3028.0. "ERIC GALES BAND" by POLAR::KFICZERE () Fri Jan 13 1995 13:13

Anybody familiar with a SMOKIN' young guitar player named Eric
Gales? I'm interested in what kind of rig he uses. To my ears, it sure
sounds like he's playing through Marshall gear, but I read somewhere
that he and his band are endorsed by Fender (Fender's Frontline I
think) and that he plays Fender gear exclusively.
I was also wondering if anyone has seen him...LIVE! This kid is
pretty amazing, cool chops, SUPER tone, and speed that I'd die for.

Also, I haven't heard his first release, any comments?

I have it, and I don't think his speed is anything to write home
about ... but it is a very good guitar-oriented album.

Not sure about the gear ... but I can check the liner notes and
at least give you the maker on the stuff.

Idunno, I do have his second release and this kids fingers are on
fire! If you think that he's not that fast, you must really kick a$$.

Do you think I could get your autograph???

3028.3Whom do you regard to be "fast"DREGS::BLICKSTEINdbFri Jan 13 1995 16:5618
    Kevin,

Could you give us examples of other well-known guitarists who you
    think are "fast"?

A lot of people are really out-of-touch with the "state of the art"
in playing today. Three separate people have told me they thought
Eric ("Slowhand") Clapton was fast. Although Clapton is a "great"
player, he is most certainly not "fast" by today's standards.

What I've learned is that a lot of people, particularly people not into
the more technically oriented genres (prog rock, heavy metal, speed
metal, etc.) really don't have a clue as to what "fast" means these
    days.

    	No autographs ... sorry. 8^)

    	I never said I was fast ... heck, I don't even play guitar. I
just listen to ALOT of it, and although fast is a relative term,
there is a dividing line there somewhere.

If you want to hear the fastest guitar solo that exists, as far
as I know, listen to the song "Machine Gun Eddie" on Nitro's
"O.F.R." album. There is none faster. There are quite a few
that are much better, though, as long as you don't automatically
    	associate fast with good.

And now you have me wondering whether I have the 1st or 2nd al-
bum. What are the titles? I think I have the one with "Trouble"
in the title ... sounds familiar for some reason.

GTI, the second album (the one I have) has some really amazing work
on it,for that style of playing of course.I honestly can not get that
title to come to mind right now,but some of the tracks are :

    		Temple of deliverence
    		Misty
    		She's so heavy (Beatles cover...Interesting)
    		Bang that bell

And a bunch more(I think it's actually called Temple of
Deliverence). Anyways, as for this fastest issue that seemed to come
out of nowhere, I'm not really that much of speed freak. I really enjoy
listening/playing to blues oriented stuff. If you've ever heard Johnny
Winters Live album with Rick Derringer, that sort of style really
knocks me out. The fast stuff that I guess I'm refering to are those
BLISTERING leads based around pentatonic scales that seem to just never
stop. I'm a big Hendrix and SRV fan so that Gales kid really blew me
    away. He's just so fluid...Scary.
I don't mean to be nieve, but who's this NITRO chracter?

I believe I have the 1st one, then. Those songs don't sound
    	familiar to me.

Nitro is a 3- or 4-piece metal band headed by Jim Gillette on
vocals [who has amazing range, but is just as horrible to listen
to as Mariah Carey] and Michelangelo [no relation to the painter
8^)] on guitar. Michelangelo is LIGHTNING fast, but gets very
boring very fast since all his solos start to sound the same
    	after a few songs.

Their 2nd album had a cover of Nugent's "Cat Scratch Fever" that
Gillette ruined since he had to add "embellishments" to show off
    	his vocal range.

    album.thanks for the review though.
Getting back to that fret demon we were yakin' about.....
Yeah,I'd like to hear a little more on that first CD. Apperently
they've grown quite a bit in their song writing, not that they are all
that great at it with this release, but they sure get done what they
set out to do.I think any fool could figure out that they're just a
medium for this kid to WAIL...

Eric Gales seems to be using a stock Fender SRV Signature Strat whenever
I see him; that may be where the Fender endorsement comes from.

These guys are all great players but you'll have to take my word for it
that you can't look to the blues to get any notion of where the state
of the art is with regard to speed. It's just not what the blues
    is about.

If you were blown away by Eric Gales speed, and are interested to see
what the state of the art is in speed technique, there's a long list of
people you should check out outside of the blues genre.

I like blues AND I metal/progressive. I play in two bands: one largely
R&B one entirely progressive/metal. In blues the emotion comes from
phrasing and dynamics (largely). In other genres speed is used to
generate energy/excitement/adrenaline (i.e. "emotion", although blues
purists often don't seem to view it that way).

I hear a faint ringing in my ear, but can't place the name. Give me
another hint. I found your E-mail address but the message I sent you
was Returned-to-Sender. I'll try again today. So who's in this band?
When are you going to come jam with Davin, Devin, Mike and myself
(remember I'm doing the "drum thing" now), We suck (me anyway) but have
fun, nobody argues, its quite unique. Give me a call @dtn 640-7236.

P.S. Mikes Bandmaster and 2x12 Fender cab are at my place all the time
(he's got a SuperAmp now as well) it sounds great, I'd like to hear you
avec Strat on it. One other thing, Mike wants to sell his Strat if you
know anyone whos interested, he's into Les Pauls this week. Oh ya,
Devin is looking for a cheap bass, he's got a Carvin 100w head and
    Peavy 2x12 cab.

"Progressive" is one of those terms that nobody can agree on. There
was even a long string of letters to Keyboard magazine over the span
of about 5 months as to what constituted "progressive" music.

But since you asked "what do YOU consider 'prog metal'?"...

Truth is, I'm not all that familiar with the heavy metal side of
    progressive rock.

One band I know without a doubt that falls into that category is
Dream Theater. Their "Images and Words" album is IMHO, the very
best album to come out in the last decade.

One band I would NOT call "progressive" is Pearl Jam, although note
that all new forms of music (including "Seattle" which is how I
categorize PJ) are progressive in that they are... "new".

> Another scary point is that I'm currently involved in an R&b

Interesting coincidence. Me too, I have two bands, one that does
mostly R&B, the other is almost entirely progressive rock.
