1234.0. "Cannot upgrade to VMS V7.1: X server dies" by LORDS::COLE (Share and enjoy) Tue Feb 04 1997 09:15

I have been trying to upgrade my DEC 3000-500 from VMS V7.0 to V7.1 from the
SSB cd. I have upgraded DECNET, UCX+ the MUP, Open3D to V4.1 and everything
else the release notes say. I have two graphics devices on my workstation, A
intergrated Smart Frame Buffer and a ZLX-M1. The screen is connected to the
ZLX.

When the system boots I do get a CDE login screen. I type in my userID and
password, the screen goes blue, as it should, but never gets passed that.
Eventually the X server dies. I get the same symptoms when logging into SYSTEM
but if I log into another user it does log in properly but the X server dies
when I log out.

I have AUTOGENd the system many, many times to no avail.

Can anyone help. Below is the DECW$SERVER_0_ERROR.LOG file.

I have not yet tried taking out the ZLX to see if it works on the SFB.

Many thanks,

Simon

Try disabling the GL extension and see if that helps. That is where the
crash is happening.

Also, working on the SFB should be okay since it doesn't do GL.

1234.2Still doesn't workRDGENG::ASAPMon Apr 28 1997 09:018
		<This should be comming from LORDS::COLE>

I have just installel Open3D v 4.3 on my VMS7.1 workstation with a smart frame
buffer and a ZLX-E1 but the behaviour is the same.

Is there any hope for me?

Simon
1234.3WRKSYS::COULTERIf this typewriter can't do it, ...Mon Apr 28 1997 18:155
    VMS 7.1 should support the on-board HX device without any
    modification at all; without Open3D. Can you run single-
    head, HX-only?  How about single-head, E1 only (i.e., disable
    the HX)?

1234.4Same behaviourLORDS::COLEShare and enjoyTue Apr 29 1997 06:375
I took out the M1 card and rebooted. It behaved in exactly the same way.

How do I disable the HX?

Simon

Is the crash still putting the same stuff in the error log file? If so, have
you tried disabling the GL extension? Most extensions do at least some amount
of initialization when the server starts up. This could be when GL crashes.
This happens regardless of what graphics is in the box.

To disable the HX board, edit the DECW$PRIVATE_SERVER_SETUP file and set the
number of screens to 1 and the graphics device to be the non-HX board.

1234.6Problem solvedLORDS::COLEShare and enjoyWed Apr 30 1997 09:308
I have solved this problem.

In my LOGIN.COM I had a SET DISPLAY/CREATE/NODE=LORDS. For a reason known
only to VMS 7.1 this causes the X-server to fail.

I am now up and running and having fun again.
