3209.0. "Big Bux for Old Effects!" by ELESYS::JASNIEWSKI (Here I am, my anger and me) Mon Jun 24 1996 11:17

It seems that the aging pedal box effects are going into the realm
of the "classic" and the collectable, judging by what I've seen at the
New England Guitar Show this past weekend.

Now, I can understand that an old tube type amplifier actually has
some sonic character to it that's worth preserving. The finer older
instruments by Gibson, Guild, Martin, etc. But pay big bucks for some
old fuzz box or compressor? Why; cause it works like sh*t and always
    did, always will?

What's next, original IBM PCs with 8086s turn collectable and
    command big money?

Anyway, I sold a Maestro 4 stage phase shifter and an MXR analog
delay to this guy who didnt hesitate to give me $40 for them. I sold
just the circuit board to a Big Muff Pi for $10 - they want $100 for
one of these in good condition.

What do you think of these old-style effects boxes commanding big
bucks nowadays? I tell ya - hang onto *anything* MXR made, or anything
Electroharmonix made. People _want_ this stuff - for some reason.

Personally, I think it's hysterical... of course, there's
never been anything quite like that old Bad Stone Phase
Shifter II I had in another life!

I've got an MXR Flanger still kicking around, and I should
have brought it with me. Could have probably come out-a-there
50 bucks richer... and ya know, I could have sworn I saw
someone give a dealer what had to have been at least 100
bucks for a beat up cry-baby wah pedal..
	"Stop it,, you're killing me.."
I was speachless....

but, yea, I don't get it either...

In some cases, I think people want these for recording purposes. Old
effects are typically noisy and not very versatile, but often they have
one interesting sound in them that you can't get anywhere else. And
it's also often a sound that someone used on a famous recording. As
an example: one of the EH flange/chorus pedals (I think it was the
Electric Mistress) was used by Alex Lifeson on Rush's "Spirit of
Radio". As a general purpose chorus the EH wasn't that great, but
it was the only thing that would really nail that sound.

Also, some people probably want em for nostalgia reasons; they either
had one or wanted one when they were a kid.

Finally, if you spend all day looking at guitars with four-figure price
tags, $100 for a Big Muff all of a sudden doesn't seem so bad. It's a
relatively painless way to get a little vintage action.

IMHO it's a100% trend thing...

Everyone is going retro these days,,, Effects are no exception.

I could be wrong, but it just feels like a fad to me...

Gee, and I have a Big Muff PI. Maybe I should dust it off and get it
working. Orginal scratches! And like every other one I've ever seen, it
DOESN'T have the original screws! Must be worth a fortune!

P.S. Next, Rocktron (or someone) will come out with an effect which adds
"vintage noise and hiss" to your signal...

Yeah, I had a Small Stone phaser that I unloaded on some guy
for $100 not too long ago... Also had a line driver that I "threw
in on the deal", and I thought the guy was gonna kiss me...

    Sheesh.

I bought an MXR *rack-mount* flanger/doubler a few years ago at a flea
market for $10. It worked quite well and wasn't very noisy but it
took 2 full rack spaces and wasn't particularly useful to me. I sold
it to a friend for $30. About a year later, he asked if I wanted to
buy it back as he was liquidating. I bought it back and tried to sell
it at the RI show. No takers. I put it in the Want-ads. The very first
day it appeared in the Want ads a guy called me at 7:00 in the morning.
I couldn't figure out how he had seen the ad since the want-ads doesn't
hit the news stand until later in the day. He just had to have the MXR.
He drove quite a distance to get it and paid $60 for it. During the 2-3
weeks that followed I got calls from at least a dozen people asking
about the MXR. Everyone was bummed out that they missed it. One guy
didn't seem willing to accept the fact that it was gone. He asked for
the name of the guy that bought it. I didn't know the guys name but
even if I did I thought is was a little bizarre!!

