| Whitesnake is Awesome with a capital A
I have seen them twice this last year and they've have put on
one of the best shows i've seen ...
The only problem was that the show was to short. I can understand
the first time they opened for Crue-
I plan on seeing them the 25 of july at GW- I hope they change the
show just a little bit.
Viv is one of the best i've seen live this includes when he was
with DIO.
I hope a new record is in the making- what they have now should
never break apart.
just my opinion

| Whitesnake has got to be the best new(old)band of the year. Just
look who they have for a line-up. Coverdale is great on vocals.
Cambell is one of the best axe-men around. An equal talent on
the six string axe is Vandeberg. As far as bassists go sarzo ranks
way up there. And nothing needs to be said for Tommy, he lets his
drummin do the talkin. I cant wait for this line-up to make an
album of their own. It should kick ass. Ive seen them twice and
I am going again for the concerts on the river show in Manchester
NH. Whitesnake as they are should stat together for a long time.

Have I heard anything about a new album? Yes ...
When it comes out, it will have a whole bunch of songs on
it, not previously done by them or anyone else. The record
will no doubt be black, with little teensy-weensy grooves a-
round it - leading to the center. I think they're also gonna
draw a picture on the cover and write some stuff.
Hope this helps. 8^)

last night I saw her on the bus as I was coming back from a guitar
lesson, guitar in hand.
She asked where I'd been so I told her. She then told me that her
hubbys brothers son, John, played guitar.
"He's worked for all the good heavy metal bands" she said, "like
Whitesnake and Thin Lizzy".
I replied: "Sheeesh, I'd love to be a roadie"
"No, he's not a roadie, he actually plays for them".

Note 163.0 Whitesnake at Manchester........ 3 replies
CVG::MCCORMACK 44 lines 27-JUL-1988 08:42
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last night I went to see Great White/ Whitesnake at
Manchester "ON the River" and I must say it was the best concert
I have seen yet. I only got to see the last three or so tunes that
Great White did, which were one I didn't recognize, Save All Your
Love, and Rock Me. Great White sounded very good, the lead vocal-
ist's voice was amazing (just as good as, if not better than on
their albums). The lead guitarist wasn't a Vivian, but his soloing
had lots of feel to it, which is often lost in today's world of
speed-demon clone players. The drummer sounded really powerful
and moved fast on those rides. The tunes I saw impressed me alot.
Snake opened w/ Bad Boys and it cooked, the place exploded.
I was about 15 rows back on a crate and had a great view of all
the players. They covered Slide It In, Slow An' Easy and Love Ain't
No Stranger from the previous album, and all the new disc except
Don't Turn Away.
Vivian used his Kramer NightSwan the whole show and
it sounded incredible. The sound was clean and booming. Vivian
seemed to alot of long form diminished and minor scales in soloing,
and when he used minor scales he seemed to prefer the bottom three
strings. He used very little tapping, as I believe both guitarists
have and continue to establish their own unique playing identities.
When Vivian did blues soloing (which sounded great, like you were
at a Miss. delta bar or something!!) he seemed to move up and down
the neck alot, not using scales but doing a bend or "right hand
behind the left" pull up. GREAT stuff from VC.
Adrian played two different Peavey Nitros. I never
liked ANY Peavey guitars, but his sounded FANTASTIC. He also used
a purple Fernandes, real close to his "Here I Go Again" one. Adrian
loved to use harmonic and melodic minor for solos, and I think he
did several classical bits (a bouree or caprice maybe??), and he
was both techinically and harmonically brilliant. Adrian and Vivian
also did a 5 min. duo which was awesome.
Rudy and Tommy were smokin', Tommy had a kick solo,
and Rudy was flying around the whole night, a great showman.
Coverdale IS melodic medal. He sounded JUST like the
studio, always had the crowd involved, and was hysterical to boot.
His vocal range was astounding, every song came out polished and
grabbing you by the throat. Once again, best show I ever saw, (8th
one), hands down.

