| At face value, it sounds like you're doing software rendering
instead of hardware rendering. But there's no way to tell,
based on what you've said here. Always dangerous to speculate
without any other data.

Any information that you can provide on the display is helpful:
Shading? Lighting? Texturing? Overlays? Special requirements?

1288.3 | C-mold | ZPOVC::YINGYONG | | Wed May 14 1997 06:15 | 7 |
| The application is C-MOLD 96.10. Didn't have much information other
than those I can obtain from the Web www.cmold.com.
Have tried out a 4D40 card and the performance was good except for the
resolution.

| The 4D40T out-performed the 4D60T? That's also hard to understand.
Why was the resolution different? What resolutions were involved?

Hi,
when the 4D40T was tested with C-MOLD on the AS500, the color display
on the monitor is not rich. In lay man's term there is a line between
the shade of red & orange. So according to the C-MOLD technical guy,
the color supported by the graphics card is not good so we tried the
4D60T.
I suspect that the 4D60T may not be the official supported graphics
card . 4D40T may be & we know 4D20 runs pretty well too at another
site.
Could we have missed out something ? Like a different driver for the
graphics card ?
If someone familiar with C-MOLD tuning to make it run on the
ALphastation, that will ready help.
Thanxs.
Rgds,
Poh Ing

| Textures and texture memory may be an issue here ...
(1) Does the application use/require texture mapping?
(2) If so, is there texture memory actually installed
on either the 4D40T or the 4D60T?
Not having texture memory will slow things down a lot, if
it's trying to do texture mapping.

1288.7 | VGA mode on 4D40T? | WRKSYS::CHALTAS | Basketball is a peaceful planet! | Thu May 15 1997 10:37 | 10 |
| The 4D40T and 4D60T should have presented *identical* colors on
the screen. It may be that the 4D40T was installed without Open3D,
in which case DIGITAL UNIX treats it as a VGA device with only 16
possible colors (rather than 16 *million* possible colors), and very
low resolution (640x480 or so as opposed by 1280x1024). If the
application was doing software rendering in both cases, then
the low resolution of VGA mode could have a big (positive) impact
on performance.

Maybe you ought to touch bases with the authors of 1285.* Or as a test
use a remote client.
