Read in The Globe on Friday that another petition for a show at Foxboro

The show's capacity has been cut from to 50K and the length has been cut to
5 hours.

Who's gonna play in 5 hours? Hopefully only the bands that I want to see.
The only thing that rots about Maine is the drive, otherwise I'd be there.
Although if Foxboro whimps again or if they end up cutting out Metallica (for
the time restrictions), I'll go to Maine. How much you wanna bet that if it's
a go at Foxboro, with the time cut, it'll still be the regular price.

20.13 | Don't blame Foxboro! | HAZEL::STARR | You grow up and you calm down | Wed May 25 1988 11:01 | 19 |
| Some clarifications are needed here:
1. The promoter, not the Foxboro selectmen, are to blame for the
first show(s) not being approved. The *day* of the Foxboro town
meeting, the promoter changed his plans from one show to two
shows, and did not have adequate security plans for both shows.
That's why the proposal was turned down.
2. When the proposal was resubmitted, there was only one show
requested, and it was approved (last night).
3. The new show doesn't have Kingdom Come (IMO, no loss), and it
looks like the opening bands are going to have much shorter sets
than originally planned (IMO, BIG loss). The show, normally
scheduled for 9 hours, has been cut to 5 1/2 hours. It looks
like we get ripped off.

For the 9 hour show, this is what I have heard, the line up will
be VH, Scorpions, Dokken, Mettalica, and Kingdom Come. If you are
worried about having 5 bands in 9 hours, I think between the first
three, they have enough material to play the duration of the concert.
It will probably be longer shows for the first three but you also
have to remember about breakdown and setup between the shows. It
will probably be a good 20 minutes to half of an hour between the
bands to get their equipment ready to Rock.
Just my opinion........

P.S. If it was up to me, the concert would be all day!!! What's
better than getting trashed and listening to great Heavy Metal?

| O.K. This is it. This is the southern boys version of what happened
up north. I saw the Monsters of Rock at JFK stadium in Philadelphia,
P.A. It was a perfect day for a 9 hour jam. When I got to the stadium
the usual vendor type approached me I graciously declined. Then
I got to the gate and they were searching people. All I was wearing
was a pair of light shorts, a tank top, and a pair of sneakers.
Needless to say they didn't want to search me, I was disappointed.
After that they took my ticket and I went in. Once inside I went
and fought the crowd to get myself a T-shirt. After getting my shirt
I wrestled my way through another crowd to get myself a drink. Once
I got a drink I went and found my seat. It was a decent seat and
with the binoculars I had I was able to see everything great. I
had timed everything just right because I wasn't in my seat 10 minutes
before the first band came out on stage which as you can guess was
Kingdom Come. They hit the stage at exactly 1:00. I haven't heard
their whole album yet but, what I heard at the concert was pretty
good. Could definitly tell some Zeppie influence was their. I also
thought the singer for the group had a real good voice. They played
about 45 minutes and exited stage. The roadies broke Kingdom Come
down and set Mettalica in a half hour. Then Mettalica came out and
started playing. Now I'm not the biggest Mettalica fan in the world
and I have seen them one time before and I thought they were just
ok, but at the monsters of rock they were great!!! They did a nice
mixture of speed then at certain intervals they would play just
a little slower. They played one song that really impressed me and
the rest of the crowd I think it was called Master of the Puppet
or something like that, but it was about a 10 minute version of
it and it was great. They played about an hour and 15 minutes and
were though, but it was all pure jammin I would definitly see them
one more time if I get a chance. It took them another half hour
to break them down and set up the next band, Dokken. Dokken was
about the most disappointing of all the bands. Its not that they
didn't do a good job and they sounded just like they did on their
albums, it's just that they didn't play all the songs I would have
liked to hear them play, no Breaking the Chains. They played about
an hour and 15 minutes and were done. This time it took the roadies
45 minutes to break down and set up. Scorpions hit the stage like
ready for action. There was lots of energy and the music was awesome.
They only played about three song of their new ablum and a lot of
their other big hits from their earlier albums. They really got
the crowd going and I thought they did an excellent job. Every bit
as good as VH if not better. Now they finished up somewhere around
5:45. By this time the people at the concert had been parting all
day and were starting to feel pretty good and started looking for
extra activities. Well the first thing that happened while they
were setting up VH was the big trash brawl. The people on the field
cleared and area and started throwing trash at each other, this
lasted about 10 minutes they got bored and quit. I messed up a little
earlier Scorps quit playing at 6:45 instead of 5:45. After the big
trash brawl came my favorite part of crowd activities. It was what
I call the bountiful bossom contest. These six girls on top of these
guys shoulders decided to show the crowd their t*ts one at a time
and as each one did it the crowd would show what they thought by
applause. Well it wound up two of them got more applause than the
rest so they showed the crowd their blessing one more time for a
final judgement. A real highlite for the days events. Well at 8:00
VanHalen finally came on stage. As was mentioned before Alex had
a massive drum set-up. Three different drum sets on a rotating stage.
They performed in their usual VH style but for some reason it didn't
seem like that raw power was there. There was the bass solo, the
guitar solo, and the drum solo all of which were good, but if anyone
saw the 5051 tour that was basically the same format they used there.
Something a little different probably would have helped. As for
Sammy busting his as* the way he was running around stage and climbing
the scaffles he sure did not look like he was hurting to me. They
also had that girl that won the MTV contest come out on stage. She
was a real joke, she didn't play an instrument, she didn't want
to look like she played an instrument, and she didn't want to sing,
so all she did was dance around the stage while VH played Jump and
they had MTV taping it, so you may see it on the tube. VanHalen
play 2 hours and the big event was over. All in all it was one of
the best shows I have ever been to. If you get a chance to see it
go of you will miss the concert of the 80's.