I have beening hearing a lotta scuttlebutt about how Whitesnake
is a Zep ripoff (particularly in interviews with Robert Plant). I
would have never thought of this myself. Personally, in their his
hits, I never noticed much similarity. Have you noticed it? Is
it in stuff off the albums that doesn't hit the radio, or what?

| I'm glad to hear of someone else that is "unaware" of the
Whitesnake/Zeppelin similarity. I missed the boat I guess. Coverdale
seems a little preoccupied with hearing his own voice ... I mean
to me he wails away for bars upon bars that should be filled with
a subtle lead (a stringsmith raises his ugly head ...), Plant did
the same thing... other than that I can't see much comparison.

| Oh, I definitely see some similiarities between Whitesnake and LZ.
Probably not so much in the 'hits' like "Is This Love" or "Here I Go
Again", but I definitely hear it in "Still of the Night" and "Slow
and Easy".
Like Jimmy Page's comment on when he first saw the "Still of the Night"
video, and the guitarist pulled out a bow:
"I fell out of my chair, 'cause I was laughing so hard!"
There is no doubt in my mind where Whitesnake got their sound from.

Enough random "clone" cheap shots at Whitesnake. If you're going
to make a shot, at least be able to back it up with a real statement
(i.e. Plant oversings, so does Coverdale from Mr Scary II).
This is a note which shows someone who's at least thinking for
himself and investigating the music. Why listen to the Boston Herald's
music review (or anything in that rag)? I bet the reveiwer doesn't
even know his order of sharps and flats. A real valid #ucking musician,
obviously.
I'd also like to say I have 7 Led Zep albums and Zep is probably
my favorite band of all time. Having said that, now for the hardware.
Jimmy Page has no *ucking right to cut down musicians of the likes of
Vandenberg or Campbell. I saw these two play live, and they were
the most fluent live guitarists I have ever seen (I have played
guitar intensely for 5 years, and would know a blatant mistake if
I heard/saw one). Page is INFAMOUS for live screw-ups (Live Aid,
Atlantic Reunion, countless concerts). Four of my cousins ( 2 are
in working bands) said Jimmy was the worst live player they ever
saw. Jimmy's current work is awful. I have heard Outrider, it
is countless slide guitars slurred incohesively, raunchy 5 chords
and repetitive pentatonic blues. JImmy is a burnt out star lashing
out at someone who's making it.
Plant has my 2nd fav voice of all time (Greg Lake 1st). His
vocal range and variety of voices astound me. Principle of Moments
and Pictures at 11 are GREAT albums. He took on the visionary Robbie
Blunt and made 2 landmark progressive/mystic pop albums. Big Log
is an amazing guitar song.
This whole time during the early/mid 80's, Plant turned a blind
eye to Led Zep, but with CLASS, out of respect for Bonham. It was
time to get on with it, music to be written, etc. Even in his recent
Rolling Stone Interview he intelligently brushed aside the clone
questions, being a thinking man when he could have looked like a
real ass*ole like Page. Now, a recent wave of clever remarks from
Robert. Why does eveyone love Now and Zen? It is self-indulgent
top 40 trash from a genius.
Get off the blind Zep love trip.....take 'Snake for what they
are and Page for what he isn't.

| What about old/new Whitesnake and the usual one about is WHITESNAKE
SELLING OUT!
I read a recent interview with cozy powell and he was saying that
the reason he left the snakes was because of the direction the
music/image was taking. I can also remember an interview with Coverdale
just after Slide it In was released and he was saying that the image
was unimportant but it was the rock & roll/blues that was important.
There has been a huge change in the snakes, I seen them on the Saints
& Sinners tour and on the 1987 tour and to be quite honest I was
dissapointed with what I saw on the 1987 tour as they appeared to
be just another band where the image was used to its limits.
I am in no way slagging off the quality of the musicians in this
note, I am just sorry to see whitesnake heading down the image path
like most other groups in order to sell more albums.
P.S. Tony, what did you think of M.S.G.? They sounded excellent
up in Scotland although the didn't get any crowd reaction until
they played a couple of old UFO tracks.

