| Peavey and Sunn sell small light systems that give you three or four
colors and some level of MIDI control. These are OK for solo/duo/trios
playing small rooms/stages. They are probably too small for a typical
rock club (but then many clubs have lights already).

| Thx Brian.. I haven't seen any of the peavey or sunn set-ups
but I do think I kow what they proabably are..
I'll start pokin around...
and... as our luck would have it, the clubs we've been in lately
have close to nothing... See we were working against the same
assumption 'they gotta have ''''something'''...' nadda.....

You can usually get a decent PA w/ soundman for under $100 per night
and lights w/operator for $50 per night. If you're only pulling in
$300 per night, you need to weigh the benefits of having a light
operator. You can go with a couple of stands, maybe 10 cans, set
a single scene and leave it that way all night. It ain't too
flashy, but if the club wants flashy, they've got to be willing to
shell out more than a piddly $300...

WHERE??? I'd love to find a deal like that.... the lowest for anything
half-way decent in the greater Boston area seems to be about $175-$200, and
it's usually much higher for something nice (ie. more than one monitor mix,
special mikes, etc.).
As far as lights go, my band needed something relatively nice looking, but
also cheap, light, and portable. We ended up grabbing some lights from the
WantAds that were perfect for us; they are four strip that hold three
floodlights each, have green, blue, red gels built in, and sit on the floor
or on top of cabinets. They all hook together in a daisy-chain to a footswitch,
easily controlled by a band member. It's more than enough for 95% of the clubs
we're playing at, and only cost us like $150 used!
(The larger clubs that require "real" lights shows either have them there,
or pay us enough so that we rent them.)

Here in the cultural Mecca of Colorado Springs...
We use a guy here in town that has killer PA gear and he runs it
for $90 per night for a three-nighter ($100 for 2 nights, $120 for 1)
We've worked with him for a while, so he knows all of our material
and how we want to sound. He sets it all up, tears it all down and
supplies all the mic's and stands, etc.
When I lived back east, I always played in bands that owned all the
PA and had a sound-person as part of the band (probably because the
rental prices are so outrageous!!!)
