Well, now... you have to admit, they're good for a

Perhaps it's safe to say that they are Canadian metal.

| I don't know if you classify RUSH as HM but they are definitely
heavy, if not metal. 2112 is a prime example. Their stuff sounds
like instrumentals with words. Geddy's voice is annoying at best
but it wouldn't be RUSH without it. From a musicians standpoint,
their stuff is deep, very deep. Rush of jazz is a good HM diversion
for me, and I think I like everything they have ever done.

well, I might add!) and play keys is awesome. Also, I think most
drummers will agree that Neil Peart is one of the best, as well
as Lifeson and Lee. Check it out in concert; they don't miss a

I would classify Rush more as a hard rock band. They changed
after Moving Pictures. I love all their albums up to Moving Pictures.
After that I respect their musicianship but am bored by their albums.
Peart is one of the finest drummers. Lifeson is a great
guitarist with a sort of unique style. Lee is great bassist who
can sing at such high pitches that dogs squeal.

A question for Rush CD owners.
I bought "All the world's Stage" on CD, and I discovered that they
removed the last song (can't remember the title!) from the vinyl
LP to make it as a single CD.
Well tell me if you know it, what they did remove from
"exit stage left..." to do the same ?

The following is a record review of Rush's "A Show of Hands" by
Rolling Stone Magazine, April 20th, 1989.
The magazine gave is one and a half stars, which is between poor
and fair. !
Without permission..
Although their fans treat the three members of Rush as if they were
the Holy Trinity, the band chose the theme of another threesome
- the Three Stooges - as the opening fanfare for its third live
set. It's a bit of sel-effacement to be found nowhere else on this
album.
Most of the material on *A Show of Hands* is from *Power Windows*
(1985) and *Hold Your Fire* (1987). Many of the performances stick
closely to the studio versions, even down to having 'til Tuesday's
Aimee Mann repeat her backing-vocal stint for "Time Stand Still."
The sensation of a studio recording is heightened by the remarkable
sound quality of the recording (even the crowd recorded well).
Rush's prodigious chops are proven crowd pleasers, but this collection
is a morass of muscle-bound technique, quasi-profound lyrics and
bassist-keyboardist Geddy Lee's shrill screech. Even the drum solo
by the awe-inspiring Neil Peart ("The Rhythm Method"), complete
with obligatory gong crash, is not nearly as good as what he throws
into the regular songs. In spite of (or perhaps because of) all
the pyrotechnics, the music has the emotional emptiness of bad jazz
fusion. "Nothing can survive in a vacuum," as Lee squeals in "Turn
the Page."
The last four numbers begin to redeem th album, but it's too little
too late for this seventy-five minute, double-LP endurance test.
Well!

On the video for 'Show of Hands', as they do '2112', Alex Lifeson

an actual warning on the screen, saying that the record company

touchy.
Anyone know what he says?

| scribed without permission.
They,plus Kiss,Ted Nugent,Van Halen,Aerosmith,AC/DC and Blue Oyster
Cult, were one of the big bands of the second generation of heavy
metal.Rush was a perfect combination of hard metallic
sounds, progressive rhythms and mystic lyrics. And they still make
valid hard-rock music.Plus their styles have influenced the third
and forth generations of metal disciples, such as Fates Warning,Stryper
and most notably of late,Dream Theater.
Granted,Geddy Lee ain't exactly young-looking,but he's got the young
boy in his high-pitched singing voice. And alex Lifeson, with his
yuppie hairstyle, still can shred.Neil Peart-the darkness that haunts
his face also haunts his lyrics.
Rush hasn't made it easy on themselves. They aren't trying to be
the hippest metal band around. One reason is natural:age. And
secondly, the group hasn't stuck to its metal roots. In 1973,when
they first started, they were into Led Zeppelin.Since then they've
explored different rhythms and sounds.Eight years ago they were
inspired by the ethnic dabblings of new wave artists such as the
Police and Talking Heads. Now Geddy is fascinated by the sound of
pianos. Will that be on their next record?Who knows!
Geddy says,There are so many influences. Its very difficult to label
us by what sound we have now.It has something in common with Metallic's
style, but even that is so far removed from us.I've always associated
metal with a darker side, which we have had in our career. But if
you have to label us,hard rock suits us better. Its not as limiting
as metal, especially if you label it progressive hard rock.
Rush exists the way it is.And for Geddy, the whole concept of trying
to portray his personality is a very strange priority. Its very
distracting. The best thing is to just be and do and let your action-
your music-do the talking.
Geddy Lee and the rest of Rush prefer the way taken by more serious
artists throughout history. They let the work speak for itself.

