2972.0. "Mutron envelope filter?" by JUPITR::OCONNORS () Wed Sep 07 1994 12:28

     Hi everyone!

I'm trying to get a similiar sound that Jerry Garcia gets from
his setup, it's sort of an autowah type of effect. I have an old
"Guitar Player" magazine that says he uses a "Mutron envelope filter",
and also an "Mutron octave divider".

I'm pretty sure they don't make these anymore, could anyone suggest
any effects that might sound close to these....

     thanks
     Sean

Boss makes a good-sounding envelope filter (or they used to; I
couldn't find one a few months ago when I was looking). DOD makes
one that's just OK (but which I ended up buying). It's not very
responsive on the lower (EAD) strings and there's very little
margin for error in where you set the knobs as far as getting
a good sound. (If you don't set it right you'll sound more like
Bobby or maybe even worse than that :-) ). Somebody still makes
Octave pedals (they add an additional note an octave below the note
you're playing; check out the 5/8/77 Scarlet->Fire transition for
a wonderful example of this). Go into a music store and ask for one.
(I think Daddy's has both of these in stock).

No doubt you can find something modern that will suit your needs, but
if you still end up wanting that old Mutron sound, someone has just
re-issued the original Mutron III Envelope Follower. Me suspects they
be askin vintage (read big) bucks for this, but I have no more details
at this time (I can dig some up if you like).

Well, here are the 'details' (and I use that term loosely.)
Some company called N.Y.C. has been putting full-page ads in a few
of the vintage rags for the "New Mutron III". Quote: "Has all the
good vintage qualities of the past, completely redesigned to today's
    standards". And a phone# 718-768-2NYC
