3272.0. "Source for Archtop Pickups?" by NETCAD::BUSENBARK () Wed Apr 09 1997 09:31

Does anyone know of a dealer who sells and has in stock Kent Armstrong or
Benedetto floating pickups for an archtop in the Boston area?

Thanks

can't help other than maybe check the web for the
Benedeto home site? On a recent visit I think they
had some info on how to order some of their pickups.

So, did yous guys ever see the list price for
some of these Benedeto archtops ?

We're talkin huge bucks,, anywhere from 10k to 40k..

YOIKES!

I was just trying to find someone locally. I can buy mailorder no
problem. BTW Kent Armstrong is the son of the famous or infamous
Dan Armstrong who provided you with the "plexiglass basses and guitars"

The Benedetto floating pickup is actually a Kent Armstrong design, but
    without adjustable pole pieces.

yep... :^) I guess they aren't exactly Epiphone Quality Instruments

No, clearly!!! I've seen some of the pix on their web
site..

Some incredible wood is going into these pieces...

Sort of like the stratovarious of guitars...

Has anyone seen Benedetto's book on How to Make an Archtop guitar? He
even includes templates in the bacK!! The book is beautiful even if you
have no intention of "doing it youself" and has glossy full color pix
of his current models along with a list of whover ordered one. FYI the
list includes Jimmy Bruno, Johnny Smith and...Leo Kotke!!! (gee... and
I thought he only played flat-tops!)

You know, maybe it's middle age but I'm starting to get the bug for a
decent archtop...I'm finally tring to get over my blues/rock
inferiority complex and try playing jazz again...

You know, I came across a book called the Blue book of guitars or
something like that which lists a 50's L-5 (thru '61 actually in VG+
condition for about $3,000...Not bad if you've checked the pricess of
some new archtops. BTW I saw a brand new Ibanez Artstar jazz box and
they shipped it with light strings with a plain wound string (Just
right for trying to play Bush stuff on it..) (sigh.)
Also BTW the Epiphone Emperor and Joe Pass (they might be the same
thing )guitars are FANTASTIC for the money (selling inthe Phila. PA
area for about $600-$700 if I remember correctly.

Hi!

I've been going through much of the same phase you seem to be in!
I started the slide with the Sheraton I bought last year, like
the big body and the warm tones that the semi-hollow gives..

I've been looking at the Epi- Emporer Regent, and though I've not
had a chance to get my hands on one, I know a few guys that have
had a Emp Regent, and they would buy one again with out hesitation...

regarding the Joe Pass vs. the Emporer. They aren't the same, the
body size/shape/inlay/ornamentation is the same, but it ends
about there,,

The Pass has two humbukers with the standard three way
switch, add the two volume/tones,,, the Emporer Regent
has one OBL Floating Humbucker, with one the one volume and
one tone control mounted on the pickgaurd.. The Emporer
also carries the highest price of any of the Epi Archtops..

But it does look like a nice piece.. no doubt the higher priced
gibsons, et al would be superior, but who's got the money ?

The emporer regent cost is under $900,,, I'll probably pick
one up later this year,,

Yeah, it never ends does it? No matter how much we deny it, most
guitarists I know are equipment freaks and are NEVER satisfied..my 15
year old son has inherited the "illness" too but I like to think he can
really HEAR the difference. He says he won't even think of arch tops
    til he finds "his" strat...

not so much of the 'equipment freak' for me as just
like to have a variety of guitars to use.. I always
wind up with one of course, as the primary player, but
it's really nice to have a few extras...

and now that my tastes have changed (happens when you
reach 40 I guess), I'm finding the semi hollows and the
archtop peices really intriguing, and the pointy headstock
things less and less appealing. Like, I can't phathom
even wanting to look at a Jackson,, yoikes,,,

I've always looked at it more as a variety of different tones and
sounds that a variety offers. It could be even called a different
voice. Kind of like all the different horns which have a variation
    or even drum's....

hey man,,, what ever works,, just as long as I can find one to
pickup every year to add to the collection!!!!

but yea, yer right,,, the tone qualities are really what I look
for too.. (Like I couldn't justify two 'pauls, or two strats,
but I can justify a tele, a strat, a 335, a jazz box, a paul,
a strat,,,, anyone got a few good lottery numbers to sell me ?)
