I have a customer that uses several third party graphics products including AutoCAD, IGRIP, and ERGO. All these products run on Sun, HP, IBM, and SGI. He states that because of the large number of polygons that his models use, SGI has a facility called "decimation" sp. that helps tremendously with the display speed. Does anyone know if we have this capability? Thanks for any help. Karl Glock DTN: 339-5244

1296.1 | Perhaps SGI is using the original meaning of 'decimation'? | VESPER::VESPER | OpenGL Alpha Geek | Thu May 22 1997 14:34 | 18 |
When the Roman Empire included most of Southern Europe, when a Roman Legion did something wrong and needed to be punished, the commander would line everyone up and walk down the line, counting unus, duo, tres, ..., decem. Every tenth person would be summarily executed. If SGI is doing the same, then they are eliminating 10% of the polygons that are presented to it. This would give them an automatic 10% improvement. Of course, some of those executed polygons are likely to be very important to the picture, so this is not likely. Instead, SGI is probably throwing out triangles that are 'small' and hopefully don't matter too much to the picture. Sorry, we do not do any sort of decimation. Andy V | |||||

Thanks for the answer. This is exactly what they are doing according to the customer. He likes it because his models use a large number of polygons and this allows it to display very fast. He says that he can include the polygons if he needs to produce a very good quality picture. Karl Glock |
