Here's a note about probably an obscure group: Five Style (sp?) - lately WZBC has been playing a guitar based instrumental by this group. Its only released as far as I can tell on 7 inch on Subpop records. Sounds pretty good to me, but I'm not gonna go out and by a turn table just to listen to it! Anyone else heard of this band or know anything about them? Dave

I picked up the new one from 5 Style. For me its the antidote to the Hellecasters. I had thought Duke Levine would fit that bill, but "Country Soul" doesn't really grab me. 5 style is all instrumental, guitar/bass/keys/drums. Sounds like they've listened to alot of P-Funk and Sly Stone, but live among the grunge in Seattle. Its pretty funky, and _not_ slick at all. Probably the most interesting (besides the tasty funk guitar) is the keyboards, which are far back in the mix and sound like things from the 70s found at yard sales. It lists no recording studio, so maybe they did it in their basement. Since the first track has this unbelievable high pitch feedback whenever the guitar is up its clear they didn't spend much time getting the recording right. Endearing imperfection.
