3041.0. "Worcester music stores???" by ASDG::FAY () Fri Feb 17 1995 09:12

    	I will be buying a guitar soon and I was wondering if anyone
    	had any dealings (good or bad) with the music stores in Worcester.
    	I'm looking for an acoustic 6 string, that won't put a hole in
    	my pocketbook. Used or new makes no difference to me (should it?).
    	I am just starting out and I don't want to be taken advantage of.
    	There have been many good notes about stores in Boston, but I
    	would like to avoid going in to the city, to shop. Let me know
    	your experiences soon! I am really itching to get started.

    	Thanks
    	Deb

3041.1how much do you want to spend?BIGQ::DCLARKson of Sam-I-AmFri Feb 17 1995 09:507
    If you don't want to spend a ton of money, look in the Want
    Advertiser. You can pick up a decent used acoustic for $100-150.
    If you know somebody who plays they can help you with what
    to look out for. MacDuff's in Shrewsbury usually has a lot of
    used stuff (some of it is junk!).

    Well I really want to spend between $100-150. Closer to $100..
    I stopped in MacDuff's the other nite and they didn't have very much.
    They said they were getting in some guitars next Wed. I can't recall
    the brand name of them, but I believe it began with a V, and they said
    the price was around $129. I am mainly looking to but from a store, so
    I can put it on a credit card, (waiting for tax return). I also stopped
    in Daddy's just up the street...I hung around for ~10 min. and couldn't
    get anyone to help me so I won't be going back there. I plan on hitting
    the yellow pages and looking in Worcester tonite, I am just wary of
    some of the stores based on the notes I have read in here,
    unfortunately most of the notes are over 5 yrs. old...

3041.4Good stuff cheapSUBPAC::CHANISFri Feb 17 1995 14:485
    Gordon's Music on Main St. in Worcester has a fair selection of low-end
    to midrange priced acoustic guitars.... quite a few Washburns that I've
    tried were of good quality for ~$150, but all prices are negotiable.

    Good Luck, Jim

   Samick makes a decent acoustic for the money. Don't know if they're
   exactly in your range, but you might keep an eye out for them. (Actually,
   they make decent "everything" for the money, from what I've seen.)

   -- Sam (no, they don't pay me a comission... :-))

3041.6Finally...ASDG::FAYMon Feb 20 1995 12:1723
    Well I'm sure everyone is curious as to what I bought. I had some
    really good suggestions...I began here in Hudson at B...(er something)
    They had 1 gutiar for $150, said it was new but it looked like a demo
    scratches and scuffs all over it. I then headed in to Worcester.
    Kurlan's had a good selection and the staff was extremely helpful and
    actually gave me a lot of good info. They had a Samick for $129 it was
    nice but I was just begining my search so I kept going. I then went to
    Union Music, which had a real good selection and a very generous price
    guarantee. I saw an Oscar Schmidt there that I liked, again for $129
    (the lowest price guitars were $129 everywhere!) I the went to Gordons
    and then E.U. Wurlitizers pretty much the same thing as the rest. I
    wound up going back to Union Music and got the Oscar Schmidt, with the
    store price policy and the fact that the Oscar Schmidt came with a 5yr.
    warranty, I decided to get it there. None of the stores I went to had
    any lower priced used guitars, and they wouldn't budge on the price for
    the $129 guitars. However, so far I am pleased with it and I have been
    making excellent progress learning to play. If anyone has any feedback
    on my choice I would like to hear it pro or con...

    P.S. I don't know if this is a good "deal" but Union had Washburn
    D-25's on sale for $195 'till the end of the month...
