3086.0. "John Lee Hooker" by BARSTR::DAGG () Thu May 25 1995 08:25

I listened to "The Healer", which has
John Lee Hooker with Carlos Santana, Bonnie Rait and
others. I think its pretty recent, and John Lee sounds
great. Especially his singing. Not bad for a guy
whose recordings date back to 1948!

I also found this old (1960) CD with him and
Sam Jones (bass) and Louis Hayes (drums)
originally on Riverside. Had to have that
one. Too bad the cover is just CD size, 'cause
its one of those great blue-tinted pictures (of
him holding a _Goya_ guitar) like they used on many
Blue Note records. That would make a cool poster.

Anybody recommend some favorite recordings? I'd
probably like the later more electrified stuff.

Blues da healer....blue blue....Blues da healer....
Great tune!! Santana really makes ol' John Lee groove on that one.

John Lee's Ultamate Collection is great. It's got a mix of old
material (some acoustic, some electric). There is a live tune
on it with Bonny Rait guesting on slide guitar and vocals that
    cooks.

I've said it before and I'l say it again, if you're unfamiliar
with John Hiatt check out any of his last 5 disks. Also Check
out Sonny Landreth's "Outward Bound" and "South of I10". I also
like most of the newer stuff from Little Feat. "Let it Roll",
and "Shake me up" are both great.

    RE: John Hiatt.

I used to have Riding with the King, and I
liked it. Sounds like the new ones are good
    too!

Riding with the King is an older album, and is not up to speed
with his latest stuff. I have some of his earlier stuff and I
never listen to it. It just doesn't grab me.

There is a John Hiatt Note in here somewhere. Check it out
    for some suggested listening.

If you want to buy one album to give you a kind of *sampler* of
his better stuff, get the Live Album. (John Hiatt comes alive
at Budakan). I see it at discount prices (~$10.99). The lead
guitarist on this disk is okay, but he's no Ry Cooder or Sonny
Landreth. Nonetheless, it's a great disk, showcasing some of
    Hiatt's best tunes.
