Conference napalm::heavy_metal

    How many of you headbangers have heard the new Queensryche,    
    "Operation Mindcrime".In my opinion its the best new metal     
    album out.The album is definitely a conceptual album and       
    could be compared with "The Wall".The album kicks from         
    begining to end and is worth checking out.                     
      Id like to hear other opinions on it.

    I love Geoff Tate's voice anyway, I think the effects in the song
    put the imagination to work, felt like I was watching a movie...I
    think they should put it into film. Or maybe their next album...
    
    Actually it's been out for quite a while now, just don't have the
    right publicity.

    I picked up Mindcrime a couple weeks ago. I'd never heard 
    Queensryche before, but I'd heard nothing but good things about
    the album, so I picked it up. As a matter-of-fact, I'm listening
    to it right now. From what I've been able to pick up from it
    (which isn't too much since I work as I'm listening)... it's
    basically the story of a man who has become disillusioned by 
    American society, politics, and religion, and has decided to do
    something about it.... namely killing certain political and religious
    figures, and he's in a hospital, all drugged up, trying to remember
    why he's there. 
    
    That's what I think, at least.

	The first time I heard this album was at a special sneak-preview album
party at (wouldja believe it?) a night club in Cincinnati - you know, the kind
where they play one 4-hour 'Dance' song an evening! - and I was SO impressed.  I
took a chance on Queensryche's EP when it came out, loved it, and have been
listening as their albums keep getting better;anyone not familiar with this
band and in this Notesfile really should take a listen.
	Anyway, on to my interpretation of the Album - any
agreement/disagreement welcome - hey, this could be fun, checking out
everybody's view on OPERATION:mindcrime...but if you haven't 'experienced' the
album yet, you might want to form your own opinions.
	The album starts with the sounds of a Washington, D.C. hospital - our 
protagonist, Mickey, is found in a drugged state induced by repeated
injections from the hospital staff.  Before the nurse can put him back under
once again, a TV news program can be heard, and this program tells us that many
political and religious leaders around the city have been killed, and a suspect
is under observation at a nearby hospital. As he goes under, the nurse mutters
"Sweet Dreams...you bastard!", and this starts the recollection (or is it all a
hallucination?) of events passed...events which Mickey performed for the
Revolution - Operation:mindcrime.
	Dr. X is a revolutionary, crusading against government control. 
Through rallies and media manipulation (TV, Radio, etc.) his message reaches 
Mickey, who is frustrated with the state of the Nation:The Communist Threat, TV
Evangelists, the media itself(great irony throughout the album!), payoffs - 
but especially the payoffs, the quest for the Almighty Dollar, no matter who 
gets hurt.  Seeing a visionary he can relate to, Mickey gets involved - as a
hitman for the cause, 'signing up' by accepting the needle (strong anti-drug
theme throughout the album).
	Under Dr. X's influence, Mickey now sees himself as a crusader - 
eradicating Fascism in the States any way necessary, all in the name of God 
(Dr. X), all for the improvement of the Condition.
	Enter Mary, a whore spreading the diseases of society both literally
and figuratively . She is converted to the cause by Father William (a top 
operative in the mindcrime organization) becoming Sister Mary and,
coincidentally, Mickey's form of penance, cleansing his sins committed for the
organization.  Mickey lights a candle for every sin he commits,
and soon the church is full of candles...and Mickey finds himself in love with
Mary.
	Mickey's next Mission turns out to be the assassination of two
internal threats to Dr. X's power - William and Mary.   After killing the
priest, Mickey's love for Mary breaks X's reins, freeing Mickey from control.
He confronts Mary, begging her to help him kill Dr. X before the world succumbs
to his power absolutely.  Apparently, though, Mickey has become physically
dependent on Dr. X's drug, and returns for his fix - entirely against his own
will.  Dr. X learns of Mickey's intentions, and lets him go anyway, completely
sure of the drug's power. Mickey will not defect - to show Mickey his power,
Dr. X has Mary killed.  While standing over Mary's body - with her blood on his
hands - the police arrive and take Mickey into custody.
	Mickey finally wakes in the hospital, missing Mary, but forgetting (or
ignoring) the fact that she is dead, instead assuming that she just left him. 
As the album wraps up, everything starts to come back to Mickey, and he seems
to really have need of a friend - but all he sees are strangers, everywhere he
looks - even in the mirror. The hospital is a mental hospital, and he's
destined to stay for the rest of his life.  Did he imagine everything - was it
all a mindcrime?

	WOW! Couldya tell that I kinda like the album? Throughout the album are
sly little sarcasms, ironies and outright slams on most everything in the news
these days and the present condition of major institutions.  Also to be found
are literary allusions and a few little jokes (such as the nurse whistling a
Queensryche song - or was she part of the underground? Hmm...) Do yourself a
favor - listen to it.  This is the kind of Heavy Metal that would just
completely piss off all those that dismiss HM as mindless cacophony - I love
it!

    	Coop turned me on to a tape of Operation Mindcrime.  Awesome
    isn't the word.  It's like Floyd as far as a concept goes but I
    was really impressed.  Polished power.

    Ok, I had heard all the hype from even before it was released. Then
    I had to hear the rave reviews from all my friends who have the
    lp. So, I finally got around to getting this thing!
    
    It's so cool.  Probably my favorite new album!  Definitely a concept
    the metal genre should be proud of.

    I went out and bought this album (actually CD) based strictly on
    recommendations from this conference. 
    
    This is *good* stuff. Concept smacks of Pink Floyd, but the actual
    music reminds me of a "heavier" Rush.
    
    How are their earlier albums? Laserland here in Colorado Springs
    has all their CD's for $11.88 this weekend, thought I'd pick up
    something this afternoon.

    
    Rage for Order is a great album too!! If you heard Operation Mindcrime,
    Rage would sound like it was a logical predicessor. Still on the
    rebellion theme, but the tunes and mix are actually better IMO.
    Their first lp, The Warning is good, kinda like Suite Sister Mary
    of Operation: Very orchestra/operatic sounding. The EP is true metal.
    4 songs of no BS...worth having, but production is nowhere it is
    on the lable-backed releases.

                As pointed  out  earlier,  the first one is heavy
                (the EP).   The  Warning  is  fantastic, Rage for
                order is incredible.   They have not done one bad
                song on any album (funny,  I  *USED*  to say that
                about Iron Maiden.  Queensryche has  taken  their

    After the song Spreading the Disease, you hear him turn on the TV,
    switch the channel to this Religeous show where the preacher asks
    viewers to "reach down deep into your hearts and pocketbooks", and
    it sounds like he shoots the TV set??
    
    Can anyone tell me what's going on here, and/or if its supposed
    to symbolized something?? Its the only part of the stiry I can't
    quite figure out.

    My personal opinion here is that Nikki loads a shotgun with three
    shells (you can hear each one... it's a pump!) and pumps a round
    into the chamber.  I think he shoots the preacher...Not the TV...

    "Got a habit doing mainline, watch the dragon burn..." - that's
    from "OPERATION:mindcrime" (the song), isn't it? Referring to Nikki's
    life BEFORE Dr. X? So, I agree with Buck. BUT... was it Heroin that
    Dr. X got Nikki hooked on, or something else...

    It is one of Queensrhyche's songs, but I don't have the CD with
    me and I can't remember for sure - is it "OPERATION:mindcrime"?

See, this is why I'm not sure I trust you. I have the first Queensryche
album, but I thought it was only OK, not great. But from the reviews
here, I assumed this one was substantially better. I'll let you know
what I finally decide, and what a non-Queensryche-fanatic thinks of it.

                Well, if  you  didn't  like  the  first one, that
                you're definately not  cut  out  to be a fanatic.
                If you thought it  was  okay,  however,  you  may
                enjoy the rest of the  albums.   They are quite a
                bit different than the first.  The EP was a great
                deal heavier.
                
                I.  on the other hand, am  definately  a fanatic.
                Never trust one of those ;-).  I'm  sure  many  a
                people  out there would say, "Buy Guns and Roses,
                you'll love it!"

