After many years of going without I have purchased a 1979 Fender P-Bass @ the guitar show this weekend. Used to play bass back in the late 70's(a Fender Jazz bass) for about a year, but finances dictated another path. Anyway I've decided to give it another shot and am very happy with my purchase and was wondering if any of the bass players out there(Is there a bass note?) could help with amplifier recomendations. Also what music shops would anyone recommend for setup of my new baby.(Commute from Waltham to SHR) Any teachers that anyone could recommend-especially in blues and R&B styles would be especially appreciated. Thanx in advance. AL

Al, Welcome back to Thunderland. Try a DIR/TIT=BASS ... you'll find lots of notes about bass amps. And as many opinions as there are bass players. The GMA crew can advise you about dealers and such in your area. My only advice: please your self, and don't buy an amp your car can't carry! Good luck ... and find some people to jam with. Hey Al, welcome aboard. Always good to have another low end thumper around. Re amps, SWR and Trace Elliot seem to be the hot amps these days. Both are quite expensive. Both also make budget lines, but I'd steer clear of them myself. In the low $$$ space, Peavey makes better bass gear imo. SWR Redhead is a nice, powerful, versatile bass combo amp. If you want a head instead, the SM-220 and SM-400 are recommended. SWR also makes speaker cabs, but there are better values around. Peavey and Eden both make 4x10 cabs that are significantly cheaper than SWRs, at comparable quality. If you want a really small, practice/small-gig style amp, the Gallien Kruger MB200 can't be beat. Tiny, light, powerful, and about $300 on the used market. My best bang-for-the buck recommendation would be an old Ampeg V4 or V4B head. Big, heavy, weird tubes, but they sound great and are powerful enough for club gigs. You can usually grab one in the $200 range. /rick
3210.3 | For $15 I can get a "I'm the Bass Player" tee shirt | SSDEVO::LAMBERT | We ':-)' for the humor impaired | Wed Jun 26 1996 11:03 | 10 |
I'll "thump" (har, har) the Carvin bandwagon again. They make everything from tiny to huge, and they're all good values. Hard to find used, impos- sible to demo, since they're all mailorder, but they're good, solid pieces of equipment. They don't color the sound much, unless you start using the onboard compressors, etc, just a good reproduction of the instrument's sound. In my opinion, Trace, SWR, and others _do_ color the sound, and that's part of the appeal. -- Sam

Thanx for the advice so far folks. I also have an opportunity to purchase, used a Peavy Megabass head. Not sure of the wattage or price but I played the P-bass thru it last night with a Mesa Boogie cab with 2 15'rs in it. WOW! I may pass on the cab cuz it was kinda big and heavy. It had a lot of features on it most of which I did not use cuz the owner wasn't there and I didn't wanna do something I shouldn't. Anybody know anything about this amp? |