I should be putting this in the note for worst
concert experiences. What a waste.
I left my house (in Derry, NH) at 9 AM thinking,
"who cares if I miss Kingdom Come." I hit traffic
on route 95 still 15 miles from the exit (and 40
miles from the concert). By driving in the
breakdown lane, I saved a bit of time (not much
because soon everybody else got the same idea and
that got backed up). 95 turned into a four lane
road (it was only two). I have a 5-speed and
after a while all I could smell was clutch. I
finally hit the toll booth (which is what was
holding everybody up) at about 3:30!!! It was
raining at this point. Going was pretty good
after that until about 10 miles away from the
concert. A small one lane road led the way in.
It soon became two lane after every started going
north in both the northbound and the southbound
lanes. Cops had to come to get everybody back
into one lane so the traffic coming the other way
could pass (and was there traffic!) I was stuck
in this traffic for what seemed like forever and
we finally decided to walk . . . and walk . .
. and walk. Every time I would ask someone how
far it was we would get the same answer, "a mile
and a half or so." After about 40 minutes of
walking we see a sign, "racetrack, one mile".
Finally get there, cut my way through this *HUGE*
line, and got in. I have to mention that I was
drenched and freezing. I didn't come prepared
for this weather. I was wearing white cotton
pants, a t-shirt, a leather vest (and a digital
seniors classic golf hat!) We were all so cold,
but the worst part was not only did we miss
Kingdom Come, but Metallica and Dokken as well.
We got a piece of pizza, the Scorps came on
(opening with Blackout) and we left. It was just
too cold and none of us really wanted to see the
Scorps or Van Halen anyway. It took us forever
to get back to the car (I had to practically
carry someone) and people were still backed up
for miles getting to the concert. The tickets
say "parking included". They must have meant for
the first 500 cars that arrived. It took me 40
minutes before I could move my hands and arms
reasonably well after I got back to the car
(luckily I had clothes with me [I live out of my
car]). After all that, it took us about and hour
and 40 minutes to get back home.
It wouldn't have been so bad if we were drunk,
but we went through this hell straight.
It was pathethic. I will NEVER even think about
going to Oxford again. I don't care if it's the
MegaMonsters with Iron Maien, Queensryche, Dio,
Rush, Megadeth, Anthrax and me playing (unless I
can borrow a helicopter).

Well, somebody is gonna have to give a review with a happier ending,
so it may as well be me. I stayed with friends in Portland Friday
night, so we got on the road by 9:30 and must have just beat the
real heavy traffic. We got there just before eleven, parked for
free right next to the speedway, and hung out and partied for about
an hour and a half before going in. At this point there was still
no line to get in.
When the rain started, we got extremely wet until we saw a couple
of people standing under a large piece of plastic so we decided
to join them. Then a few more people came, and a few more until
there was a huge mob under the plastic. Then someone gets the
idea that there gonna move the plastic closer to the stage, and
move everybody with it. This is when it started to get rowdy.
All in all though, people "under the plastic" were keeping their
cool and waiting out the rain. When the Scorps came on for the
second time, the plastic got ripped up, and the rain came again,
very heavy, so we ran to the hot dog stand and stood under the
canopy. We stayed there for quite some time before the Scorps
finally came back on for the third time. By the time they did,
we were about ready to give up and leave, but we hung on. They
finally were able to finish their set and it seemed like the
rain was gonna stop, so we decided to stay.
Well, after a little more rain, and the stage change, Van Halen
finally came on stage. Sammy Hagar apologized for the screw up
and thanked the people who stayed, (which was the smallest crowd
they had played for in like 8 years), and they proceded to put on
an AWESOME show. They sounded great, they looked like they were
having a great time, it didn't rain anymore, and the crowd was
loving it. We completely forgot about all the s*%t we had gone
through. I hadn't seen Van Halen since 1982, so just the fact
that I got to see Eddie live again made it all worth while. He
was absolutely incredible. I've seen a lot of the great guitarists
that are around now, but after seeing Eddie, I'm convinced that
he is the greatest.
After the show and after waiting in the parking lot for an hour,
we decided to go north on 26 and find a short cut back to Portland.
We made a big circle and bypassed most of the traffic and were back
in our hotel room in a little over 2 hours. It wasn't exactly the
ideal day, but it was definitely a day none of us will never forget.