I have the feeling that both of these occured...
-For some reason, the mic was off and
-for some other reason, they couldn't use another camera shot
So they figured they'd cover it up with something interesting like
that. It would be interesting to find out what he said, because,
unless I'm mistaken, Someone (geddy or alex) says something at that
point in the song, but the lyrics tend to change every year.

fairly new to this file. Just one thing to say about RUSH. They're
the best. (except of course, for Zeppelin). The sounds they produce
are inredible! Neil IS the best drummer...ever. I have to admit,
ever since, Signals, it's taken me a little longer to get use to
they're changing style, but it's still Rush. Can anyone here tell
me where I can findthe Rush album: Rush - Rush through time.
It's a greatest hit type album that came out about 1980.
I was so into Rush at one time that in the early 89's I redid my
van into a Rush van. It was dark blue, all dressed up, inside and
out. It had a large hand painted "Fly by Night" on each side.

"Rush Through Time" was an English import, so, like all English
imports, you really have to hunt them down.
As a Rush fan for a long time, I hurt to say this, but I hope that Rush
disbands in the near future. After "Hold Your Fire", I had had enough.
Hold Your Fire had some good tunes, but it's getting worse. They're
almost all keyboards now, and they're getting too techno-rock for my
blood. They're still better than most bands out today, but they're new
stuff isn't helping them. They should "exit stage left" while they still
have their dignity. :-)

I hope they won't and I suggest you stop buying their recent work if
you have had enough. I think they are better than ever. Every new album is
a real pleasure to discover and you believe me or not but I also love
their first LPs a lot. Rush is a band that is evolving a lot,
they won't stay and play always the same stuff and that's what most
people like in them, I think.
My favorite CDs are Moving Pictures and Hold Your Fire which are from 2
different period and still very good.

I didn't mean for you to take offense be my earlier statements. As far
as my purchasing of Rush material, I will always buy it, because it is
always good.
The points I'm trying to make are that through Rush's evolution,
especially their last studio album, they are losing the feeling and
sound that the started with and are famous for. The new stuff is still
a cut above most other rock, but as far as Rush goes, and I think a lot
of people will agree with me, the new stuff is a cut below their old
stuff.
However, I will still buy the next album.

| RE: the last few
I think it's important to distinguish between what is "good" and
what an individual human likes or dislikes. I'm not saying I'm
real familiar with the latest Rush material, but assuming that
they are "artists" you have to also assume that *they* must believe
that they are "progressing" along some continuum. I mean Rush will
go in the direction that they see fit (and if they're true artists,
they're not going to care what the public thinks). From what I've
heard of the recent Rush material, they ARE getting more keyboard
oriented, they're less raw and more polished, but we can't judge
whether they're better or worse -- we can only judge whether we
like them better or worse.
It's kind of like when Dylan first went from acoustic folk to electric
music; a lot of people (the folk purists) said he had sold out and
they turned their backs on him (when he was yet to write some of
his most prolific material, IMO). Or, it's like when The Beatles
stopped writing pop-rock stuff (well when they "changed" y'know?)
and did Revolver/Sgt. Pepper's/Magical Mystery Tour all within a
one year, or less, period...people said whoa man, they've really
gone off the deep end...I mean *that* was the stuff that had the
most impact.
I guess I'm just picking nits.

Same-same. 'Cept ya need a stereo tape deck for realism. The vid

As usual, it takes a bit of getting used to. I
would say the style is closest to that of Grace
Under Pressure. Less keyboards and more guitar,
though there are STILL tons of keys. I haven't

place it in my list of favorites, but as usual,
it's Rush and it's great.