    I think the term Conceptional would typically be used in reference
    to an album on which all, or most, of the songs follow a single
    line of thinking.  Sometimes it's a story.

    Greg's got the right idea.  When you listen to OPERATION: Mindcrime,
    you'll notice how the story lines of the songs mix with each other as
    well as the tempos.  If you listen to, say cut 6 before cut 3, the
    lyrics won't make a lot of sense.  I personally LOVE "Spreading
    the Disease" which is cut 3 or 4 I think, but I have to listen to
    the whole CD every time.

    Radios have minds of their own and they know what they like.  Yours
    probably didn't want to play that tape.  I've been listening to
    nothing but HM for a long time in my car.  The other day I decided
    to take my wifes JOURNEY tape just for a change of pace.  After

    and IMO (naturally) Queensryche.  I acan't get into Floyd for the
    same reasons some folks don't get into Mindcrime.  I just happen
    to really get into this one, too much on occasion ... I should get

                pretty  funny.      In    fact,    before  I  was
                PFLOYD::ROTHBERG, I was WOODIE::ROTHBERG!!!
                
                This is from People  Magazine (of all things!) Ma
                bought it and I happened  to  be  looking through
                it (I know, "yeah sure" :-))
                
                (They even included a picture of  the band, right
                next to Ta Mara - the picture  is  what caught my
                eye.   I had to look twice to  make  sure  I  was
                actually seeing QRyche in People).

                OPERATION:MINDCRIME
                
                Hard  rock groups like KISS, Poison [ugh] and Bon
                Jovi get by on themes of wine, women and song (or
                some  variation  thereof).    With  heavy  metal,
                believe it or not, there are usually more weighty
                matters  going  on  in the lyrics.   Fans  expect
                their  headbanger  heroes  to be saying something
                deep -  or  at  least,  deeply  confusing.    The
                charlatans like Ozzy Osbourne pass off a bunch of
                saguinary mumbo jumbo [give  me  a  break].   The
                best in the genre, like  Metallica,  try to put a
                substantial   message  in  their  demolition-ball
                music -  even  if they need a thesaurus to do it.
                Queensryche joins the  classy, polished metal set
                with  the attractively ambitious  concept  album.
                The story, which evolves over  a number of songs,
                is  set in a totalitarian future  (or,  check  it
                out,  dude,  could  it be happening, like,  right
                now?  [I think we have a surfhead  writer  on our
                hands  here]).    It  concerns  a  young man, and
                ex-skinhead [?]  and junkie, who is injected with
                a psychotropic drug  and  becomes a revolutionary
                assassin for a revolutionary  cadre [I think it's
                the author here that's been  at  the  thesaurus].
                He's  then  forced to betray his  comrades  (Hey,
                this kind of thing happens on soap  operas  every
                day).   There's  also murky religious iconography
                strewn around.   It  all gets fairly tangled, but
                when Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton get through
                cranking  up  their  guitars,  Queensryche    has
                tenderized your brain so much that the cartoonish
                scenario  seems  logical, indeed inevitable.  The
                musical arrangements  on  Mindcrime are much more
                clever  and elaborate  than  norm,  evoking  such
                obscure but meritorious British  metal  bands  as
                Blossom  Toes  [who???] and Diamond  Head.    The
                dialogue,  taped speeches and sound effects  that
                tie the songs together make clear that this young
                band  from  Bellevue,  Washington spent some time
                listening to late-period Pink Floyd.  Some people
                - all right,  most  people  - will find Mindcrime
                doubly repugnant, both loud and pretentious.  For
                metal fans of discerning tastes  [:-)],  it's one
                of the year's bright spots.

                people  won't like it.  People reading  this  may
                have  been considering buying it until that part.

                discerning tastes  part  .    .    .  can't argue

    pounds from Our Price. It contains the following tracks :

    Reich.
    
    Should make some interesting watching, i wish they would release

    it, so I could listen more this afternoon....

    Now I have watched this video i have even more respect for the band.
    Their performance was excellent, the sound quality and picture quality
    are brilliant and the band look very impressive live. They reproduced
    the tracks live as accurately as they are on vinyl and The Warning
    and Take Hold Of The Flame are my favourites from the video.
                                                              
    This is a definite purchase for Queensryche fans, what a pity
    there isn't anything more recent, maybe there will be at the end
    of this tour.Wish i was going to see them.!!

    Well, I saw Queensryche last night and I gotta say they were awsome.
               
    The started off with a whole string of classics (some of which I
    didn't know) and after about 45 mins the distinctive sound of the
    hospital filled our ears.....then...I REMEMBER KNOW, followed by
    REVOLOUTION calling, all the way through to the end of the album.
                  
    Those guyz were PERFECT, they couldn't have played better if they
    had wanted to.                                                   
               
    The drummer is totally awsome, he didn't seem to ever run out of
    energy, as the two mad axeman traded solos, whilst Tate belted out
    thos tunes, like there's no tomorrow (did you know he smokes ??).
               
    I even caught a signed pick, and my mate got given a set of sticks.
               
    They encored with "The Lady Wore Black" and (I think) "Sanctuary"
    (and another I didn't know).
               
    All in all probably the best show I've ever seen.

                Smoking will  not affect you range, pitch, timbre
                or any other  part of your voice.  The only thing
                it will affect is  your ability to hold notes and
                lung capicity.  I used  to  smoke,  no difference
                since  I  quit  2 years ago.    Only  thing  that
                changed my voive was when I had my tonsils out.
                
                Whether it's true or not, got me, but that's what
                he  said.   You should have seen/heard this  guy.
                He was like 70 years old.  Used to  be  an  opera
                singer.  Man, what a voice he had.

                beginning of Mindcrime.   Dr.  Blair .  .  .  etc

                couldn't  figure out what interested me in it  so

    	Well, after months of deliberation and not having bought  any
    new albums for a while, I went  out  Friday  and  picked  up  the
    `Operation Mindcrime' album.  It KICK'S !  Although my girlfriend
    didn't appreciate listening to it at 08:00  Saturday  morning, it
    hasn't  really left my turn-table all weekend.  For once, I guess
    Rob  was  right, and I honestly believe he can pick out a descent
    album.

    Yup,  you can't go wrong with QR!

    	I especially liked  side  two  and `I Don't Believe In Love',
    the one with the words `I search for your face in the neon light,
    but you  don't  answer me' and `Eye's of a Stranger'.  Really an
    intense  album, and  a  perfect  example of how keyboards CAN be 
    used  effectively  in Heavy METAL and still make the music sound
    good.  I think the Poop  METAL is what abuses the keys and makes
    it sound - OVER done.  
    
    	Very good album for anyone wanting to get something  new.  I
    am impressed !  Will probably pick up Warning this week.

    Yeah, I just got to hear Rage for Order last week (thanks Jesse),
    and it's quite impressive.  The arrangements are EXCELLENT!  
    
    These guys have a great sound.  Whoever produced it did a nice job

    From what i have been reading recently on tour they seem always
    to finish off with 'Take Hold Of The Flame' as the encore. This
    was the first track i heard by Queensryche, what a scorcher !!!

    you out there who have The Warning or RFO thought that they are
    also concept albums?
    
    I always knew there was a message in RFO, but this am I noticed
    that there was a concpet to Warning, that all the songs fit together
    and told a story, or at least the first 6 tunes on the lp do.

    (Warning, Rage For Order, And Operation:Mindcrime) are related.

    where machines have taken over man (similar to 2112 but different).
    
    RFO touched on the leftist-fueled revolution theme that expanded into

    Saw the video yesterday to 'Get close to you' and also 10-15 minutes
    live stuff from the Operation MIndcrime tour in the UK, plus interviews
    with Chris De Garmo and Geoff Tate. The gig was the Town And Country
    Club in London and they showed the whole of Revolution Calling and
    some of Eyes Of A Stranger it was the biz. That Geoff geezer really
    puts some vocal cords into 'Revolution Calling', it is one hell
    of a demanding track to sing.

