| 4-track cassette. We're cheap, but we have a real nice board
(read:quite) for pre-record effects/mix.
Anybody have any hints on how to get a real nice sound ? Buck ?
We're mic-ing all three guitars, and have five mic's for drums...

| Be vewy, vewy caofuw about anything that goes "direct" into the
board. Example: if you're mic'ing drums and guitar amps and the
bass is going direct, just be aware of the level of the bass, 'cuz
it'll tend to overpower the other stuff. Also, if you're using
high quality mics (especially for vocals), the voices may tend to
be louder than the other instruments.
I'm a real novice at home recording, WJB must have some advice??

Probably use my SM58 for vocals, maybe our EV.

Yo, recording dudes in SC
My suggestion is to try not to do any excessive EQing to tape, leve it
for mixdown, except for the drums...get a good drum sound to tape.
Jerry use real speakers for the recording! JC, get a new ste of
strings!! ;^) Um, try to compress as many instruments to tape as
possible...it limits the dynamic range in each inst and allows more
things to be heard (ie less clutter) when mixing down. Try and use a
good mic for vocals...a 421 or 441 would be great, even a beyer is
better than an SM58, but I guess it'll have to do if that's all u got.

| I got a question for y'all...
2EZ has finished the rhythm trax on our latest demo... I was thinking
last night of ping-ponging one of the two trax we used thru an FX
rack. Has anyone ever done this on a 4-trac ? Obviously on a 4-trac,
I don't wanna wreck the sound quality by bouncing too much... Is
this too much ? We were gonna use the other two tracs for
vocals/lead...
What do ya think ?

First, why would you wanna bounce thru effects??? (unless it was
maybe an eq)
Second, if you wanna bounce, that's fine, however, don't bounce
too much...each generation is more noise, less high end and less
overall clarity.
one, maybe two bounces are ok, more and you're asking for trouble.

| Buck, the only reason I wanted to bounce was to add some of that
"studio quality" reverberation/delay. I was just thinking of doing
one of the two trax we've used so far.
I'm real open to suggestions, if you got an idea, lets here it !

| Coop, I think we should put a "p.s." at the end of the tape saying
"This recording was made with no regard whatsoever to noise reduction."
or maybe "Recorded using Dolby A (Absent)". It might save a lot
of questions later on .........

| I just read somewhere that Dbx (or whatever) is absolutely NFG when
recording. I can't remember specifically why (u know WJB?), but
it had something to do with signal gain/loss once the signal hits
the tape. Dolby is OK.

That's been a pretty firey topic (several times) in NOVA::COMMUSIC.
The general consensus was that most had never had problems with
Dbx unless there were other problems too (bad line levels etc).
I personally don't think that one pass through a decent quality
reverb/DDL would add too much noise. It's when you layer 100
overdubs...
If you can stand to wade through a lotta keyboard/MIDI type stuff,
NOVA::COMMUSIC has quite a bit of information on home recording
(typically on 4 tracks, some 8). There was one note in particular
which was titled something like "Low budget production" which I thought
had some interesting ideas. It was kind of a long series written by
one of the noters there. If anyone's interested, I'll go look for it
and post the note number here.

| Ok! It's note 282.* in NOVA::COMMUSIC (Press KP7 to add this to your
notebook). It was written in installments and is pretty long. I'd
suggest EXTRACTing it and printing the results. It's too long to try
and read in NOTES.

| Yeah, I liked it too. He really likes the Y cords...
I was thinking last night about your prev question about the bounce to
add delay/reverb...Why don't you skip that until the final mixdown and
add it as you take the final mix out to stereo (I presume you have more
than 4 channels in the board). That way you can save the noise in the
4-track and have more flexability in the final mixdown.

| Another note regarding "home" recording....stay away from 8-tracks
as they are too difficult to re-use in a larger studio...4/2 tracks
are best...
As for the board - the mention of overpowering bass is one to
watch - also spend some time with just bass/drums - drums mic'ed
can make the music "muddy" if peaking out over the bass, etc. Bass
and Keys are best left direct (providing that the player watches
the levels) - best to track vocals after the basic's are down...