| Hey So I finally able to relate to you the experience of MOR at Oxford.
Or to warp the dialogue from "My Fair Lady":
THE RAIN IN MAINE FALLS MAINLY ON OXFORD PLAINS.
So at noon when we got there there was sun out and a nice 70 degrees.
We entered as Kingdom Come played. Sure they're a clone band, but at
least they are a good clone band. I heard they were from Germany, (the
good side), is that true?
There were lots of Heavy Metallettes there, with the hair all done up
in such a way that New Jersey chemical labs must work overtime. Well
they must have spent hours on the hair, but the rain took care of it
in minutes.
Dokken came on, and did alright. To show his solidarity with the crowd,
he poured a gallon of spring water on his head. Then while we soaked, he
went and got a towel to ruin the effect of his demonstration.
Metallica: either ya love 'em or ya hate 'em.
Scorpions had thier set stopped twice by a hard driving rain and lightning
storms. They really rocked. Their encore was "Rock you like a Hurricane".
They really put alot of effort into thier performance.
It was cold out, but by this time the crowd up near the stage was getting
packed and overheated and many fans had to be lifted out of the crowd and
taken to the nearby red cross tent. Thier faces were red from the body heat.
Steam was rising off the crowd. But some girls who were on guys shoulders
had to be taken away shivering. The promotor should have changed his no-
readmittance policy so fans could go to thier cars and get coats. I'm glad
I had mine. Some people were buying 4 or 5 concert t-shirts to try to stay
warm. At the end of the Scorpians, a helicopter flew in to the backstage
field, presumably with Van Halen, and the crowd went nuts.
So among the VH songs I remember them playing, in no particular order are:
Rock and Roll
Black and Blue
Theres only 1 way to rock
I can't drive 55
you really got me
best of both worlds
running with the devil
ain't talking 'bout love
Panama
Naturally Wired
Mine all Mine
How Does it Feel When Its Love?
I thought they were great. They stopped right at 11 which makes me think
it must have been in the contract to stop by then. They played to what I have
heard was the smallest crowd they played to in 10 years. One of the guys I went
with sent me this note over bitnet:
> I saw Van Halen on the Today Show yesterday. In case you didn't
>see it, I'll tell you what they said. The Interviewer asked them what
>kind of fans they had. Sammy Hagar started talking about the show that
>we saw in Maine. He said that it was one of the worst storms he had ever
>seen. He also said that some people were struck by lightning (which I
>doubt). He said that he wouldn't have stayed to see the Beatles, Elvis,
>Led Zeppelin, and the Who during a storm like that! Michael Anthony then
>said that we made just as much noise as any crowd they have had.
ROCK ON!!!

| In case you didn't catch it, MTV was showning some clips and interviews
from Monsters this weekend. Here's some of the high spots:
(1) Kingdom Come - Lead singer formerly in Stone Fury. Lead guitarist
doesn't own ANY Zep albums. The live footage sounded pretty
good.
(2) Metallica - Not used to playing at 2 in the afternoon. Live
footage included "Sanitarium" which sounded great. They don't
do love songs, they don't care if you follow the story lines
or not, and don't get into "causes". They kicked !!
(3) Dokken - Live footage included "Standing In The Shadows" and
"It's Not Love", the harmonies were horrible, didn't show Mr
Scary much. Don and Mick didn't seem real enthusiastic during
the interviews.
(4) Scorpions - Live footage included "Big City Nights" which sounded
good. Interviews showed these guys play as a team, and it shows.
(5) VanHalen - 2.5 hour show. Didn't show much live footage other
than pieces of "One Way To Rock" and "misc. guitar and animal
sound from the tapmaster. Sammy is a big Metallica fan.
That's about it, it's worth watching if you get the chance. But
be sure to change the channel when this show goes off - it's a well
kept secret but Rick Astley and Johnny Hates Jazz videos can due
more harm to you TV than a direct hit of lightning, and insurance
will not cover it as an act of God !!!