    They did that at the end of the sound check, and, believe it or 
    not, there were NO crowd there - just the band playing with the 
    lights a'flashin'.  Chris DeGarmo said it was quite hard to do coz
    he was trying to make it look like they were playing a live gig,
    but they get all their energy from the crowd, and as there wasn't
    any....

    When MTV's Metal Hammer showed the stuff they did it bloody well
    cos' the camera's turned to the crowd and it was packed with people,
    i guess i'll have to lend ya the recording i have of it on tape
    and you'll seee what i mean. Certainly the 'Revolution Calling'
    didn't really show the crowd, but for 'Eyes Of A Stranger' there
    seemed (stressing this word) to be people there. Are you sure
    that there weren't camera's there during the whole show. Also 
    MTV interviewed some fans before the show, you weren't one of them
    were you.??! 
    
    I think you should tell us more about this interviewing that you
    do , who in Queensryche did you interview ?, what did they have
    to say for themselves.?

    I go along with Brian Pithers (Radio210).  I help him out now and
    again, driving him down, and getting stuff sorted out (finding out
    when we can see the band etc..).  
                                      
    Well, we went down  and we interviewed Geoff Tate and Chris DeGarmo.  
    Geoff was just saying about how the concept of O:M came about.  
    He said that he was in a bar one night, getting drunk with some 
    guyz, and he realised they were like the local 'Mafia' and they 
    were telling Geoff about some of their exploits, so Geoff modelled 
    Dr. X around one of the guyz he met. 
                             
    They *may* have had camera there during the gig, but I was on the
    side of the stage for some of the gig, and *I* didn't see them.
                           
    Maybe clever editing ??  
         
    BTW - I would be VERY interested in seeing the tape please :-)

    IMO, OMC isn't one of those albums that really blows ya away when you
    first hear it .  For me, I liked it when I first heard it...and am
    likeing it more each time through, because I hear different things
    each time. 
    
    You may want to give it time to grow on ya.  I've been listening
    to it a lot over the past couple of weeks and I'm not getting tired
    of it yet, and I *am* still hearing new things.

    	I've got RFO on the ole walkman... I don't like it as much as
    O : M but O : M was one of those rare albums that I like instantly.
     There have only been a few others that have been able to do that.
     I guess that like most others I will eventually love this too but
    for now it's nothing campared to O : M  although.. SCREAMING IN
    DIGITAL is cool..and I like the acoustic in I WILL REMBER....needs

    I just wanted to let all you faithful Ryche fans know that Queensryche
    are the freindliest, most down-to-earth dudes in rock. I had the
    extreme pleasure of meeting them at Strawberries in Worcester when they
    opened for Def Leppard, Sept. 28. By the time, I got up to meet
    them, they already talked to at least a hundred kids, but even so,
    they had a smile and conversation for everyone. Chris DeGarmo and
    Geoff Tate handed out hugs and kisses for the girls too shy to ask
    outright(me included!) Michael Wilton had guitar tips for all the
    guys and Scott Rockenfield is a fantasy come true!!
    
     Queensryche really appreciate their fans and they promise to always
    make the time to meet them. So keep rockin' on and maybe you'll
    catch them on their N.E. run with Metallica!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    
    
    
    

Well, here's another convert for ya....

I finally (yeah, I know - it took forever!) piked up the Operation::Mindcrime
album. Well, I am pretty damn impressed! It's awesome!!!

After listening to the first side, I was ready to declare this possibly 
the best metal album I've ever heard - it was incredible! But then I was
a little dissapointed by the 2nd side. It was like they ran out of 
original musical ideas, and sort of rehashed some old sounds for the 
second side. 

But that is not to downplay the album as a whole - ts still an incredible
piece of work, both lyrically and musically. And I love the tasteful 
guitar playing - great use of acoustics, and guitar harmonies, using taste 
as well as speed, and other things not normally found on a metal album.
And the arranging and production is also top notch.

Immediate Favorties - "Suite Sister Mary" and "Revolution Calling"

Now if only the general public would pick up on this!

    I don't think that they "ran out of musical ideas" as you suggest,
    Alan, but that they intentionally reused certain musical themes in
    various songs to give the album the continuity that a single piece has.
    I think of this entire album as one musical piece, not a bunch of
    songs.  Recurring musical themes are pretty common in classical
    music.

    When are you going to put in the story line that you are writing
    for Operation Mindcrime.  I have come accross alot of people who
    still haven't heard the album and show no major interest until I
    fill them in on what the story is all about.  Then they become very
    interested.  This is definately one album worth hearing/buying even
    if you are not into Queensryche.

    Our hero, Niki, a young heroine addict is laying in a hospital bed
    when a nurse enters.  In the background you hear the latest update
    of a suspect being held for connection of the murders of several
    top political advocates.  At this point we are not aware of who
    the person in the bed is listening to the television.  The nurse
    inquires as to why the young man is still awake after curfew and
    proceeds to shoot him up with a sedative.  "Sweet dreams (you
    bastard)!"  Coos the nurse as she exits the room.
    Then the voice of Nikki.  "I remember now.  I can't remember yeterday.
    I only remember doing what they told me"...........
    
    

    Since this is a conceptual album I think that anyone willing to
    input their interpretations of the songs and how they pertain to
    the story line is welcome.  This is not a debate of the meanings
    since we all interpret what we see, hear, and feel on individual
    terms.

                on  CD,  complete  with  bonus  track,  yep,  you
                guessed it, Prophecy.   5  songs  cost me $11.99,
                but  hell,  I'd  pay  $50  for  it.    My  QR  CD
                collection  is  now  complete.  It  was  released

    Ball this weekend ?  It was a quick walk through the story line
    to OPERATION:Mindcrime mixed with typical studio poses of the band.
    I think to a devoted Queensryche follower it will make pretty good
    sense, to someone just watching the video and not knowing about
    the concept of the album, they'll be ready to watch "Armagedon It"

    I partied with Queensryche a few years ago when they were on
    tour with Kiss and relatively unknown.  My friend and I stayed at
    the Worcester Marriott (where both bands were staying) and we had
    a wild party.  Everyone from the Kiss party ended up coming up to
    our suite and we had a ball.  We didn't know who half the people
    were (nor did we really care) and most everyone sacked out on the
    floor, sofa, anywhere they could.  In the morning, we got a call
    from Queensryche's road mgr telling us to tell them to get their
    butts to the lobby.  We were surprised, to say the least.  We didn't
    know who was who, there were too many moptops to tell.  My friend
    was like "Hey!  Anyone from Queensryche here?" and Chris DeGarmo,
    Michael Wilton and the other guy got up and left.  They were cool.
    I think if the singer had been there we might have recognized them,
    but they had changed their clothes and looked like any other kids.
    
    That same night we were in the jacuzzi with Mark St. John from Kiss
    (who was in the process of leaving the band due to tendonitis or
    something) and he was telling us that he was in Kiss, but that they
    were having another guitar player replace him for the night, blah
    blah, blah.  We gave him the hardest time about it.  We were like
    "yeah, yeah, yeah, right"  We thought he was some loser kid trying
    to get us to believe him.  Paul Stanley came down and got in and
    told us the truth.  He kept going on and on about how much "hot
    and wet" women turn him on (we were in a jacuzzi) and we finally
    got up and left.  Obnoxious.

    RE: Greg: I dunno.  This was just a promo-autograph session. It
    was cool, because nobody in SC has ever heard of QR, 'cept for

    Here's my review of their show at AJ's.
    
    One word that describes Queensr}che's show at AJ's last night might be
    phenominal.  However, I think it's pretty tuff to use just one word to
    describe what I saw last night. 
            
    They played for about 2= hours...non-stop.  They didn't miss a lick.
    Every tune played sounded as if I had my CD player on, and I was
    listening to it at home.  The sound was flawless.  Here are the tunes
    that they played (not necessarily in this order):

    It was *almost* like a personal concert.  I'd say there were only
    250 people there.  I was standing right in front of Chris DeGarmo.

    	It was awsome, except for the human wall that was standing
    	right in front of me, I was right up front, the only thing 
    	stopping me from being on stage was that human wall. At any
    	rate Geoff Tate has got to be in the top 3 as far as front
    	men go. I mean he really gets into it and puts 110% towards
    	their audience's. 
    