Really?
On Rockline, Geddy said that the band wanted to get back
[somewhat] to a three-men-are-playing sound.
I guess Neil was cranking out lyrics for stuff faster than
Geddy and what's-his-name could write anything.
There's a song on the album that was meant to be an
instrumental, but Neil wrote lyrics for it anyway, and they
were great, so the band said to hell with the instrumental.

| Just read an interesting paper on Rush.
They are explaning how the Rush life is made of chapter, each chapter being
terminated by a live album. Each chapter that starts brings some new sounds, new
ideas new style.
Chapter 1 : 1968-1976 : with Rush, Fly by night, Caress of steel, 2112
and "All the world's stage", that's the beginning.
Chapter 2 : 1977-1981 : with a farewell to kings, Hemispheres, Permanent waves
Moving Pictures and Exit stage left
This chapter sees the serious introduction of keyboards, the end of
the medieval-fiction-oriented lyrics.
Chapter 3 : 1982-1989 : with Signals, Grace under Pressure, Power Windows,
Hold your fire and show of hands
This the technologic chapter, also new influences (afro music)
very realistic lyrics about life and human beings
Chapter 4 : 1989-? : with Presto...
New influences (Jazz on show don't tell), (Funk on Scars), very
pessimistic lyrics.
A new era has just started...
They also mention that a 2nd compilation album named "Chronicles" will be
released in August this year.

Apparently, during Geddy's illness they pushed those shows he missed
back into free dates, making more back to back shows for the group.
The show IHO (in his opinion) was very good (not as good as
the Moving Pictures tour, but then again, nothing could top that
8^) They have a movie screen so I don't think there is going to
be an open stage at the Centrum. They also do a pink floyd inspired
stage show with inflatable bunnies (he didn't go into detail on
this).
They played only 4 songs off their new album, but still the
emphasis was on the "new" Rush (post Moving Pictures era). All
in all it is definitely worth seeing, he said.

| I saw Rush not to long ago in concert. As a matter of fact it is the
third time I have seen them and everytime they gave a good strong
preformance. Some show you go to either the music sounds shit!y or you
can't understand the lyrics. Every Rush show I've seen both the music
and the lyrics where clear and sounded great. Neal Pert can kick ass on
the drums.:>)

Rush is most excellent band, dudes. Only problem is that their
lyrics are too intelligent for most people.
Look up "progressive" in the dictionary, you'll find picture of
Geddy, Alex, and Neal next to it.
"Superconductor" sums up a lot of what's going on in the rest of the
music business, I think.

Although I am a BIG fan of RUSH... I get a little worried by "HERO
WORSHIP", this is directed at any band and not just RUSH of course.
MHO, is that's it's music... it's meant to be thought provoking,
it's meant to entertain... it's meant to lift you up and slam you

| I'm sorry I missed that show in Denver, I wanted to go this time but
thought it wasn't for another couple of months or so. Guess I need to
keep up on the concert calendar a little closer.
I get a little tired of hearing how "intelligent" Rush's lyrics are.
Don't get me wrong, I really like the band and they obviously go out of
their way to write lyrics that are above the general rock standard.
But I get the feeling that some of the lyrics are trying to push that
"I write overtly intelligent lyrics" thing and it comes off as kind of
presumptuous. They just don't seem natural.
There are plenty of bands around these days that write wonderful,
intelligent lyrics. I don't see why so many people want to single out
Rush as if they're the only ones.
JMHO...naturally.

I think their old record company (Mercury) chose the songs. Rush was
against the Chronicles project from the beginning, so they really didn't
participate in the production of it too much. I'm not sure how "Show
Don't Tell" got onto _Chronicles_, since that was released on _Presto_
when Rush went with a different record company (Atlantic).

tours:
Hemispheres
Farewell to Kings
Permenant Waves
Moving Pictures
Grace Under Pressure
Signals
Power Windows
Presto
I have seen a major development in their ability to get a much fuller
sound using sequencers, etc. But, I still really like the older RUSH
stuff better. I think the concept albums with trilogy like songs were
great. They didnt have all the Keyboard stuff like today, but they
experimented around alot with guitar and Bass sounds. My favorite
Rush albums are: (I like them all, but these are my favorites)
Caress of Steel
RUSH
Hemispheres
Farewell to kings
I have a couple of bootlegs from the 74 timeframe. They were playing in

very garagey sounding, but Rush is Rush

Re: .184 >>you saw all of those tour?
I forgot one....Hold your fire. A few of the tours I saw a couple of
times. When I lived in NJ there were several arenas that they would
play so it made it very easy to see them. Also, they were not as well
known back in the 70's and early 80's so it was easier to get tickets.
I had front row center at the Woostah Centrum for the Presto tour. That
was pretty interesting being up that close, but you tend to the lose
the theatrical view when your up front. But, I had to see them once
from the front row. I paid about 150.00 for the tickets. (2)
Re: .186 >>Rush with John Rutsey on the Drums.....YUK.
I can definitly agree that the Rutsey's drumming was in the infantile
stage compared to what Peart brought to the band, but I loved the
raw crunchy sound of the band in general.(particulary the guitar)
After the first album they seemed to refine the sound alot.

