Check out http://www.tcd.net/~abel to see the most revolutionary electric guitar
in the industry. The Abel Axe is precision machined from solid aluminum giving
it the best sound and sustain of any guitar in the industry. Once you see it,
you will have to have one.

Sure it's an advertisement. I just thought it was worth taking a look at
picture of the guitar on their home page.

The guitar has a Strat-shaped body, with about 50 half-dollar-sized holes
drilled in it. Think "Swiss cheese."

Kurzweil proudly announces the establishment of a World Wide Web site.
We will be starting out quite simple but will be adding to it over the
    next several months.

Much of the material available there is also available here on
Compuserv, so you might not need to visit that often. However, there
are thing we can offer there which simply aren't practical within this
forum, so you will want to check it out if you have WWW access.

The following is from the press release about the opening of the site:

Music and professional audio industry Web service provider MusicPro is
pleased to announce the opening of a new Web presence for its client,
KURZWEIL MUSIC SYSTEMS. Kurzweil's introductory Home Page is available
    at:

		http://www.musicpro.com/musicpro/Kurzweil.html

KURZWEIL is widely regarded as one of the foremost manufacturers of
electronic musical instruments - MIDI samplers and synthesizers - and
Kurzweil instruments are the choice of top musicians from Kenny Rogers
to Pink Floyd. The Kurzweil K2000 series won the coveted TEC award in
1993, and the company has recently introduced the new K2500 series.

KURZWEIL's new Web presence will include background material on the
company, latest product announcements and electronic brochures, for
both home and professional products. Future plans for the site include
an FTP area for sounds, programs and utilities; brochures in Acrobat
PDF format; feedback and support lines; and an on-line magazine for
    Kurzweil owners.

For more information on Kurzweil, contact [email protected], or visit

    Very interesting. And I quote:

"Many of us are not working professional musicians today, but music
played an important and vital part of our earlier years. Owning the
finest instruments of our recent past can rekindle an interest and
passion in music and the arts. Virtuoso Vintage Guitars can help
you realize the dream of owning the instrument you seek."

Yup, aiming straight for that lucrative middle-age crisis market wouldn't
you say. The prices on most of the items I saw listed were astronomical,
even by vintage guitar standards, but you do get a nice color photo and
    a nifty paragraph description on-line.

Actually, the prices Larry listed are realistic for those instruments,
especially if they are in good condition. These prices may seem ungodly
high, but the truth is the instruments are worth even more in Japan.
At the last Dallas Guitar Show, Japanese buyers were scooping up
Vintage instruments so fast, they literally cleaned the place out in
a few hours time. They worked in teams with walkie-talkies and made
collective decisions on what to offer for a given instrument. A Strat
worth $10k in the US is worth at least $15-$20k in Japan, so they still
have a profit margin even if they pay top US dollars.

The HD strat is way overpiced IMHO since it is a new guitar. You would
be hard-pressed to resell one of these for even 1/2 this price.

    Mark
3033.27RICKS::CALCAGNImore zip stupid juiceWed Jun 21 1995 09:5712
I dunno Mark. If you thumb through the pages of Vintage Guitar, you
can usually find clean 50's Strats for much less than the prices posted
here. At least that was the case last time I was paying attention to
    these.  And even those prices are to be taken with a grain of salt;
asking price for a vintage Strat is usually like sticker price on
    a new car.

Virtuoso seems to be intentionally cultivating a high end image here,
geared toward those for whom money is no object and in fact for whom
a high price is actually sort of an incentive (the "I paid so much it
    must be good" crowd).

> imagine how much they're asking for some of the Martin acoustics

I'm particularly fond of the 1941 Martin D45:

"since the pre war D45's that have recently sold in the $125,000.00
range have had major repair work done such as neck sets, replaced
bridges and bridge plates, repaired tops or backs, etc. this prime
example of the pre war D45 is priced considerably higher."

3033.30Huh!MILKWY::JACQUESVintage taste, reissue budgetWed Jun 21 1995 13:2511
$125,000.00? Are you sure you didn't add an extra zero in there?
    I think $12,500.00 is more realistic for a pre-war D45. But then
again, I don't trade in these instruments so nothing would surprise
    me.

A friend of mine just bought a 1939 D18 which needs some repair
to the top and side. He paid $800 for it. I think he got a pretty
good deal, but the repair needed is pretty extensive. I wouldn't
    attempt it myself!

at their end. The zeros and commas are exactly as they were in the text.
3033.32Someone will pay it... GANTRY::ALLBERYJimWed Jun 21 1995 14:4117
$125,000 seems a bit high, but Martin only made something
    like 30-40 D-45s before production was suspended. A pre-war
D-28 (much less fancy and rare) in good condition can fetch
more than $12,500.00, so $125,000.00 for the D-45 is not out
    of the question.

In the vintage market $800, for '39 D18 is probably a steal,
    even with repairs required.

Of couse you can by a brand new D16 for under $1200. You'll
get a lifetime warranty, better quality tuners. Same design,
same bracing, similiar woods (although current the new guitars
have sitka spruce instead of Appalacian spruce for the top,
and I think pre-war D18s may have ebony fretboards instead of
    rosewood), just not 50-year-old wood...

have what I was looking for, but could custom make them. I said ok,
they said it would take 6-8 months, I still said "ok" -- after a year
later, SD was blowing me off without ANY status whatsoever on my
    "order".

I'm very happy with the EMGs -- they fill the void left from the

The guitar - known primarily for jazz, but was a big studio player
during the sixties & seventies. In the LA studio circuit, HR was a
first call status meaning he was the guy who got called first for
any studio work. He's played on over 50000 recordings by various
artists. There's no comparisons to be made. He has recorded several
albums of his own, and authored several guitar method books. He was one
of the co-founders of the Guitar Institute (GIT) in California and also
used to write the Jazz Improvisation column in Guitar Player magazine.

Some facts from the Web page:

     - He was known as the fifth Monkey; he played on nearly every tune
for the 1960's sensations the Monkees

     - Played the guitar in the Twilight Zone theme

     - Played the Guitar in the Munsters Theme song, I Dream of Jeannie

No kidding? I'd never have imagined any of this. I mean, the Guitar
Player magazine column always had a footnote that mentioned that HR was
probably the most widely-used session guitarist in history, but I still
to tend to pigeonhole him as "a jazz guy".

    Obviously not true.

If the list is generated on the fly, why won't deleting your notes
work? You might have to ask the moderators to delete them if you
    have changed nodes.

But then, it will diminish the value if Notes if alot of old
notes suddenly disappear. For example, there would be a great
disturbance in the force if Jay Tashjian's notes were to go
    *poof*.

What I think happens is the program keeps a running count (i.e., database
file) and just adds to it using a /SINCE=TODAY. It would be too great of
a batch job to re-run every DEC conference every night from its
creation date. Look at the dates at the top of the web site - it's run
    daily.

I went back to some conferences I moderate and checked some replies I
deleted. If I consolidated a topic so that there is no blank replies,
the tool then points to someone else's reply and still thinks I wrote
it. Follow the links for your email address or the notes and you will
see what I mean. It tracks down to the conference level.