    	And Jeff was right about them sounding just like the CD,
    	vocals were superb, along with the instruments, although
    	in the first 15 minutes I did catch the drummer dropping
    	a stick, Yes believe it or not, he dropped one, but I won't
    	hold that against them. Overall I was totally impressed, buzzed
    	and happy that the wait was well worth it.
    
    	And to see them at a small club like AJ's is even that much
    	better, which by the way, are closing their door's for good
    	after this Sunday. No more AJ's
    
    	HOLLYWOOD.........................it's break time!
    

    Steve you missed it when the drummer threw a atick up in the air
    and it got stuck in the ceiling...Agagagagagagagaga.

    check out 119.6.  It's a VERY acurate outline to the
    Operation:MINDCRIME saga.  The band tries to cover a lot of ground
    in that video ... for those who don't get into the concept of the
    album they probably think it's just another concept video, but those
    of us who REALLY get into the story line it all makes a lot of sense.
    I'm glad to see some heavy mental music for a change !!!  There's

    length video/movie (ala "The Wall").  They said if they ever got
    the bucks or the sponsorship, they would do it for sure.  You might
    note that it would cost BUCKS (as in Beau Coup) to do a vid like

    check coming in the mail....Is all their stuff conceptual.  I can
    see why my non-metal friends like it.  It's not too rough on the

    I remember seeing Kiss on the Animalize (sp?) tour and Queensryche
    opened for them, and I said to myself, who are these guys, and didn't

    Thanks Paul!  Have you listened to all of the albums?  Of the ones
    you have listened to, which, in your opinion is the best? (besides
    OMC: which I would figure is..)  They played some tunes off of
    "Rage for Order" last night didn't they?  They are soo good in concert,

    The only one I don't have is "Rage for Order".  I'll probably get
    it soon though, since I'm back on a QR kick.  I love the EP but
    "OMC" *is* the best, IMO.  I kinda got turned off of them after "The
    Warning".  It seemed as if they were trying to get some specific point
    across but I couldn't completely get it.  I should look at the lyrics
    again, now that I'm older and wiser.  Well, at least older.

    It must of been Twisted Sister, since Queensryche is still headlining
    for other bands.  Hey Flip, if you can find a copy of the EP pick
    me up one.  Tony, could you bring your copy with you to the US and
    I'll make a copy of it when you get here?  I think I'll pick up
    both Warning and Rage for order and listen to both of them, I don't
    even remember what album Queensryche had just cut when they were
    with Kiss, I wasn't impressed by them back then, but now is definately

    I went to that show at the Paradise with TS!!!  I was hanging out (it
    was a monday night), and these metal dudes I knew from Berklee were
    walking down the street...they informed me they were checking out
    Queensryche at the Paradise.  I had no idea what a Queensryche was, but
    I had $10. on me and nothing better to do so I went along.  Boy, am I
    glad I made that decision!!!!

    	Yup, that was the show!  I think I remember Alan saying before
    that he was there also.  I was doing homework the previous night
    listening to BCN's metal show and I won tickets.  I had never heard
    of either band but figured what the hell.  I thought both bands
    were great, each for a different reason.  That's kinda obvious though.
    
    	Do you remember the flyers they were giving out telling about the
    band?  I remember it saying they were finally able to quit their day 
    jobs at a hospital and that QR was now their #1 priority.  I ran out 
    and got their EP the next day. 
    
    	Shawn, TS was the headliner.  They were on tour supporting "You
    Can't Stop Rock and Roll".  I nearly sh*t when they turned the lights
    on the stage and I saw the makeup.  I had no clue what they looked like.

    The EP [in America] just says Queensryche on it. It has The Lady
    Wore Black [my personal fav!!] and the Queen of the Reich [or however

    Warning was a great album about the indians and how they were forced
    to leave their reservations, I believe...I think every album by
    Queensryche tells some sort of political story, that's what I like
    about it....
    
    I can't believe they're still headlining, they have an unbelieveably
    unique sound to them, great for the hot summer days!!

Well, I got to see and hang out with Queensryche last night. I took jc's
advice (what a silly thing to do!) and decided that the best way to get
over being sick was to go to a Metallica/Queensryche show. (I did not,
however, fulfill the part about funneling JD...)

Well, as everyone else, I was very impressed with the show! I really didn't 
think they could recreate the album onstage, but they had no problems with
any of it! Scotty was a maniac on drums, and I couldn't believe that Geoff
hits all those notes! They were really tight, and special mention should go
to their soundman, Bill, who does a great job....

Some comments from the band on questions I had:

o They would love to do a long-form video, but just don't have the bucks
  at the moment. There is talk of one in the future, but don't hold your
  breath.

o The girl who sings on "Suite Sister Mary" is a local singer from Seattle 
  that they've known for years. 

o The tour ends May 10th in Japan. They won't be back this way until the
  next tour. (They've been out for 10 months so far.)

o They didn't like the show in Providence, because they are breaking in a 
  new monitor soundman, and that was his first show. Geoff complained that
  he almost lost his voice because he had to scream so hard to hear himself.
  The new guy was a lot better up in Maine.

o I asked Chris about his equipment. He didn't go into great detail, but they
  each use 3 Marshall 100-watt heads. They run them through cabs that they
  designed themselves, and had custom built. The cabs are similar to 
  Marshalls, but are about an inch wide on each side. They threw their own
  homemade labels on the fronts.

  There was also a bunch fo rack effects, but I didn't get to take a close
  look at them.


I gotta say that these were some of the nicest guys that I've ever met in the
music business. Absolutely no pretentions whatsoever. To a man, they all
thanked me for coming out to the show, and asked if I enjoyed it, etc.
I ended up missing Metallica because I spent all that time with the band, but
I didn't mind at all.

(BTW - word of warning for the girls - Geoff suffers a little from the Ace
Frehley/Bryan Adams disease....)

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that. There didn't seem to be any tapes or
that kind of stuff going on. (And I was specifically listeding for them.
Geoff played keys on three or four songs, but that was it. They seemed to 
pick the stuff that could be played live without having to rely on 
'outside help'. The guitars sounded *very* processed, but who isn't nowadays 
(for the most part)?

    I'm not bringing a vinyl record over with me - its too much hassle
    trying to avoid getting it crunched whilst I wrestle with suitcases
    etc..  Especially as its a limited edition, no longer in print and
    my copy is signed by Queensr�che personally.

    Speaking of Tate, QR and all...I watched some of HBB Sat night and
    saw an old QR video.  I don't remember the name of the song but
    it's off "The Warning".  Just a concert video, but a good tune.
    It's really funny, after listening to QR for awhile, Geoff looks
    totally different than I expected him to.  He doesn't even seem
    to fit with the rest of the band.

Some goodies I've picked up lately:

'Overseeing the Operation' EP - its more interesting than anything else. The
best, and most drastic difference, is the opening segment of the album. After
that, they are just excerpts of the album version....

'Operation:Mindcrime' Picture Disk - you're typical picture disk. It has the
album cover on one side, and a picture of the band on the flip side.

'Speak the Word' - an interview album with Geoff Tate (only released as a
promo). This is a short (maybe 15 minute) interview with Geoff. Includes
questions about the new LP, the history of the band, and other general
stuff. If I get a chance someday, I'll transcribe it here....

Well, I certainly can't speak for the whole tour, but I *know* that in Maine
he was singing all the vocals. *Maybe* some of the harmonies are on tape,
but I don't even think that is true....

    	In Worcester, I coulda sworn the backups were taped.  There were
    no mike stands for the greater part of the show.  Did any of them
    have the head unit mike ala Sammy Hagar?  Then towards the end of the
    set, the guitarist to the right of Tate (from the audience perspective)
    did have one in front of him.  Although I noticed him sometimes not
    even near the thing but the background vocals were still being heard.

    I saw the "I Don't Believe In Love" video last Saturday.  It's pretty
    good, but like the "Eyes of a Stranger" one, you pretty much won't
    understand it if you aren't a little familiar with the Mindcrime story. 
    