| RUSH is my favorite band ever. I have all the CDs but unfortunately. I saw them
only once for, that was for the Moving Picture tour when I was living in
Houston. They came to France for Hold Your Fire but played only Paris (1000km
from where I'm :-(.
I don't think I'll see them again, so I need to find the videos (difficult to
find at the right video standard. I still haven't had a chance to hear the
latest one yet.
I really like Moving Pictures, Permanent waves, then Hold your fire, Signals,
2112, Hemishere, Power Windows, Grace Under Pressure. I also think A Show of
hand is a good resume of what RUSH can do. I play that one quite often and
advice it to novice people.

as great as other shows. I really thought it had room for improvement.
Neil sounded great! Geddy looked like Darlene on the TV show Roseane.
The laser show was the usual display and the two rabbits popped up
for Tom Sawyer. Three people were carried out after passing out.

I liked the stage setup. It was cool how it opened up. Neil's solo was
good as usual. He had some new tricks and still played alot of his
older chops. The only complaint I would have about the show is that I
could barely hear Alex. As far as Vinnie Moore, I clapped when he was
leaving the Stage....He bored me....Im not really into listening to
people practicing scales in a song. Also, the drummers double bass work
seemed really repetetive...Mr Big did much better last tour with them.
Cant wait until next tour!!

| Wrong! Moving Pictures has witchhunt. Mirrors is a track on Presto. Moving
Pictures also has Red Barchetta and Limelight 2 of my favs.
Flip, I think you will find that Rush has stages, so if you like 2112, you want
to listen to Farewell to Kings, the 1st live album All the World's A Stage, or
the third album Fly By Night.
I started listening to Rush when 2112 came out. I saw the Farewell to Kings,
Hemispheres and Permanent Waves tours. They've mellowed a lot and as
a result gotten much more airplay.
I have every album up to Power Windows. I have the rest (except the latest)
on CD.
Feel free to stop by my office and borrow some. (Ha! that would be a long

rpoblem here flip is that they are all worth buying, though id save the
first three until last. (neil doesnt even drum on the 1st). off the
bat i would buy 2112, a farewell to kings, permanent waves,
hemispheres, moving pictures. the live all the worlds a stage
recording is crap, through (man, no delete key!!!) though the songs are
performed well enough. get those then come back and talk some more
:').

So it sounds like you are recommending the 2nd group of albums. Rush has
put out 4 albums then a live album consistently. Rob is suggesting going
for the second set. I got the first 3 as a package called Anthology.
Another vote for 2112. That was my first Rush album. After that I got All
the World's a Stage despite its bad sonics. I also like Grace Under
Pressure but that is significantly different from 2112.
In summary I'd go in this order:
2112
Moving Pictures
Permanent Waves
Farewell to Kings

Hi folks,
I had the pleasure of watching Rush play at the N.E.C Birmingham,on the 13th
April.
After a long awaited return to the Uk it was good to see the boys back after
4 Yrs.(I think).
As per all the press coverage the show was upto the usually mega standards to be
expected when Rush Play Live, and although they have only recentley released a
new album, they played a excellent set which included numbers off most of their
albums,inc 2112,Farewell to Kings,Power Windows,Moving Pictures,Signals,Grace
under Pressure,Presto and their new album,Roll the Bones, all that along with a
mother of a laser and lighting shows.Alex,Geddy and Neil were all at their best
and as usual showing that they can play just as well live as in the studio,If
you are not allready a Rush fan you don't no what you are missing so go and buy
an album,treat yourself.
It's worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!..