Guys, let me know when my Morley Pro-panner pedal becomes "vintage".
It is close to 20 years old now and in mint condition. I'll let it
    go for $250 ;^{)

A Small Tone (:-)) for $100?!?!? I have one of those, too! Hey, maybe
if I sell of some of this junk (er, excuse me, "vintage effects") I might
have the cash for that Alvarez without selling any axes! :-)

One thing that may put the hit on this market is the availability of
good quality re-issues. GP reviewed the reissue of the ADA Flanger and
seem to think it's preferable to the original. Ibanez's TS9 re-issue
seems to satisfy all but the most die-hard Tube Screamer fans. All the
old EH stuff is eventually being redone by Sovtek (headed by Mike
Matthews, who did em in the first place).

    Cash in while you can.

Gimme a rack mounted all-tube with with a MIDI front end, tons
    of lights and smouldering sound...

    :-)

For vintage, I'll go with a box or Neve EQ's anna couple of API lunch
    boxes... Maybe a couple of long-bodies U87's...

I think the whole retro thing is just another marketing gimmick.
The mindset of being old, it must be better ... puzzles me. I had
lots of pedals when I was younger, and a lot of them were pretty
useless. I think the Mutron III was a perfect example. It was cool
if you could get it set just right, but that was a near impossibility.
The big difference with all the reissue stuff is the jump in price (!).

The designs already exist, and I'm not convinced that the price of
the necessary parts is much higher; and in many cases, they don't
even have that many components. They just know that folks will dish
out the bucks for these things. The new TS9 pedals I've seen
advertised for $109 in mail order catalogs. Beats the hell out of
me why people think these are so great, but then whatever floats your
    boat.

I gotta agree with Larry about the TS-9 thing...

I think I've owned THREE of them now...

    First box: "Cool color"
    - "Sold it"
Second box: "Hmm - everyone loves these, maybe I missed something"
    - "Sold it" (I didn't miss anything)
Third box: "Third times a charm?? Besides, it was CHEAP"
    - "Sold it" (Still didn't miss anything)

Oh, and the EH stuff was HORRIBLE!

The Morley Pro-panner is on Joe's list for $129. That's more than
    I paid for it. Hmmmmmmmm!

I've been thinking of having another sale. I hate to part with any
gear, but the money sure could come in handy these dayz. We'll see.

Holy sh&t! I can't believe some of those prices.

Unfortunately, what I thought were MXR boxes of mine turned out to be
Boss/DOD. Probably worth something though, and all of my effects now come
out of a rack (or a synth).

Fortunately, I *do* have: An MXR Envelope Filter ($125? on the list, and
it was "thrown in" with a bass speaker I bought), a Big Muff Pi, and an EH
"Muff Fuzz Crying Tone" pedal (fuzz/wah/volume). Amazing the stuff one
collects after twenty years at this gig...

Anybody want to make some offers before I head off to the pawn shop with
   this stuff? :-)

3209.16BassBalls!RECV::OMALLEYThey are the Kings of Rock. There is no one higher.Wed Jun 26 1996 11:4012
I've got the EH BassBalls stomp box (there's no way to put that in
a sentence without inviting abuse.)

I've had it for years and just started using it again. I don't use
it on every tune, but when I use my thumb it sounds cool. I haven't
decided whether to use the distortion switch or not, that sound is pretty
nasty.

Somehow my mouth starts moving when I play through it as if I have a
talk box. I'm not sure this is a good thing.

Hey at the risk of being laughed at, does anyone know where i can find
an old electro-harmonix box called a 'frequency analyser'? I've been
looking for years. I played in a band back in the seventies with a guy
that had one and i loved it. Dont know if time would lessen my affectni
for one if i could hear it now. It probably would be noisy but you
could overcome that. It was a really cool ring modulator sound that had
3 knobs. I think Jimi had one cookin on one of the cuts of the Band of
    Gypsies album.

Anyway i'd be indebted if someone could point me at one or at a
    lead to one.
