2909.0. "Volume/Tone pot recommendations" by BLASTA::Pelkey (Life aint for the squeamish) Wed Mar 30 1994 08:58

Hi, I'm looking for some recomendations on Volume and Tone pots
for a telecaster.

I'm just not really happy with the ones on there now...

I have some literature from Torres Engineering that suggests using
500K pots in place of the 250K volume pots, and 1Meg pots in place
of 500K volume pots will allow greater output and tone due to less
loading on the pu. He goes on to say that with hot pu's, you could
use 1Meg or 2Meg pots. However, using 1Meg pots with weak pu's could
result in some harshness. Fender found this out when they used 1Meg
pots in Tele's with stock pu's.

I have 500K pots in my Strat as well as my Tele and I like the tone
of both guitars. If I had to change them, I'd just replace them with
    the same value.

It's your call since you're the only one who knows what you have in the
    guitar at this point.

    Good luck,

Actually, it's a brand new USA STandard Tele.

About a week old.... I don't like the 'feel' of the tone
pot, (stiff) and it's not altogether smooth...

The guy at ths store said no problem in replacing them, but
I think he'll throw anything he can find in there to shut
me up...

I wanted to specify what I wanted...

If I remember correctly, the Standard american tele actually uses two
pots for the tone control. They are ganged together on the same shaft.
This may be why it is stiffer. The A. S. T. has both a tone control,
and a sort of tone boost circuit. They are both controlled with the
same knob with a detent to demark where one ends and the other takes
    over.

The circuit that supports this is quite different than the traditional
tele circuit with a single pot tone control. If you want to put a
single pot in there, count on modifying the electronics a bit.

2909.6Hello... Consumer Affairs?WEDOIT::ABATELLIMon Apr 04 1994 14:3424
Hmmmm... are you sure it's the pot? Both of my Fenders need to be
adjusted in height so that the bottom of the knob doesn't drag/hit
on the pickguard (Strat), chrome plate (Tele). Maybe... just maybe
the knob is riding so low that the bottom of the knob is rubbing the
switch plate of your Tele? Yes? No? If it's a TBX model Tele, then
you deal with a double pot, and so what either way? If your dealer
said he'd have it replaced then have it replaced. Chances are pretty
good that if it's a double swag pot they'll replace it with one of
similar value. The question I have to you is this; do you like the tone
you're getting now? Then get a screwdriver, remove the 2 screws holding
your plate down, lift the loose switchplate carefully and rotate it
enough to read the value on the pot. Ask them to replace it with the
same value (ie; 500k ohms, or 250K ohms). At least that way you can be
sure of getting the same value pot (after you check it after the
replacement. They also may "spray" it and tell you they replaced it
when in fact they may not. Just another trick you may already be aware
    of.

    Food for thought.

    	Good luck!

Danny Gatton is a master at use of the tone control for Wah & organ
effects. For the tone pots he uses, he personally takes them apart
and modifies them in some secret way to make them spin better.
Danny Gatton has divulged this secret to John Sprung. John will make
this mod on the pot of your choice (for a price, of course).

John runs American guitar something-or-other. I think he is now
in VT. I can get you his phone if you're interested.

This I didn't realize!

There is a detent that you can feel, somewhere around mid
point as your turning it..

And by the way, it SEEMS to work ok.. (Response wise...)

About the only way to make them spin better is to file down the dia.
of the shaft and/or replace the lube with stuff that is thinner.

The TBX pot setup is a 1-Meg/250K stack usually with a resistor & cap.
