Goodness Gracious... It's Kevin Gilbert!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
[thud] Who is Kevin Gilbert? Only one of the most talented artists in music
today. You may not know the name, but you will know some of his
work. He co-wrote Sheryl Crow's "Leaving Las Vegas" and the Grammy winning
"All I Wanna Do", he's been known to hang out with Bill Bottrell (who
produced Sheryl's album, as well as the phenomenal Toy Matinee album, which
features fine examples of Kevin's lyrical genius.), he's worked with
Michael Jackson and Madonna, he played keyboards for Eddie Money, he's
scored television shows under and assumed name... He may not be a household
name, but he should be. Kevin's latest work is a solo album titled thud
(cover above*) on PRA Records. Pick it up, give it a spin... there's
something on it for everybody.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Important Note: All of the "information" presented here and on the
associated pages should be taken with a grain of salt. Most of this is
secondhand information at best. Unfortunately there is just not a lot of
information available on Kevin, hence this page. Some of the info is
derivative and/or speculative.

The View From Here (or "What's New With Kevin?")

NEWS FLASH -- This from sources on the Gentle Giant mailing list (which I
am not on, but one of the members who visited my page was kind enough to
let me know)... Apparently the members of the GG mailing list have
persuaded the band to reform and record a new album. Pretty amazing stuff!
The members of the list have all pledged US $75 to get this moving along.
So where does Kevin fit in? Well, it seems "our boy" (to quote "Smash") has
offered his studio and his services for the purposes of recording this
album! If you've ever heard Kevin answer the dread question, "What are your
influences?" you'll know he's a big Gentle Giant fan. Who knows what will
happen, but it's interesting news indeed!
The thud tour is over, but you can still check out my review of the
Philadelphia show.
What of the Tuesday Music Club? The TMC was started by Bill Bottrell and
originally featured Kevin and David Baerwald (formerly of david+david.)
Later they picked up Dan Schwartz and Brian MacLeod (the percussionist on
Toy Matinee.) These five are currently in the planning stages for a Tuesday
Music Club album. Stay tuned...
And also stay tuned for news of additions to this page and a new Kevin
Gilbert page with a few surprises on the way!

Unreleased Stuff...

Stuff from the radio or elsewhere, but not currently available on any media
I know of.

   * Blank Page There are whispered rumours of an unreleased Toy Matinee
     track by this name.
   * Long Day's Life A thud era song. I'm told it was to be the last song
on The Saga of Johnny Virgil. It has received at least limited airplay
     on Los Angeles area stations.
   * Smash From a rock opera Kevin is working on called The Saga of Johnny
Virgil. He's doing this live on the thud tour. Quite a fun and funny
     song!

Kevin and the Thud also played live and (mostly) acoustic on the Mark &
Brian Show on KLOS Los Angeles on 4/7/95. The featured songs were: Joytown,
When You Give Your Love To Me, The Tears Of Audrey, Waiting (with a neat
lyric goof by Kev), Goodness Gracious, Kashmir (from DAT, not live. As far
as I know this was the "public unveiling", if you will, of this track and
spawned the current "Kashmir" craze.), and The Ballad Of Jenny Ledge. Kevin
played guitar on the show, with Russ playing bass.

* The thud cover image was provided by The Reverend. Check out "Forward
Progress", pages dedicated to his progressive rock radio show and
progressive rock in general. He and I would like to note that the copyright
on the cover image is still held by its original owners.

Other Pages...

   * thud The aforementioned new and Official Kevin Gilbert page. Take a
sneak peak at work in progress...
   * The Unofficial Toy Matinee/3rd Matinee Page

I have it on good authority that there will be an official PRA page up
sometime in the future. As soon as I know it's up I'll provide a link to it
here!

Gilbert also has a tune on the upcoming Gentle Giant Tribute CD which
is mainly cover tunes done by fans from the mailing list (myself
included). His tune was an original, tho, a vocal fugue in the style
of Gentle Giant called "Suit Canon - Fugue of the A&R Staff". Very
funny and well executed. It is about this "Johnny Virgil" character
    mentioned in the previous note.

I spoke to Dan Schwartz yesterday, after seeing this note about Kevin's
death. He seemed pretty upset about it, obviously, but I guess they
hadn't been in close contact for awhile.

Btw, the Tuesday Night Music Club album project had already fallen
apart, even before this; too bad.
