3009.0. "QUATERFLASH TUNING ?" by TLSE01::CAMILOTTE () Thu Dec 15 1994 06:51

    Does anybody know how to play the solo part of a hit called "swallow
    my tears" from the group QUATERFLASH (about 10 years ago), it's now
    on CD.

    Such a great 'nasal' sound... if I remember, in the video, it was a
    black Telecaster with rosewood touch (brown) and a third pick-up
    between the two others, slanted in the opposite direction of the
    treble one... (looked fine).

    I purchased a Fender Telecaster, '52 reissue, blonde, it's my favorite
    now (I used to be fond of Stratocasters before, I had 3 of them).

    The question is : it seems that near the end of the solo, the phrase
    is made with natural harmonics (minor pentatonic of B).

    I cannot find on the neck all the harmonics, nor in standard tuning,
    neither in Open G ("a la" Keith Richard).

    Any idea ? perhaps it's simply "re-re"/overdub with different
    guitars...

    Thanks from a french guitarist (Toulouse)

    The tune is called "Harden My Heart".

    It's been awhile since I've played it, but I seem to remeber that the
    harmonics are not played on open strings.

Actually, back when these guys were hot, I was in a band
that did 3 or 4 of there songs.... From what I recall,
for that Album, the guy used a reverse cut (almost strat
style) Yamaha...

(In fact, I had one exactly like it for a few years....
can't recally the model number...)

can't help you on the solo, that copy has been flushed from
my long term memory banks... but Danny's right, there not
played on open strings. I seem to recall using a little but
of thumb skin to get the overtones...

standard tuning...
3009.8I like my new Flying VTLSE01::CAMILOTTEMon Dec 19 1994 03:5620
    Hi,

    I spent some times this week end to carefully listen to the solo part,
    with a guitar and I dare to say :

    - yes, it's standard tuning
    - no, I think it's really open strings harmonics (typical sound, not
    faked harmonics with the flesh of the thumb).

      In fact, it works perfectly well, because on the first four strings
      (E, B, G, D), 7th fret, you get every note of the "harmonic" run :

      <B, D, B>, <F#, A, F#>, <D, F#, D>, <F#, A, D, B> -> then fretted

      It's a kind of fast skip between strings (1st - 3rd / 2nd - 4th, and
      so on) on the same position, "a la Van Halen" (I don't speak of two
      hand tapping, I refer on VH II, where there is a lot of open strings
      harmonics)

      Thanks for the help, and perhaps somebody have another solution...

    A precision : the harmonics run works because the tune is in Bm
    (Bm / A / G mostly), the Bm pentatonic is : B, D, E, F#, A, and the
    open strings harmonics on the 7th fret are B, F#, D, A, E, B (from treble
    to bass), it's the fifth of each fundamental open string.