Was that *you* man? *I* played on that session too! They had this
guitar player, Alex or something like that, who was just terrible and
they got me to come in and play most of the guitar parts 'cause he
couldn't keep time! And I got NO credit on the album either, I was

| It's been awhile since anyone has written anything here.
Hi my name is Chris Vermette and I'm new to digital but you may have
read my other notes elsewhere.
I finally found the RUSH topic and would like to enter my favorite and
worst list.
Favs : (in order of appeal)
Hemispheres
Moving Pictures
A Farewell to Kings
2112
Permanent Waves
Not so Fav : (in order of dislike)
Caress Of Steel
Grace Under Pressure
Power Windows
Hold Your Fire
Presto
I like Roll the Bones, only because they brought back the Guitar. I
agree that it doesn't hold a match to the early stuff, but it is a sigh
of relief in comparision to the mid to late eighties albums.
My favortie song IMHO has got to be La Villa Strangiato.
Followed by :
Limelight
The Trees
Hemispheres
Xanadu
Red Barchetta
Natural Science
Where's My Thing
Ghost of a Chance
Note: I like Tom Sawyer but technically speaking it doesn't hold a
match to some of thier other songs. Musically speaking of course.
I hope they are in Le Studio and are working the next installment of
the four part trilogy.
I also have a question hopefully one of you guys can answer.
here goes ...
I have heard that 2112, Farewell to kings and Hemispheres are connected
in some way. The people I talked to didn't know where the connection
was had heard there was one. Besides the obvious, Cygnus X-1 Book I and
II. Where, if at all, Does 2112 fit in? Is the guy who found the guitar
in 2112, the pilot of the Rocinante in Cygnus?
And a bit of trivia - Do you know what the three part of FEAR are. Part
three is listed in Show of Hands as Witch Hunt. I just want to see if
I'm right on the first two parts.

i really think that that is a subjective question. there was nothing
specific intended by the band themselves. if people have found such a
connection, it is just their own perspective. you may want to consider
subscribing to the usenet rush newsletter. they publish a list of
frequently asked questions and there you will find HUNDREDS of big time
rush fans. i dont recall the mailing address, but i believe it is
published someplace in this note string.

| Do you guys know the story behind that skit? It's a gem.
That show, "SCTV" was done in Canada. All those guys are Canadian
(John Candy, Rick Moranis, etc.).
The Canadian government passed a law that a certain percentage of
Canandian television programming must have "Canadian content".
The writers of SCTV understandably, viewed this as government
interference in the realm of art so they decided to do a paraody
on Canandians in an attempt to strike back, and thus have the
law backfire on itself.
Considering that during that year, when someone mentioned "Canada"
almost everyone in the country thought of "The Great White North" and
those two hosers (hardly a complimentary image of Canada), I'd say that
you'd have to think that the makers of that law are absolutely broiled
over how it was used against them.

| Actually, you are only part right.
SCTV is(was) 100% Canadian. (with the exception of Harold Ramis, who was a
writer for the show I believe).
The real reason that the Great White North Show was created on SCTV is due to
the following:
The CRTC (I think it's like your FCC) permits fewer commercials per hour than
in the US. Since the show was aired in both countries, the net result was that
the Canadian version had to be about two minutes longer. Thus the creation
of Bob and Doug.
|
46.327 | Perhaps both are true | DREGS::BLICKSTEIN | DOS Boot | Tue Jul 13 1993 13:02 | 6 |
| I think both our explanations are not necessarily mutually exclusive.
The one I posted was more-or-less from the horse's mouth though: I
don't remember his name, but the guy who played one of those hosers
(I think the actor's name was "Dave") said that during an interview
I caught.

Interestingly enough, though, I can't *tell* you how many Canadians
that I knew that actually *were* like that!! Complementary, probably
not. Accurate, I think so! At least in the same sense that there
really are a lot of young people from Southern California that are like

| Here is the latest word on the new album taken from the Rush FAQ.
Peter Collins produced the album (he produced HYF and PoW).
The album title is either Counterpart or Counterparts, and the 11
songs are:
Animate
- starts out with "1... 2... 3... 4..." (a la Tom Sawyer) and
then Neil breaks into a drum beat.
Stick It Out
- this is apparently the first single, and is supposedly going
to be released sometime around September 25-30.
Cut To The Chase
Nobody's Hero
- is not only about a friend who died of AIDS, but of victims
in general (esp. of violence)
Between Sun And Moon
Alien Shore
Speed Of Love
Double Agent
Leave That Thing Alone
- an instrumental, but whether it's part of 'Gangster Of
Boats' remains to be seen.
Cold Fire
Every Day Glory
As of June 18, John Nardachone (Atlantic's metal/hard rock contact)
has said that the album release date has been pushed back to
November.
On August 11, Will Geeslin posted that "someone at Atlantic
Records" said that the album will be released on October 19.

