3001.1 | Marantz? | GAVEL::DAGG | | Fri Nov 18 1994 06:28 | 7 |
| I think those are made by Marantz, and they have
built in speaker, half speed, and pitch adjust.
I'll bet Manny's in NYC will sell you one.

I'll bet my J&R music world catalog, that I just trashed, had one in
it.
Thanks for quick responce Dave, let's see if anyone else has some good
feedback for me.

| The Sony D5 and maybe the D6 also have pitch control.
I've used that Marantz, and it's a nice deck. The only complaint
I've heard from others regarding this deck is its durability - plastic
case instead of metal. Soundwise, it's a great deck.
All of the above can be found in the J+R Music World catalog.

| I think I've seen those advertised in the classified section of Guitar
Player magazine fairly regularly.
Be warned... the price is somewhat surprisingly high, although the ones
in GP also seem to come with a foot pedal contraption that allows you
to rewind it over a phrase without having to take your hands from the
guitar.
I use a sampler for that same purpose. Today's samplers also have
time compression and expansion which I'd imagine might allow you to
slow it down without halving the pitch. Don't know how well that
stuff works but I've been meaning to look into it.

3001.7 | I make this pitch every few months | NETCAD::HERTZBERG | History: Love it or Leave it! | Fri Nov 18 1994 10:13 | 26 |
| The problem is that we have a very short memory for sounds. Once a
riff is gone, we can't remember it and "play it back" inside our heads.
If we could, it would be alot easier to learn parts from records.
The "slow down without changing pitch" products are one way to help
around this problem.
What I like to point out, though, is that a CD player with A->B repeat
is amazingly good at helping learn riffs, too, if you're trying to
learn the riff off a CD.
You set a tight "loop" around the riff you're trying to learn, and the
riff gets (how shall I put this) "painted on your mind" over and over
again. For you EEs, think of how an oscilloscope helps you see
repetetive waveforms by drawing them over and over again. The result
is really amazing... in a very short time, you hear and remember the
riff, which is really the key to learning it.
I guess the moral is if you have a CD of what you're trying to learn
and a CD player with A->B repeat, try that first. Also, a musician who
sometimes cops riffs off records should never buy a CD player that
doesn't have A->B repeat. Unfortunately, these are hard to find since
it is a feature that only musicians really insist upon.

Hay Marc! thanks for the great idea. Now I've got to wait 4 hours
before I can rush home to see if I have that feature.
All this for "Heart full of soul" by the Yardbyrds. Got the begining
and lead stuff down, just can't figure out the chords?
Actually this will be a great tool for this winter.

Hay Hay Hay, GTI. The name Yardbird may be a lillte dated, but, the
group sure did develope some good talent thru the years.
I think GTI really loves the group, just trying to get a rise out of

OK, they had 1 song I think I might have liked.
But I don't recall any "good talent" coming from that band.
Just Jimmy Page, and "Jimmy Page" and "talent" shouldn't even
exist in the same language, never mind the same sentence.

| While the Marantz cassette deck with half speed and pitch adjust is
fairly expensive, Ibanez makes something similar (less rugged) that
retails for around $100. I think it's called the Rock & Play and not
only does it have the cassette deck with pitch adjust and half speed
mode, it also has a nifty little headphone amp you can plug your
electric guitar directly into which lets you play along with the tape.
You can get 'em from mail order places like Musician's Friend.

re: to all submitters
Well I picked up the Rock and Play, paid 120 for it at Daddy's. I had
my questions 'bout it on the way home, what the hell is this little
box going to do for me. Well, I can't believe the sound, through the
headset, supplied, I got, unbelievable. Started have some problems with
it and thought here we go another return but just pluged in the AC
adapter, supplied, and found it was just the battaries.
Thanks to all who supplied info on the Ibanez and those who shared the
chords.
Also to GTI for making things interesting.