| Well, boys and girls, I just experienced the last Monsters of Rock
concert in Denver on Saturday! This reply is my review of the concert,
the musicians, the fans, the whole ball 'o wax, so to speak.
Like I said, this was the last show of the tour. I was wondering what
it would be like, whether the bands would be psyched or burned out. It
seemed to be the former! It was a very enjoyable show. It was at
'Mile High Stadium'. Really the name should be ammended to say
something about sitting a mile from the stage. This is a place where
all seats (exc the front of the floor) are equally bad. Thank goodness
for Binocs!
The weather was very nice the entire time (a big surprise). Sammy H
even commented that it was the best they'd had. It was sunny and warm
(80-90) in the afternoon and cooled off a little as the sun went down,
never got cold though. I didn't feel a need to put my shirt back on
after removing it around 2:00.
Kingdom Come hit the stage slightly late at around 1:45. They played
what seemed like a short set and were off. Perhaps they don't have
enough material for a full 1.5 hour set (?). The sound was absolutely
horrid. It was so muddy, you couldn't recognize the song until well
into it. I thought that they played reasonably well. One little
surprise was that both guitar players played PRS guitars for at least
1/2 their set! Nice. On the Zep clone thing, I didn't think that they
sounded much like 'em, just on a couple of tunes.
Metallica was up next. They started off with "Creeping Death" and went
through a nice long set which included one song from their next album
"And Justice for All". They did a really nice mix of stuff from all
the albums. They really got a lot of audience response, too. The
sound quality was also quite poor, but a little better than Kingdom
Come. You couldn't hear the vocals well the first couple of songs, but
that got corrected, and Kirk Hammets solos were lost in the mud the
entire time. A real shame too, as what I could hear of them sounded
excellent. He's top notch in my book. His main ax appeared to be a
blackout Charvel #5 with reverse headstock. It was kinda hard to tell,
we were a *long* way away.
Dokken hit the stage for about an hour and 15-20 next. They started
out with 'Tooth and Nail'. The sound was much better by this time, but
still not up to scratch. George Lynchs solos on the first few songs
were still WAY too low. Don sounded in good voice, Pilson was posing
with the best of them, Mick was pounding furiously, and Lynch was
playing well. There was none of the verbal battering which was
described in earlier notes, however, they didn't really seem coherent
as a band. It was strange! They were playing the same songs (and
playing them quite well), but they all seemed off in seperate worlds,
especially Lynch. Maybe that's just him, but he played to the bass
drum, he played to his monitor, he play to the amps, but he didn't play
to the rest of the band and not too much to the audience. He got a
little better about that after the first few songs. He had a zillion
guitars there. Only used two of them for more than one song, and none
for more than two. I think they were burned out from touring. Don
mentioned something about a live album to come out soon as part of his
rap. He needs to expand his vocab a bit, seemed to overuse the F word
quite a bit.
The Scorpions were by far the audience favorite! They were really
cookin'! They also really seemed to have a good time playing. I can't
remember what they started with, but the whole set just screamed. By
this time the sound was fixed and they sounded GREAT! Klause had an
incredible amount of energy. Mattias Jabs seemed to hold back a little
on the solos, they were very conservative. Like Metallica, they played
only songs and didn't have the big ego single member solos, although
they did jam out a bit on some of the songs. I liked that. By the
time VH finished with all their solos I was just about asleep.
Speaking of them, VH was next, and they seemed really up for the last
show! Sammy was jumping around like a chimpanze, what an enjoyable
spaz! They all seemed to enjoy themselves a lot and conveyed this to
the audience well. They did more of the old VH stuff than I thought
they would, even 'Runnin with the Devil' & 'Aint talkin bout love'. SH
said that they were doing several songs which they hadn't done the rest
of the tour. There was a nice pyrotechnic display at the end. AVHs
drum kit(s) was nothing short of AMAZING. Michael Anthonys (yawn)
'solo' really made my eyes heavy. Sammy was the only one that didn't
take a solo, as such. He did do a solo version of 'Where Eagles Fly'
with just a 12 string. His voice sounded pretty rough, he had a lot of
trouble hitting the high notes. EVH was consistantly hot, as always.
His solo started with Eruption, then Cathedral, then into some strange
sounding stuff. He didn't do the table top git 10 finger tap bit
(thank goodness) this time. Even though his solo was good, I couldn't
really get into it much, maybe I was just saturated by that time, I
don't know.
For the amount of people there, there were surprisingly few problems. I
only saw a couple of people get thrown out. There was only one fight,
that I saw. These two guys were slugging it out a few rows in front of
us. One of them must have had his jugular running through his nose, I
never saw so much blood. The people they were with broke it up. I
only saw one person get sick too. This kid sitting a couple of seats
down from us. My wife hadda wake his friend up to haul him off to the
john. They looked comatose by the time VH came out. Between the
Scorps and VH, there was a long delay and things started getting a
little crazy. One section ripped a whole bench up and started waving
it in the air (until the guards made 'em put it down).
All in all a good, long, day. We left sunburnt and happy, arriving
home around 01:00.
