    Hi...

I have been cruising this notesfile for awhile. I love music
and especially the guitar. I was just learning to play about
4 months ago when I sprained my thumb very badly. I am trying to
get motivated to pick it up again and start up lessons again.
I need an amplifier for my gutiar and I am also looking for a
decent acoustic for a beginner. Any suggestions please let me know.

    thanks
    Lynne

DIR/TITLE=ACOUST should locate some additional notes on
    buying your first acoustic.

My first recommendation is to find an experienced player to help
    you make your selection.

Outside of that, if your budget is under $250, just try to find
anything that plays reasonably well. Some brand names to look for
include Yamaha, Sigma, Epiphone, Jasmine, Washburn and Fender.
Note that quality varies widely on the low-end of all of these
    brands.

If you can afford to spend more than $250, I'd recommend you buy
an instrument with a solid (as opposed to laminated) top. You can
tell if the top is solid by looking at the sound hole. If you can't
see the wood grain going through the top along the sound hole, it
    probably is laminated.

In the $250-$500 range, I'd look for Yamaha, lower-end Takamine,
Seagull (the SM-6 is a great guitar for the money), or Alvarez.
And some of Fender's current models in this range are pretty good
too (they are actually made by Yamaha).

Above $500, I'd recommend the Martin D-1 or 000-1, the Taylor 410 or
412, or guitars by Guild, Alvarez-Yairi, or Takamine.

Used is a good way to go, particularly if you can get someone
    knowledgeable to help you out.

Jim says it well...

I like Alvarez for your basic $300 dollar acoutics.
They seem a bit ahead of other makers acoustics
around the same price..

I don't think you'll find too many acoustics
around $200 - $250 (new) with solid tops but if
you happen on one, defintely consider that one
vs. a laminated top... The sound will be much
better.. Solid tops usually start at around
$400/450...

What are you looking for amp wise ?

(- What kind of electric you using, what sort of
music you interested in???)

Small amps for practicing can be had from anywhere
from $125/150 used, and $200/399 new..) a lot
depends on what you're looking to amplify..

If you have access to the Want Adds weekly, there's
usually about 3 or 4 million to choose from in
there.

good luck, hope you get back into it..
