3194.0. "PA question." by CHEFS::BRIGGS_R (they use computers don't they) Mon Apr 29 1996 03:30

Can't think of a more appropriate conference for this so here goes...

The band I play in has recently acquired a replacement PA. Its a Laney
(UK built I think). We have a MicroVerb III in the effects loop to use
instead of the PA's reverb. We only use the PA for vocals.

My question is why do the effects not appear on the monitors? The monitors
are fed from a monitor socket. Is there some logical reason for this or
do we have a fault? Sixth sense tells me there's some logical reason.

3194.1Monitors are usually dry sends..ASABET::pelkey.ogo.dec.com::pelkeyprofessional hombreMon Apr 29 1996 08:2430
Most monitor sends are dry, (as in no effects)

As far as logical reason, well, I'm not sure there
is one. I think everyones preference would be to get
a little grease and delay on the monitors, but i think
in working situation, the less 'stuff' on the vocals
the easier it is to hear em and prevent feedback.

But, basiccally, there are ways of getting some effects
to your monitors, and a lot of this depends on your mixing
console, and what sort of sends you may have.

If your board has multiple sub-outs, (like sub1, sub2,)
you could in essence send sub1 to your mains, and sub2 to your
monitors (this ofcourse means that you're not using the
monitor sends, and loose individual monitor control over
each chanell you need the monitors on (Primarily Vocals)...

Anyways, both of the sub-outs (if you have em) should allow
the effects loop in to the singnal..

But if you only have a main out and a monitor out,
.... you'd have to get creative..

Someone who's familiar with the mixer your using may be
able to offer some more help...

Gents:

Another way around this that would allow you to still use the monitor send
would be to patch the other channel of the MVIII between the monitor out
jack and the monitor power amp. The Alesis is a stereo device, and I'm
assuming that your only using one side (channel) of it.

Thanks for the responses. The last point is very interesting. I never
thought of that. Must give it a go.