    One interesting thing (for me anyway, probably not to anyone else) was
    that in this video Geoff Tate is wearing his hair almost exactly the
    same way I have been the last couple of weeks, short of top and sides
    with a longer ponytail in the back.  It was kind of wierd seeing that
    not long after adopting this new style myself.

    But it was full of cheap photographic double takes, lousy dubs on
    vocals etc... But there was a hospital scene in it, and I distinctly

    Sorry, no.  It was some ad *somewhere*.  It said "the entire O:MC album
    transcribed for guitar"...I didn't pay too much attention to it cuz I
    had done a lot of the footwork on figuring it out without it.  All I
    can say is keep an eye out for it. 

    I saw the TAB and music to Eyes Of A Stranger in Guitar (FTPM)
    recently.I'll find out the issue and let you know.

    According to Metal Hammer of a few months back, the Video will cover
    8 tracks including a couple recorded live. They did mention the tracks
    but i can't remember exactly without checking. I know 'Revolution
    calling' , 'Operation Mindcrime' and 'The Needle Lies' were mentioned
    as also were their current two releases, 'I don't believe in Love',
    and 'Eyes of a Stranger'. I don't remember seeing 'Spreading The 
    Disease' mentioned to my disappointment.

    I follow heavy metal since the early days (1969) and Uriah Heep was the
    group which passionated me until I've heard one year ago Queensryche.
    I like also other groups but real passion I have actually only for
    Queensryche (Heep remains also but especially for the seventies).
    Queensryche are different and they play real complex music with high
    intensity which makes them so different. I have all their albums
    including the early works CD. Great voice, guitars, drums, bass,
    composing, ...well, all is famous!
    I wait for their next. They really combine conceptual music with high
    execution techniques.

       So, anyone else get the vid yet? I thought it was decent myself,
    only one gripe. The vid for "Breaking the silence" is all of the
    band, with no storyline! Just seemed like one big place to show
    the story, IMO. I'll let you all know what songs are on it tomorrow,
    if it's wanted. The rest of the vids have storyline to them. I gotta
    check this out a few times though. In the lyrics booklet included
    they say they may raise more questions! More later...

    Was it really $40 where you got it? I picked it up at the local Sound
    Warehouse today for $13.95.

    I picked it up this weekend at Musicland for $18.99...

    Today in Livingston, New Jersey, a distraught and emotionally unstable
    man walked into Sam Goody's record store and began to strangle the
    nearest employees. Security teams could not handle him, as he was
    on coffee at the time. Sources say the individual kept saying the
    words "forty bucks" over and over while throttling the clerks. Later
    the man was led away quietly after surrendering to a Queensryche
    poster and a package of Ring Dings.

    Having watched it only a few hundred times so far....
    I doubt Mary was strangled....I'm suspect she did herself
    in (stabbed herself with the knife) knowing that Nikki 
    loved her but had to kill her....besides I'm not sure
    that blood coming from the mouth is common with strangulation.

    First impressions?  It's awesome!  I like the footage, and the camera
    direcion is cool.  The thing as a whole is much better than the eMpTyV
    videos!
    
    OK, anyone who still doesn't think Dr. X strangled Mary in the chapel
    is out of their minds!!!  (watch I don't believe...)  As far as Mary
    committing hari-kari, I think the knife in question was moreso for
    symbolic purposes rather than to be taken literally.

    how come one of the verses is "Your rosary wrapped around your throat"
    Now the priest is already wasted by Nikki when he's talkin' to Mary,
    so it's either Nikki who killed her by choking her with her rosary,
    and the knife she's holding in the vid was for her protection 'cause
    she suspected Dr. X would send Nikki after her, or Dr. X did it
    himself.
    
         Seeing that the above verse is from "Eyes Of A Stranger", I'm
    goin' with Nikki being the assasin of Mary.

    Sister Mary.  He kills the priest, but tells Mary "he wants you dead,
    we have to leave"...He Tells Dr. X he wants out in The Needle
    Lies....Dr. X tells Nikki "you can't walk away now".  Nikki shows up at
    the church to get Mary, but finds her already dead in "Electric
    Requiem".  I think the story is pretty clear...I don't see where people
    are getting all these weird ideas. 

                Hey Buck,  Jack was telling me QR was going to be
                on MTV (I  think  it was MTV) and would be having
                some sort of contest  as  to...  Who killed Mary.
                His vote is suicide, FWIW.

    I finally got to see the OMC video (thank Barney) yesterday.  I
    have to go with everyone that says Mary killed herself.  I don't
    think Nikki could have done it, he loved her too much.  Father
    William or Dr X might of wanted to but showed up too late.

she would "meet me on the other side". How/why would she say that if she 
didn't plan on killing herself?

    Also from watching the video it shows mary hold the knife and then
    flash backs of her on the streets.  IMO her life and love for Nikki
    just got to be too much for her.  The only thing that throws me is
    the blood coming out of her mouth.  There are some words to some
    of the songs as well, like Alan lead me to the suicide solution.  Can't
    think of them at the moment but when I do...

    Queensryche is actually one of the perfect groups having one of the
    best vocalists ever, strong guitar and bass playing, amazing drummer
    and most of all very high composition skills. I hope they will continue
    this evolution for long. I like all their LPs with Operation Mindcrime
    and Rage for Order on top.

    I heard "I Don't Believe In Love" on the radio when I was going home
    from band practice last night.  It's really amazing to me how dense
    (full) it sounded compared to the songs they played around it.
    
    Needless to say it made a dull midnight drive a little more tolerable.

                After    much    thought    and    watching    of
                Video:Mindcrime, I've come to a conclusion.
                
                (Alot of this  is  already  known, but I'm gonna'
                just hash it to keep the direction simple.)
                
                Nikki loved Mary, Mary  loved  Nikki,  but if you
                notice at one point in `I Don't Believe. . .' she
                finds  herself  staring  at  the    priest  who's
                caressing  her  face.    (When  it's  Nikki    in
                actuality)  My  assumption  is  that although she
                loves Nikki,  she's  plagued  by the nightmare of
                the priest in  her  mind from what he did to her.
                She couldn't deal with that and was contemplating
                suicide, when Dr.  X decided to strangle her with
                the  rosary.    She  really  couldn't    strangle
                herself, and as far as I can see, there isn't any
                stab  wounds  so  I'd  have to rule suicide  out.
                Since  the  priest  was  dead, it sure isn't him.
                I'd have to go with Dr. X having murdered her.
                
                Good  video !  I picked it up at Strawberry's  in
                South Burlington last week for $12.99 !  They had
                it marked down  from  $16.99  so  I just COULDN'T

    I agree completely!  I know a lot of writers intentionally leave
    details like that ambiguous to let the reader (or listener) decide for
    themselves (and think).  I wouldn't doubt at all that Geoff did this

    D & K". So I immediately grab it, and bring it into work with me.
    Now I'm listening to some decent rock, from some people who are
    born again, and the DeGarmo in question turns out to be a keyboard
    player! Last time I select a tape sittin' on the counter! Anyone

    Right, I got the Mindcrime video for Christmas, and here's my theory.
                                                            
    Dr X bumped off Mary.                                   
                                                            
    Why ?                                                   
                                                            
    Well, I reckon that Nikki was sent to Kill Mary, and he couldn't
    do it, so he gave Mary a knife to protect herself. Nikki went into
    hiding from Dr X. (or went to kill him, which he didn't do).                
                                                              
    Dr X. came into the Church and strangled Mary with the beads (remember,
    there was no blood on Mary other than from the mouth) - if it were
    a gun or knife wound she would have not been left lying on her back
    by who was found. Mary didn't get the chance to use the knife
    on Dr X.               
                                                              
    Nikki came back to the Church and saw that Mary was dead, and then
    the cops apeared, and arrested him for murder and threw him in the
    looney bin.
                                                            
    Some thoughts that helped my conclusion :-
                             
    If it was Nikki who killed her, why would Dr. X be in the hospital
    where Nikki was ? He'd hardly be bringing him a box of chocolates in 
    congratulations would he ? No, he's more likley there to kill Nikki 
    after he (Nikki) failed to kill Mary, and therefore turned against
    the Revoloution (he knew too much).
                                                            
    If Mary had bumped herself off, how did she do it ? She is hardly
    likely to strangle herself, it would be physically very difficult to 
    do. She also can't have stabbed herself, because nobody would commit 
    suicide by stabbing themselves in the *back*, and there was no evidence 
    of a knife would on the front ot the body, nor was there a gun-shot 
    wound (if I were going to do myself in with a gun, I'd stick the gun 
    to my temple or in my mouth, not in the bleedin' back!).
               
