Not being into thrash or speed metal, I can say I'm an
expert on it, but I agree with Pete about the indifference.
There are a rather large array of "divisions" in metal.
Most groups now claim to be Metal, but are actually
gussied up pop bands out to give the public what they want.
"the public" being the tape buying teenagers mostly, of
course!
The band gets their money and the public gets the tunes.
....back to the topic at hand,
I don't find there is much of a difference between speed
and thrash metal...

There really is no true distinction (at least, not
one that applies to bands instead of songs). It's
another marketing scheme (like back-masking) to get
the gum-chewing youths to buy more albums.
Thrash has usually meant a more *punk* message
in the lyrics, being played fast (and not terribly
accurately, unless they mean to strike all those
dischordant chords).
Speed is simply metal that moves faster than
the speed of sound. By the time you hear a note
the artists have already played four more... you are
always behind the band.

comes an opinion and I don't know if we can still voice them or
not ..) thrash = noise. These bands may have talent but it's the
same talent you would need to perform a hemmeroid (-5pts 4 spelling)

Before this gets too biased, I'd like to say that I like THRASH,
and I'm probably the only guy on this conference who does.
Speed Metal is great, bands like Helloween, Metal Church, Crimson
Glory. Generally bands in this category look like other bands but
play at the speed of light (most of the time anyway).
Thrash is the combination of many influences from punk, hardcore,
'normal' metal, and speed metal. There are two distinct divisions
in thrash - Hardcore and Thrash. The hardcore element comes mainly
from the punk and the songs are either political or fun/nonsense.
Also usually so fast you can't slam hard enough. Thrash metal is
definately different to hradcore, the songs are either about sex,
money, Satan, science fiction, history, legend, infact almost anything
except politics. I tend towards the originators of the genre as
I feel most of the newer groups are just jumping on the bandwagon
with record companies signing any old shit that call themselves
thrash.
The best include Nuclear Assault, Slayer, Possessed (RIP), Sodom,
Voivod, Dark Angel, Anthrax, Metallica, Megadeth, Onslaught, Tankard
to name but a few.
You have heard the voice of the Duck,

like London and Odin fit in the scheme of things???
I watched a bit of "The Decline of Western Civilization -- The Metal
Years" on EmptyV last night and they showed some cuts from the movie
(e.g. Megadeth and the above-mentioned bands). Anyway, London and
Odin sounded like thrash, but was it hardcore or what?

This a band among my favs. They have an edge over a lot of
other bands because they can PLAY and PLAY WELL!! Lyrically the
band is becoming a bit stale with constant songs about nuclear war
and the holocaust but I believe they'll overcome this and Survive
when most of thrash dies and the fashion goes elsewhere.

Ok, that's a bit better, maybe others would like to chip in
as well.
There's a new band just released their debut on vinyl,
they are ANACRUSIS and the album's The Suffering Hour. It's well
produced and definitely has been influenced by the likes of Slayer
and Metallica.
A few good British bands are about to break big, at
last, this year. Onslaught will finally release their third album
in the autumn, after signing to a major label (London Records).
Acid Reign, from Nottingham way, had great success with their mini
L.P. earlier this year called Moshkinstein. Sabbat, on Noise, were
mega on their debut History of a Time to Come. Virus finally came
good on their second album, Force Recon. I don't know if it's
completely true, but it seems that the American end of the thrash
world is pretty stale at the moment, there is no new direction
everthing is very samey.
Did you hear about Piggy, of Voivod? Apparently he has cancer
of the throat and may not be able make vocal noises any more.
Hang the Pope,
The Duck.

Death's new L.P. is great. Possibly better than the debut
but different (hence no direct comparison). Real loud pounding
drums, scorching guitars and vocals that just make you want to
crawl into a ball and die.

Well, the best idea is give me your address. I'll make for you
a compilation tape with all differrent bands on it. Probably,
one song per each band. If certain band you like on the tape
just go out and buy one. That way should save lots of your
money I think.

As far as I know, death/black metal is the fastest and brutal music
out there of these days. I don't know what type of music of their
"Mr. Bungle" style? So, I can't really tell that if they are fast
enough? I can judged by their name "Mr. Bungle" probably one of
the heavy metal band, are they?