Heard one song, "Fool for your love" or something like that on the

than all the other Whitesnake. Gotta agree, Steve doesn't really
"add" anything, it could've been any of another 1000 guitarist's
doing this song. But he joined a "band" finally, not a bunch of
"individuals" and he's playing "with" them. Everyone knows what
he can do on the guitar, if you don't then you must have been sleeping
through the past five-ten years. He's playing for the band, and
thats something I can respect 'cuz he's not out there for himself

Well, I only heard that one song, so use whatever sized salt is
necessary... (BTW, it was the remake of "Fool For Your Lovin'")
But, I personally feel that if you're going to have someone capable of
playing things that few people on this earth could, like Steve Vai, in
a band, you should utilize that unique capability instead of having him
play what any of 100,000 other guitarists could play. I call that a
waste of talant.
If that's Steves choice, I can respect that, but I seriously doubt that
it is. I'm all for being a team player, but I don't think that
restricts you to playing mundane power chords.
re: .55
>Like, it could have been any 'snake song, but they just added
>a flashy guitarist.
I always thought that both Viv Campbell and Adrien Vandenberg were
pretty flashy guitarists, at least until they started playing in
Whitesnake.
My opinion is that Coverdale supresses the flash by restricting what
his 'backing guitars' can play. I also beleive that he thinks *he* is
Whitesnake and can mandate whatever he wants. He's got a great voice,
but I always thought that W-snake could have been a much better band if
they took a few more chances and spiced things up a bit. Their sound
is right out of the early '70s (with better/more production).

Unless you're referring to Whitsenake live you can't say that
Campbell and Vandenberg were stifled by Coverdale. John Sykes, now
in Blue Murder and formerly of Thin Lizzy and Tygers of Pan Tang, was
the guitarist who recorded both the "Whitesnake" and "Slide it In"
albums. Of course, HIS talent may have been suppressed by Coverdale's
control.

actually it was a band decision (according to Adrian and David)
to choose Vai. They wanted the best.
Vandenberg said that he was glad they had Steve because it
enabled him to write what he wanted, because he knows that
Vai can play the guitar parts he writes.

On the album notes, it says Adrian was unable to play on the album
due to injury, and Steve fulfilled "all guitar responsibilities'.
And with that said...please, get John Sykes back!
Sorry, but it doesn't live up to the last album. Steve won't turn
off the damn Harmonizer, giving a lot of his leads that "Just Like
Paradise" feel. Nice little half-step progression in "Judgement
Day"... why does "Kashmir" suddenly come to mind?
Maybe it'll take some getting used to...

| Forget Sykes, Vandenberg and Via. All excellent guitarists I grant
you, but Whitesnake ain't been the same since Marsden and Moody
left! In those days, the band was a great R&B band with a sound
totally different to any other "metal" groups around at the time.
Now, they sound like just another tired American-Metal band. Coverdale
is capable of better things...
I await the release of the next album with interest but I doubt
that it will change my opinion. And surely they haven't re-done
"Fool for your Lovin'" - Whitesnake's best ever.

I agree with Andy, old Whitesnake and new Whitesnake are two totally
different bands - but I love 'em both for different reasons.
Check out David Coverdale's "North Winds" real sort of bluesy with
a hint of gospel. Its pretty good (kinda old though).
Comparing the likes of Campbell/Vandenberg and Vai to Moody/Marsden
etc.. is like comparing a Porshe 954 to an old Bentley. They are
both great, but apeal to different people for different reasons.

Well, I got the tape Saturday and I got the CD today.
Its good. Its a bit more bluesy than 1987, but again, its completely
different from old Whitesnake. Steve Vai's playing DOES stick out.
His style and influence is easily recognisable. Coverdales lyrics
are as ambiguious as ever. Like on "Slip of the Tongue" is goes
"Any time, Any place, I'm just the fool who puts a smile on your
face". Think about it 8^).
Its heavier than the last album too, and has some great singles
on it (although "Fool for you loving" is a weird choice for the
first single).
A good album.

I like the new album alot even if it hasn't the immediate appeal that
'87 has or the obvious singles. Mr Vai stands out like a sore thumb
and i think his playing is refreashing and contributes well alongside
Mr Coverdale's voice. Kerrang reviewed the album as selling out on the
British rock origins that the band once had, and that Mr Vai was the
only decent thing about the album, i think this is way OTT and also
somewhat narrow minded. After a few spins, i was definitly hooked and
am looking forward to laughing at Kerrang when they get to eat their
words.
It must be extremely frustrating for any band desperate to pen just
one good rock single, when some of these bands can reel them of like
there's no tomorrow.
Roll on tour dates and let's hope they play more than just Donington
next year, if the event even goes ahead.

