have come to this conclusion: HAIR.
Its like this, the hair falls in the face, it gets pushed back, then
purposely thown into face again, then flipped around, then manic
head-hair flips, then the Newsted-roll-around-flip, etc. There were
times when the guitarist dude looked like a dying fish cause he was
flopping his head around so much.
I think the song is really nice though.

| O.K. I went to see Firhouse and Tesla last Saturday at Red Rocks.
It was better than I expected but also let me down in many ways...
Firehouse came on just about the time it started to rain and anyone who
has ever been to Red Rocks knows this ALWAYS happens. They should call
it Rain Rocks!!
Firehouse came on with a blazing set of old and new material.
Everything was ON and the set was energetic!!! Even though the new
album is kind of disappointing the live show wasn't!
It was great how all of Firehouse's stage set-up had wheels! The time
inbetween was maybe half an hour. Thumbs up to that!
Telsa started off with "Come At Ya live" or should I say a guitar solo.
Most people were still sitting down because they just thought the
roadies were still messing around. They ran through EVERRTHING and
played for about 2 hours. They couldv'e played more but this band has
been taken over by the EGO MANIC guitarist Frank Hannon. He played
about 7 different solos by himself during the course of the show.
IT WAS LIKE WELCOME TO THE FRANK HANNON SHOW....HERE'S FRANKIE!!!!
YUCK...I kept laughing because just when I thought he was done he'd
be up there again. They did the acustic thing. Jeff Keith was wasted
and kept sluring his words which made me wish he'd stop talking to the
crowd and just try to sing. Speaking of singing..ACK! He sounded like
a frog on acid being eaten by a baby aligator or something.
The bass player Braqin Wheat was about as interesting as Rice Krispies
in the morning: You knew he was there by the sound but ya really didn't
care. He was uninspired and even SAT on the drum riser a few times.
The drummer? Well...I couldn't even see the drummer from the way the
lights were set up andd al the smoke coming from the stage.
The set list wasn't very well paced either...Up...DOWN...Up...Down.
The lights, the smoke and the way Frank Hannon tryed to act as much
Jimmy Page as is humanly possible made me wish I was stoned. Maybe then
I wouldn't enjoyed their concert.

abandonned it. It starts quite fine and heavy but later it joins the
style of their previous album. There are 2 or 3 really strong songs (to