interesting. The last couple of Rush albums have seemed kind of boring
to me, from a song perspective. They've always been skillful
musicians, but I really don't listen for that kind of thing anymore
(maybe I never did).
One of the songs had a very pop music kind of sound to it with one of
those hooks in the chorus that you'll hear once and be humming for
days. I think they'll probably do well with this release.
Oh yeah, and as already mentioned, the guitar's up in the forefront of

| I hear the new album special last night. This is for sure the best
album Rush has done in years. The guitars are way up front and heavy.
Alex's playing is very strong and sounds a lot like Eric Johnson. Geddy
sound has also improved greatly. His tone sounds a lot like it did
on Moving Pictures and his technique is just amazing. He must have
spent the last year or so building his chops. Neil is a lot less
flashy than on previous stuff but he really finds the song's groove
well. However, if you listen closely, there is a lot of intricate
stuff going on. I'll will be definitely be first in line to buy
this one. It's being released on Tues in North America and I hear
it is coming out on Mon in Europe.
Enjoy!

they recorded Geddy's bass on one of the songs. He said they used this
ancient tube amp (that one of the studio techs had found in a TRASH CAN

added a lot of energy to the sound. He said the amp was cranked all
the way and he was afraid that it was gonna blow up the whole time.

| Steve Morse of the Boston Globe had a good review: From today's Boston
Globe 10/19/93 (Reprinted without permission... Timbo)
Rush: Challenging the mind as rock's senior statesmen
Canadian power=trio Rush scraped for years to get to the top of the
hard-rock field. Now that the group is there, Rush deserves credit for not
slipping into the arena-rock smugness of many of their peers. If anything,
the band appears increasingly comfortable with the role of senior
statesmen: Witness the new album, "Counterparts", due in stores today.
Unlike many hard-rockers who are still trying to satisfy their egos and
libidos, Rush writes new songs that attack racism and sexism ("Alien
Shore"), sympathize with a friend who died of AIDS ("Nobody's Hero"),
defend a woman concerned with mail physical abuse ("Cold Fire"), and warn
about putting up with corporate and societal lies ("Stick it Out").
Singer Geddy Lee, once a shrieky yowler who's now among the most improved
vocalists in rock, offers this statesmanlike observation in the
guitar-driven "Cut to the Chase":
I'm old enough not to care too much about what you think of me
But I'm young enough to remember the future
And the ways things ought to be.
Amazingly enough, Rush will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year. A
tour is planned to start in January (no word yet on a local date), but, for
the moment, this album will have to suffice. And suffice it does with a
jarringly virtuosic, socially conscious batch of songs that should heighten
a respect cemented in 1991 with the disc "Roll the Bones", followed by a
sold out Worcester Centrum show.
Rush may be too preachy for some listeners, and too unmelodic for others
(guitarist Alex Lifeson can still play with dental-drill relentlessness),
but this album marks a major step forward. The former Rush sin of bombast
creeps in the the new track "The Speed of Love" ("Nothing changes faster
than the speed of love", Lee sings), but most songs challenge the mind,
even as they're ripping through the brain with monster guitar riffs and the
big-beat arena-size drum sounds of Neil Peart.
Befitting Rushs role as cerebral rock philosophers, the song "Animate" pays
tribute to psychologist Carl Jung, notaly Jung's thesis of merging the anima
(feminine side') and animus (masculine side). How many hard-rock bands
delve this deep? And a bright overlay of optimism coats the last track,
"everyday Glory": "If the future's looking dar, we're the ones who have to
shine".
The band keeps that promise here.

2 2112
3 permanent waves - ONLY because of natural science, other than that
it's not that great ( same thing with Caress of steel - The

I was hoping between sun and moon would be a progressive song. It
definately sounds like a YES song title more than Rush.