    Has anybody asked know WHY it was neccesary to kill Mary ?

    thought!) But I still say that you wouldn't be able to tell from
    that. If thay show her stabbed or cut than there's no mystery. She
    did it. If they show her strangled then there's no mystery. Dr.
    X did it. So by having the blood coming out of the mouth there is
    still a mystery. I feel that she killed herself. I'll hit the disk
    tonight with the headphones and gather more proof for my side of

    O.K. think about this. When talks about the rosary being wrapped
    around her neck maybe he means as a neckless. Think about it. When
    he finds her dead it isn't wrapped around her neck. How would he
    know it was the rosary that killed her then. He wouldn't. So I think
    he means the rosary was worn as a neckless. I do believe they show

             The Prophecy was originally written to be on The Warning.
    It didn't end up on it though (of course you know that) but they
    did play it at older shows (Live in Japan). Now there are two versions
    floating around (that I know of). 
    
         1. Metal Years Sondtrack - I beleive this they same version
    that was supposed to be on The Warning. Definatly can hear that
    Geoff is younger. The bass line on this version is all over the
    place!!! Thumbs up!!!

         2. Queensryche EP (only on CD) - New version recorded during
    the Rage for Order sessions (extra studio time???). Shows more maturity
    in Geoff's voice and all the bands' playing. The solo is close to
    the original but much smoother. Some of the bass fills are omitted

An amusing story about Geoff Tate:

When Operation Mindcrime appeared all the critics were very favourable,
except Neville Farmer in a HI FI magazine (I think HI FI News) where the LP 
was very badly received and Geoff Tate had also a bad comment. I was furious
seeing it, but that is another question.
Last year, in the same magazine (it's a friend who buys it) there was a photo
on the first inner page, featuring Geoff Tate shaking hand with a guy which
was .. Neville Farmer. The text under showed that after the bad article Geoff
Tate has registered in hotels as "Neville Farmer II" until when on tour in UK
he invited Neville Farmer to their concert. Neville declared after the concert
that Queensryche are good so Geoff shaked hand with him as friends (both seemed
to laugh on the photo).
Geoff is not only a great singer but also very smart and fair.

    Just signed in today!!!  Hi guys!  I cannot recall any other bands
    causing such disturbance with such little following.  I've been hooked
    on Queensryche since my record company screwed up and sent me 
    Iron Maiden's "Somewhere In Time" and QR's "Rage For Order" as "Double
    Metal Deal" by mistake.  Since then, The Rage has suffered the
    honorable death of being worn out, and "Somewhere" has suffered just the
    opposite; I sold it to a used record store 8*).
    
    I hope no one asks me what my favorite QR album is cause I love them 
    ALL!!!  These boys blew Metallica away last year by far!!!  It's really
    too bad that the general population seem to like power chord
    progression and 164th note double bass over intelligent yet powerful, 
    heavy yet tasteful, and talented yet not overplaying type of bands like
    QR!!!
    
    I agree with an earlier reply; QR *IS* the band of the 90's!  That is,
    if they can stay away from getting screwed by cocain snorting
    management!!!  It's really a shame that talented people such as these
    guys get shafted while poseurs like Jon Bon(I will not dignify his 
    existance by writing his full name! ) make millions!!!  No justice!!!

I agree with the point I think you were trying to make with this note (that
QR is a very talanted band), however I disagree that a band sounding exactly
like a record when playing live is a measure of talent.  I consider these
two different things that I think of in different ways.  Usually I think of
a band that sounds like a record when they're playing as dull.  I saw the
Cars several years ago and they sounded *exactly* like their records.  It
was the most boring show I've ever seen...

I've seen other bands that didn't play anywhere nearly as good as the records
live, but had a lot of energy and they were a lot more fun to watch.  

Now the band that can maintain both the energy and the precision, that's 
outstanding, but if they can do that, then I expect a little bit more from 
the show, you know a little extra improv or something to make things really
shine.  Otherwise, you may as well kick back and listen to the CD because 
that's all you're getting, the same music played at you.

NKOTB sound EXACTLY like their records when they "perform" too...

    I know what ya mean, Greg!  Boston sounded *exactly* like the record
    but their stage show needed something.  Def Lep sounded *LOUSY* IMO
    and their stage show was pretty good.  Tesla kicked some major a$$!
    As far as QR, well, they were excellent!  Most of the time, I was
    watching Scott bash the skins and that's rare for me...
    
    With the proper head lining equipment and stage room, they would've 
    kicked some serious a$$!!!

    and while I thought the show was great, I am certain that it wasn't

    Well, I donno, dude.  I was with my girlfriend(ex, now) at the 
    QR/Met concert and the QR music had great effect on her! 8) She became
    a QR fan after seeing the concert!
    
    QR is still one of the best concert I ever seen, and I was not trying
    to cut them up in any way, shape or form!!!!  Incredible live
    performance!  Even with all the stage gimmicks that Metallica had, I
    still felt like QR blew them away!!!

    One year ago QR was in Brussels opening for Metallica. I think it was a
    mistake to put together those bands which play so differently (both are
    fine in their own). The result was that many QR fans were not there
    (including me who likes "Master of puppets" but not "Justice.." of
    Metallica's). The critics wrote that QR's 1 hour show was too short
    comparing to Metallica's and that QR's show was better than
    Metallica's. I wish next time QR come with their own show. They have
    also been in Holland were they had great success.

    and that was from Todd Caudle!  I was amazed!  This is the guy that
    bad mouthed Tom Scholz of Boston for not having stage presense.  The

    Well folks, back again with more bad tidings although some of it
    is okay. At least, I know the name of the new album, it's called
    "Empire". Unfortunately, I also found out the release time is now
    sometime in AUGUST! Yeah, I said June before, this latest source
    of info was through Tower Records, so this should be reliable. 
    No idea on whether it's a theme album or not.
    
    August. He$$, why not make it December, then I can get it for Xmas!

    Empire is set for worldwide release on August 27th - the album contains
    11 tracks:
    
    Best I can, The thin line, jet city woman, della brown, another
    rainy night without you, empire, the one and only, resistance, silent
    licidity, hand on heart and Anybody listening.
    
    It was produced by Peter Collins who also did O:M.  This album is
    nothing like o:m, there is no concept and the songs have a more
    'UP' feel to them.
    
    There will be  single released before the album comes out but they
    don't know which one it will be as yet.

    My brother heard the new Queensryche tune last week on some late night
    HM show.  The station had some type of contest competing the new
    Queensryche song against another tune that's been # 1 for the past few
    weeks - Needless to say - Queensryche won.  Haven't actually heard the

     The name of the new song is "Last time in Paris". It rips!!!!
    It's a different step for the men, has a real groove to it with some
    intense offbeats. Lot more backing vocals also. WAAF said it was on the
    soundtrack to Ford Fairlane. (I think that's the movie) So everybody

    Well, its very middle ground for Tate n da boyz!  I mean, Geoff starts
    off on his errie vocals, and then almost backs away, ya know?  The
    guitar riffs weave in and out of errieness as well. Top off the varied
    (from traditional) performances with slick, Leppard-ish backing vocals
    and you have the new QR tune.  I mean, it's a good song...its not a
    GREAT song, but much better than 90% of the rubbish on AAF today, which
    still says a lot.  I think this is a smart move for QR...mixing in
    commercialism with their trademark sound/attitudes.