Slide it In. It's got some great cuts on it, Spit it Out's a riot,
Standing in the Shadow is good, Slow an' Easy, Love ain't no

but I still like their last album more (previous to Slip of the Tongue,
which is so Spinal Tap - Smell the Glove or whatever it was) than
Slide it In. As a matter-of-fact, if Slide it In is what you consider
'old Whitesnake', then I don't see much of a difference between the
styles of both albums, except for a '70's-ish guitar sound on
a couple songs of SLide it In.
Also, Pete, you're right...this album is so laden with

A review? Well, I thought the same as Candy. Kix was fantastic!
They really came out and performed fantastically! Lots of
energy and without a hitch.
Vai ... The man is phenomenal on guitar. For me to say
that is a definite compliment since I don't know hide or hair
about the technical aspects of playing. He sounded great.
BUT, Whitesnake on a whole was merely okay. A solo from Adrian,
a solo from Aldridge and a solo from Vai really cluttered things
up and prevented them from doing more songs. (all IMHO)
I can't really say much more since nothing stood out to
comment on.

| KIX...ok, like they're one of my favorite bands now!!! They were
really great in concert...MUCH better than the last time I saw them!
I really liked their raw sound, and the set they played was well paced.
They ended the night with a three-hit bang: Don't Close You Eyes--Blow
My Fuse--Cold Blooded...it really packed a punch!
Whitensake...again, they were *ok*. I mean, they had the big Stage,
all the lights, they were LOUD, but I thought their set was boring
(poorly paced), and I got bored (How bout you, Sandra?). Vandenburg
was screwing up his guitar playing...either he is under pressure
playing in a band with Vai, or his playing isn't quite back up to speed
after that hand accident he had. Vai was great, but I hated their set
(they played too much new stuff, and I don't like the new album) and
very few old tunes! I thought the ensemble as a whole was much better
and tighter than the 87/88 tour, but the Jan. 88 shows had much more
excitement IMHO.

thought I would take a look and see what is going on. I went and saw WS
last week in Columbia S.C. They didn't have Kix open for them
unfortunatly. Instead they had Bad English. I only caught the end of BE
having arrived to the show late. What I did see of them was *ok*
especially if you are an ex Journey fan. Whitesnake on the other hand
was great IMO. of course it may have had something to do with the great
seat I had; third row floor, center stage. It was like having them
perform for me personally. Vie was fantastic, I mean what can you
actually say about the man. I believe he can actually strech his hand
form one end of the neck to the other. Personally I enjoyed the guitar
solos of both players. Then again they were doing it right in fornt of
me. Adrian BTW did a very good job on his solo, it seemed like there
was plenty of speed to me. All in all I thought it was a very good show
except that I think I would have rather have seen Kix than Bad English.

| Okay, so maybe I'm just getting older, but here's how I
felt about the Whitesnake show. I've now seen them 5
times and this show was definitely my least favorite.
They were on their 3rd show in a row. Coverdale's voice
sounded awful. Also, the crowd wasn't really into it
for some reason - maybe because it was kind of cold.
The rest of the band was great as far as musicianship is
concerned. They all did solos and Vai's was incredible!
The part I really didn't like at all was all of the
choreography and guitar-kissing and tongue wiggling and
hip-swiveling at the cameras (Shoreline has big screens so
the people in the back rows and the people on the lawn can
see the show).
Everything was just TOO slick. Every move was calculated.
Too Poseur-ish for me. I thought it was getting a little
too polished two years ago - I was really totally turned
off by it this time. Why do they want to make their what
are supposed to be LIVE shows, look just like an MTV video?

| Re: -1
The reason little has been said about Whitesnake recently is that
they have been touring with the Monsters of Rock (Poison, Quireboys,
Aerosmith et al) so most of the talk about them is in relation to this.
There is another note for this but I can't remmber where.
The lead guitarist for Whitesnake is currently Steve Vai (arguably the
greatest guitarist in the rock world today). There had been rumours
about a split with Whitesnake, but Coverdale (singer) and Vai went on
record during the Monsters of Rock to scotch that rumour "We are all
just one big happy family!" type speech.
Vai has played alongside such notables as David Lee Roth and Frank
Zappa in the past and recently released a brilliant (guitar only)
composition album callled 'Passion and Warfare'. If you like guitar
you should check this out as it is essential.