Speaking of the my last message ...
Have the progressive buffs out there listened to early Genesis.
Back inthe seventies with Peter Gabriel has the Lead singer.....
Good stuff. My Favorite song from them would be The Music Box from the
album Nursery Crimes. I think the year is 1972 or 73.
And then there is ELP and their second release Picturees at an
Exhibition(if your into keys from that age).

| Yeah, I'm also a big fan of the Gabriel era Genesis. The vocal
harmonies always impressed me. You mentioned "The Musical Box", which
is a wonderful song. I also loved stuff like "Apolypse in 9/8", "Los
Endos", "Dance On a Volcano", "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" (who
album, wild story...definitely done in the "just say 'yes'" era...) and
others.
They pretty much went downhill after he left, although I did like the
live album, "Seconds Out", that they did with Phil Collins singing
right after Peter left. Interestingly enough, I also love Peter's solo
stuff, even though it's not much like the Genesis material. Most of
the new Genesis stuff was too pop sounding for me.
I was also into a lot of the earlier ELP stuff too (Tarkus, B.S.S,
etc), but haven't really listened to that stuff much in about the last
10-15 years.

still looking for other tour dates.... now the review...
Before going to the show, I hear Rush has completely changed their
light/movie show. Looks like it was changed because of budgetary
reasons. Absolutely no lasers this tour. The old cool movies got
dropped in favor of new lame movies (except for a couple of parts with
some cool 3D rendered stuff). The giant screen was generally just two
projectors showing the same thing, one reversed from the other.
Geddy was hitting sour notes left and right all show. Not much energy
involved. I was bored most of the night. The song selection was lame.
Lots of new stuff and they dropped some of my favs from the past.
They had flames and some firework type explosions though. That was
kind of cool, but would rather have had the lasers. Alex looked like
he put on weight, Neil looked tired (and actually, with the
'hat/headband' thing he was wearing, and the goatee, he looked like he
belonged in anthrax :') ). neil also sports a new set. he dropped the
double bass in favor of double pedals, dropped most of his special
percussion instruments, with the exception of cowbells for midi, and
had lots of midi things happening over his solo and some of the songs.
i always wondered how he played some of those things... midi.. the
bastard :'). musically, everything was right on, vocally and visually
though, was kind of lame. Hey, im glad i went, it was rush, but this
was by far the worst ive ever seen them at. just glad i didnt pay $35
for the seats i had. i usually like sitting in 201 for rush because of
the light show. glad i was up front where i could see the band, cause
201 would have been boring this time around.

46.391 | Late Arrival | UPROAR::THOMASM | Mark Thomas (CONTRACTOR) | Fri Sep 02 1994 02:40 | 40 |
| Seems like I've arrived at a bit of a quiet point in the Rush conference !!.
As a newie on the conferencing scene, I've been browsing around and come upon
this gem of a conference, so I'll just introduce myself.
I'm an English Rush fan, getting into them first around Permanent Waves, but
soon building up the whole catalogue. It always intrigues me that Rush have this
great oldies v newies debate - personally I love it all (except Caress of
Steel). I notice that in all the notes about fave albums, nobody mentions two of
my top 3 - Presto and Roll the Bones. I know they're neither progressive nor
traditional, but the quality of the songwriting, production and (especially)
Neil's lyrics completely blow me away - The Pass has to be one of THE best.
Like everyone else, I found Counterparts a struggle at first, but yeah, it does
grow, and well over 50% can be classed as great.
I finally got to see the band at Birmingham (England, not Alabamah !) on the
Roll The Bones tour, after over 10 years of trying. Two words sum up the
experience FU**ING AMAZING. Lots of great new stuff and a surprising amount of
the best oldies - I know the band have always been adamant that they'll play
what THEY want to, not what the fans might prefer, but perhaps the return of
Xanadu to the set might give us hope that some of the other great oldies may
make a return. Pity about the support act though, whose name (fortunately)
escapes me.
Apart from Rush, I'm into (in no particluar order);
Def Leppard, MSG, UFO, Pallas (Scottigh Prog Band - started alongside Marillion,
but didn't get the breaks), RunRig (who'll need no introduction to our Scottish
Listeners - I may be the first recorded English Fan), Tesla, Stan Bush (whatever
happened to ....), Aldo Nova, and many many more.
Any views on Roll The Bones and Presto anyone ???
Glad to be on board