    Does anyone belong to BMG record club? Mindcrime is in the book
    for only $3.98!!!

    I still think that "Last Time In Paris" is pretty different for QR, but
    after hearing it a few more times, it's grown on me and I like it quite
    a bit.
    
    As far as selling out goes, if they did the song purely to get airplay
    and make money (which I doubt), then I'd say they sold out.  However,
    if they did it because they like the song or style, then they didn't. 
    I'm not in a position to judge QRs motivation to record that song, so
    I'm not going to try and judge them.
    
    As much as I like their older material, if they wanted to change their
    sound today, that's their option.  Who am I to say they have to keep
    playing what *I* like?

    They're all different, tho!  IMO if a band "diversifies" on an 
    album, sells millions copies, and the follow up sounds just like 
    the one before, this to me is considered selling out; just another
    stuck thru the "formula rock" machine and turned out by the thousands
    like doughnuts.
    
    Like someone said earlier, they made quite a stirr, to say the least,
    with Operation: Mindcrime.  What are they gonna do now?  O:M Pt 2?
    Nikki escapes from the asylum and goes on a death hunt for Dr X??
    No!  They've done something completely different.  In GFTPM interview,
    they said that they were trying to make a concept album ever since
    their first, and they hit bullseye with O:M.  They also said they
    probably won't even do another conceptual album, and will try for 
    something completely different!
    
    Let's hear it for the progressive bands that care more about the 
    artistic values rather than the monatary one.  And all power to you
    if you can achieve both!

    They still can progress on the way they are actually. Changing may
    bring better success but may disappoint old fans. In the begining I
    liked Queen (until "One night at the opera" included) but since I find
    Queen too commercial. I wish Queensr�che keeps creating excellent
    music. But if they change I don't worry as other bands practice now the
    same kind of progressive metal (Titan Force, Fates Warning, Oliver
    Magnum .. to name only few).
    Now, I don't think they'll change so much.. so I wait impatiently for
    the new CD.

    Well, if those so called fans are disappointed by a band's wish to
    diversify, than are they open minded?  I consider Styx to be one 
    of my all time favorite band, and even tho Kilroy was not a very 
    good album, in my opion, I still bought it, and I have a lot of 
    repect for the guys for taking a big risk and doing the album.
    OK, so QR seems to hve the ball rolling for the others to follow.
    Are they going to follow Iron Maiden's footsteps and keep pluggin'

QR has created a new stream in HM and they have possibilities to change while
remaining within the stream (progress). Taking risk to go commercial may force
a band to leave its original style in favor of something were they are not
necessarily very good. While Bon Jovi enjoyed success by leaving HM in favor of
his current music, Saxon, which was a promising HM band, failed up to this date
its commercial approach. Just like HM, good commercial music is not that easy 
to do by anyone.
I doubt QR will change that much with the "Empire" album and I know I'll buy
it in any case as I like them too much to miss one of their albums.
My long date (20 years) favourite band, Uriah Heep, has also changed very much
but I still love them and follow their activity.
Savatage have also introduced a big change with their "Gutter ballet" and I
consider the CD great (I like the others too).
I don't think Iron Maiden kept their glory days style for "Seventh's son..".
It was a change compared to their ultra classics "Number of the beast" and
"Powerslave" (and even compared to the very good "Somewhere in time"). And
I don't consider "Seventh son.." very inspired.
It is also true that the repeating and lack of progress kill a band's music.

    Well, I fail to see how a song with the lyrics as such as "Last
    Time In Paris" would have a commercial quality.  If nothing else, 
    "I Don't Believe In Love" sounds more commercial to me.  How does
    one decide if a song would be considered commercial?
    
    QR to me has always been a trend setter; a left fielder if you will.
    And I really can't see these guys going "commercial" and giving 
    BonJovi a run for their money.  Also, it seems that QR following has
    steadily been increasing, so with more people buying their older
    albums, were they commercial back when they recorded them?

      Well, I must admit that I didn't like QR before hearing LNIP.
      It's a good song. Being an "outsider" to the real QR sound
      (I realize that most of you in this note are QR "fans") I have
      to say it does sound a bit commercial. When I first heard it
      I thought it was a new song by the (ex)lead singer for Journey
      (Steve Perry??), only better. Maybe this time around I'll buy
      their album and actually like it.

       I was in a record store yesterday asking the guy at the counter if
    Empyre was still be released on Sept. 4th. He said it was and then
    pulled out a promo copy of it. Of course I tweeked. Would he sell it to
    me??? No. Would he let me borrow it??? No. Would he make a copy for
    me??? No. Would he play it over the store system for me??? No,"I just put
    the new Ratt in so I have to play the whole thing." he told me. 
       Well, three criminal thoughts entered my mind; 
    
    a.) Should I kill this salesman??? (^:
     
    b.) Should I steal this promo tape??? (^:
    
    c.) All of the above.
    
       Of course I didn't do any of the three. But, I did hear the title
    track last night on WAAF. It was on Rock Wars. And will be on tonight
    because it won last night. My opinion of it is it RULES!!!. It has a
    RFO feel to it. Less "commercial" than LTIP. Geoff sounds so
    incredably ball-z on it. Any Boston area listener who wants to hear

    I called this morning the HM shop to have news about the new album. The
    vendor told me that he already had a limited number of CDs few days ago
    but they are all gone and he expects new stock entry for the end of the
    week (grrrrr...). This upsets me for today. I asked how the album was
    and the vendor told me that's very fine and still different from the
    rest of the albums (he found even some Pink Floyd resemblance). I think
    I'll go and check another shop, maybe I'm more lucky.

                at Strawberries had it marked as $14.99, but that
                price looked rather suspicious to me.  The forgot
                that the album was on their play list.  $11.99 fo
                r the CD.  That Paris song isn't even on it, must
                only be on the Dice soundtrack.   Jet  City Woman
                rules!    Killer  song.    Also, the cassette (my
                friend grabbed  that)  and  the CD both came with
                tiny  slips  of    paper   that  said  "ESSENTIAL
                QUEENSRYCHE"  with pictures of  all  their  other
                CD's.   That was great!    I  haven't  been  this

No, not really heavier than mindcrime.  I'm reminded of their past albums
depending on the song.  Some songs would fit very well within O:MC, others
sound like they would fit on RFO or TW.  Still, it's Queensryche and I love
it on the first listen though.  Jet City Woman reminds me Breaking the 
Silence.

    I picked it before work today.  Most excellent album, I must say.

    The lows are lower, and the highs are higher than the O:M, me thinks.
    Such dynamics!!!  I love it!  Like J_PARSONS told me over the phone, 
    "Silent Lucidity" has Pink Floyd feel to it(comparable to Wish You Were
    Here, IMO).  Yet, on songs like "Best I Can" or "Jet City Woman", they
    ROCK!!!
    
    So far, I see no commercial value in most of the songs.  It's
    definitely QR, fer sher!
    
    I'll post song by song review later when I've had a chance to listen 
    to it further, and read the lyrics.

       My reveiw of EMPIRE is it rules the universe!!!! Of course I'm also
    not byass when it comes to QR. :^) x 1,000,000
      
      I would say it is a little lighter sounding than Operation:mindcrime
    just for the fact that there are more acoustic and clean guitars on the 
    songs. But don't be scared away this one ROCKS!!! As with every new
    release from the boys it is different from the last so don't expect it
    to sound like any QR you've heard before, just expect it to be as
    awesome as the QR you've heard before!!!

       Ya, same thing happened to me at Stawberries in Derry this morning.
    Waiting for them to open at 9:30,(of course the opened late) and when I
    get in the say "We only have the tape, CD won't be in til tommorrow" 
    and I ended up paying 8.99 instead of 6.99. Then 1.5 hours later I'm in
    the Manchester store and they have the CD and both that and the tape are
    on sale!!! I was chunced!!!

Silent Lucidity is DEFINATELY Pink Floyd sounding!  It could easily
pass for a PFLOYD song.  I was just going to mention that, but you
beat me to it.  RC, that's the same place I bought mine.  Strawberries
in Derry today.  They DID have the CD :').  They also remarked all of 
the tapes and the CD's after I asked what they were doing...

