3224.0. "G3 Tour - Satriani, Johnson, Vai" by PHXSS1::HEISER (watchman on the wall) Wed Jul 31 1996 23:35

    According to Joe Satriani's web page, I'm getting an early birthday
    present this year. On October 4th, the G3 (3 Great Guitarists) Tour
    kicks off in San Francisco. The G3 Tour features Satch, Eric Johnson,
    and Steve Vai all performing indivdually with their bands, followed by
    a set with all 3 together.

    Like all birthday parties, Mom always told me to show gratitude because
    you are bound to get some gifts you don't like. All I can say about
    the G3 Tour, and respect my mother's advice, is "2 out of 3 ain't bad."

    emotively yours,
    Mike

    Yeah, Morse didn't make the grade at the audition so they were forced
    to call it G3 instead of G4. What a shame to see the once great Morse
    beaten by the emotive Vai.
3224.12Maybe its a hoax? ;-)DREGS::BLICKSTEINThe moment is a masterpieceThu Sep 05 1996 12:338
    A big multi-page poster promoting the tour was included in one of the
    guitar rags that gave three web sites as sources of information: one
    for Vai, one for EJ, one for the other guy whose name I forget.

    Not only didn't any of these sites have tour dates, none of them even
    mentioned the tour!

3224.13There's no shame in sharing the bill with Vai... is there?DREGS::BLICKSTEINThe moment is a masterpieceThu Sep 05 1996 12:408

    Mikie is just trying to come to grips with the shame of seeing the
    once great Satriani being reduced to having to share equal billing with
    unemotive guitarists like Vai while Morse plays as the headline act
    with Deep Purple.
3224.14PHXSS1::HEISERmaranatha!Thu Sep 05 1996 14:222
    yeah, Deep Purple is one gig that everyone wants on their resumes.
    It's where all the guitarists went who couldn't make the G3 cut.

   Didja ever think he might actually want a "job" with some security, as op-
   posed to doing (yet another) "one tour wonder"?

   I know if I were pursuing my playing as a career I'd prefer to have a gig
   I could think of as a "job", and not one where I only work 6 months out of
   the year (or rather, one 6 month stretch out of the next 3 years...)

   But I guess actually looking at it logically, enjoying the music, and all
   that is secondary to bickering over who's guitar god is better than the
   others.

3224.16PHXSS1::HEISERmaranatha!Thu Sep 05 1996 16:114
    Well when you sell as many CD's as Satch, you can afford to only work a
    few months every few years.

    You don't see Phil Keaggy in EITHER band now do ya?

    In any case, at least we finally got Mikie to acknowledge that
    players he admits are un-emotive like Vai are in the same "cut"
    as Satriani.

    > ...and thanks for admiting that Morse couldn't make the grade.

    Never did. Only said that he got the better Purple gig because
    Satriani couldn't make the grade of "permanent member of Deep Purple".

    Why would he leave headlining with Purple to become Unemotional
    Steve Vai's opening act.

    	Morse answer: He didn't - no need
    	Satriani answer: He did - no choice
3224.20PHXSS1::HEISERmaranatha!Fri Sep 06 1996 10:333
    More power to him, if he values Deep Purple that much. 95% of the
    music world doesn't. Some musicians are leaders, making their own
    music, others are followers, playing dredged up oldies.

    Personally, I think they should let Vai play with Deep Purple so Morse

    Purple.

    I'm curious about something, Sam:

    	Have you ever told or thought about telling a moral zealot
    	to "just change the channel" if he doesn't like what he sees/hears?

    	Or have you ever told someone to "next unseen" or just wished
    	they would?

    Thanks and have a nice weekend,
