| Quine made a name for himself as an early member of Richard Hell and
the Voidoids; "Blank Generation" is the definitive Richard Hell
recording and I'm pretty sure Quine is on that one. I've seen this
as a bargain CD recently too. There are also some good live sides of
Quine with this band floating around, usually cassette tape only.
ROIR records (independent mail-order distributor, check the classified
sections of music mags) is a good source for these.
Richard Lloyd and Tom Verlaine were the two guitarists for the band
Television, one of the seminal bands of the NY punk scene (along with
the Voidoids for that matter) and probably the best "guitar" band of
the bunch. "Marquee Moon", the band's second recording, is considered
a masterpiece. Verliane was sort of the leader of the band and even
considered by many the better guitarist. Together they had a dense,
complex style that did interesting things with the two-guitar format.
Definitely recommended.
Btw, does Sweet do any of his own guitar work? I got the idea he was a
pretty decent guitarist himself.

I think Sweet does some of the rhythm parts.
I believe he was also a studio bass player for before
getting going as a leader/writer.
Sounds like the prior work of Quine/LLoyd was harder
than what Sweet does now. But the solo breaks on "100%
Fun" show that Sweet is a guitar-head! Great tones.

He certainly plays the rhythym parts live, or at least used two. When
I saw him it was just Sweet and Lloyd on guitars.
If you go to see him live, make sure you bring your earplugs. He likes
to run the guitar amps at ear-splitting levels (which is why I'll never
go see him live again).

| I was thumbing through the latest GP and came across a small article on
Ivan Julian. Ivan was another guitarist with the original Voidoids.
Currently he's on tour with (guess who?)... Matthew Sweet. The article
also mentions Quine and Lloyd. Guess Sweet has a thing for that
"downtown" sound.
Btw, Robert Quine turns 53 this month and he's still out there making
some serious noise. God bless 'im.