Here I come also with some impressions on "Empire".
The CD has 11 songs totalising 63 mins. The recording quality is excellent.
Now about the music:
Empire is different from all previous albums as beeing more a collection of
songs instead the usual conceptual albums. QR tried with this album to reach
a wider audience and the album is less heavy but more diversified. There are
songs in the OM style, new approaches (more rock and even orchestra usage) and
few (about 3) songs closer to RFO and W style (Empire itself included).
They use synthesizers including bass synthsizer and this may surprise sometimes.
While the usage of the bass synth is fine the other synths are nothing special.
The songs are:

1. Best I can - synths (bass and other) added and the song rocks
2. The thin line - excellent (synth also), romantic
3. Jet city woman - it rocks
4. Della Brown - an over 7 mins excellent slow + instrumental part
5. Another rainy night (without you) - potential hit
6. Empire - the best one in classical QR style (RFO,W)
7. Resistance - ok, it rocks
8. Silent lucidity - excellent slow with orchestra (violins included) recalling
			sometimes Pink Floyd's "Mother will they drop the bomb"
			from "The wall"
9. Hand on heart - potential hit
10. One and only - classic QR style, excellent
11. Anybody listening - complex structure, excellent, continuation from their
			classic style

The overall impression is fine. I listened the CD twice, once via the 
loudspeakers and at night time via headphones. The second listening hooks
better (this is also because the CD is very long to retain all immediately).
I shall not position the album compared to their other works because it's
different. After only 2 listenings I still prefer the previous 2 CDs (OM,RFO)
but it's a matter of time until I listen more this one.

Great review, I agree totally with everything you say.  As for cut
4...  it's too repetitive, I believe this one will be programmed
out of my CD player.

    I have the impression that Empire contains more love/sentimental themes
    than all the previous work (Bon Jovi ?? -:) -:) influence ??). After
    Coroner listening any song sounds more soft..
    Also it's good to signal that at the end of the album you listen more
    than 1 min of sea waves (I waited expecting some musical sound but you
    hear only some voice at the very end.
    Neverless it's an album to have and I like it.

    Picked it up last night on the way home and between the drive home and
    the drive in this morning, I've only made it through it once.  
    
    My initial impression is that it's really good.  The QR stuff tends to
    grow on my, so if I like it now, I'll probably be raving wildly about
    it in a few days.  The lyrics are very well written and intelligent and
    the music is interesting.  The title track is total intensity.
    
    I personally don't think it sounds much like the other albums (which I
    thought sounded a *lot* alike) and I find that refreshing.  But then
    again, I liked "Last Time In Paris" and I'm told nobody else did...

    This album is the only thing I've been listening to for last 24 hours,
    and it's so diverse that I have not gotten sick of it, yet.  I LOVED
    O:M from the beginning, but not like this!!!

    I was joking about the love songs because the ideea of a Queenjovi
    amused me. It's true that many of their songs are about love and
    sentiments also on preceding albums. Now I get serious.
    
    I listened again yesterday evening and today in the morning the CD.
    I've written yesterday that it was a matter of time to like Empire as
    much as OM and RFO. Well, it's ok now.
    This new album is essential Queensr�che and essential in general. All
    the songs are excellent and they mark a progress in the band's career.
    The album may be for them what Hysteria was for Def Leppard in terms of
    reaching a wide audience (and Empire is superior musically). The album
    is less immediate for some of QR's fans at first listening because it
    brings many new things. But the QR style and musical skills are there
    and they prove inventive and evolutive. Tracks like Della Brown (#4)
    and "Is there anyone listening" or "Silent lucidity" show the wide
    musical range of the album. And about range..the dymnamic range of the
    recording is one of the best ever heard.
    And it's interesting to mention DeGarmo's song writing of a great part
    of the songs.

    by Tate and was recorded separately from the rest (my little question
    is: is it a spinoff from OM time ?).

      Well, I picked it up last night along with the new Black Sabbath.
    I was real skeptical because of the success of Mindcrime. I have
    listened to it only once but I'm really impressed with it. I never
    really flipped for QR, I like their music alot. I think I am going
    to prefer this new one to all the rest. Great sound quality, I buy
    CD's. I really like the sound the guitarist has on Empire especially
    the work at the end of The Thin Line. Great stuff! This could be the
    one to really make me a devoted fan.

    "The thin line" is one of the most intense (sentimentally) and
    extremely well done. "Della Brown" has some seventies influence and
    recalls me at moments Steve Miller's "Macho city". The album contains
    enough excellent songs (11/11) to compete for this year's best album
    and I bet it will be nominated for awards.

Picked up 'Empire' last week, and gave it a few spins over the weekend. I 
think its gonna grow on me just like O:MC did. At first listen it was ok,
on the second and third time, it be really good/great!

So far, my favorite songs are "The Thin Line", "Empire" and "Best I Can", 
and "Jet City Woman". "Silent Lucidity" is amazingly like Floyd/Waters - so 
much so, that I can't even really enjoy it, sounds too much like a ripoff.

    Now I listen Empire also in the car (I've done a cassette filled also
    with songs from "The warning"). I listen the cassette since few days
    now and I really like very much the "Empire" album. Maybe "Resistance"
    impresses me less than the rest but, still, it's a good song. And it's
    important to say that listening Empire and after the best tracks from
    "The warning" (like "Roads to madness", "Sanctuary"..) it's very fine
    and shows the way QR progressed up to now.

    I've listened to it about five times since yesterday afternoon and I
    think its a very disasapointing album. The drums are so gutless ! What 
    ever happened to Scott Rokenfields thunderous beat ?
    
    Geoff seems to be holding back a bit too muich on his vocals too.

    
    I've always thought that Scott's strong point was that he was able 
    to hold back and come up with what I consider to be "tasteful" beat.
    I think this album hold up really well against their earlier efforts.

                After considerable  listening,  both in sober and
                intoxicated (:')), I have decided that as much as
                I like this album, it is not as good as the rest,
                with the exception of a  few  select  cuts.   All
                pervious albums, I cannot pick one  that  I  like
                any better than any other, but I  can  say I like
                them  all  better  than  this one.  This  is  too
                mellow  (with  the  exception  of  those few cuts
                again).   It  was fun to put all 5 disks in the 5
                disk carousel at  my  friend Jack's dorm room and
                hit shuffle play!   We  were  taking  bets  as to
                which album would be pulled  up next :').  Still,
                it is a great album even  if  it's not as good as
                the other 4.
                
                Then  again, I may say something different  in  3
                months, but I don't see that happening...

Empire is more of a rock album than a heavy metal one but still keeps the 
progressive trend. And, most of all, it contains hit material which is unusual
for QR. They proved they can do excellent hits while keeping intact their
musical quality. On the other side it's sure that some of the purist QR fans 
will not enjoy that much the new album as QR has already created a unique style.
Empire, in general, is also more lyric while the previous albums were more epic.
But what is common, is QR's ability to transmit all the sentimental intensity.

While Empire is less heavy than the previous albums, because of the dynamics it
outranges many heavy metal albums in punch. Just listen it at same (high) volume
as one of other HM albums (especially on headphones it's amazing). And the title
song itself is one of QR's heaviest.

    I gotta agree completely with thye previous reply !  With OMC, you
    kinda got caught up in the story line sometimes, which pulls you away
    from the music itself - but with empire, it's pure power ... take it as
    you need it.  I've only listened to it 2 or 3 times, and even then I
    was doing something else, but I really liked it a lot.

It was okay.  I don't have anything by QR so I was interested to see what
they sounded like.  It didn't really grab me, which is what others seem to
be saying about the album.  Maybe after hearing it a few times it may grow
on me.

If I see it again I'll try to notice more about what they did.  There
really was nothing to write home about.  Sort of reminds me of Rush videos,
I like Rush a lot, but they must do videos because they are required to by
contract or something.  I remember a live cut on HBOs video jukebox around
1978 or so doing La Villa Strangiato, that was good!

I was just surprised to see it 8 am yesterday morning.
