2905.0. "GTS strikes on a Fender Flame" by POBOX::PATLA (Elvis Sells DECpc's at Digital!) Sat Mar 19 1994 23:25

I went Pawn Shop hunting today and spotted a Fender Flame anyone
familiar with this guitar. Set up like a Les Paul but with a Wilkerson
Whammy and nice binding, pickups, and glued on neck.

Chewed the guy down to $350.00 would this guitar (which was flawless)
be worth $350?

Regards,
Pat

If you like the way it plays, looks, feels as well as the quality
of workmanship, then $350 is a good price (if it includes a decent
hardshell case). Resale value, of course, is another matter.

What Bill_K said......

if it's worth $350 to *you* then go for it; I'm a bad shopper in that
way...when I see a toy that I MUST have, I can justify the price
somehow....once I beat 'em down to one I can afford.

Fender Flames *were* a close cousin of the Robben Ford model;
these are dual cutaway semi-solids (tone chambers under the
hood), dual hummers with some sort of coil cut feature, and
usually have nice tops. If it's one of these, I'd say $350
is a nice deal.

On the other hand, I never saw one of these with a whammy,
so maybe there's a new version of the Fender Flame that
I know nothing about, in which case... never mind.

The only model shown in the current Fender catalogs is the Robben Ford,
so if it is a Flame, then it's from the late CBS days, and the whammy
is a retrofit. It still could be a good deal if you want a Les
Paul-like axe, but the quality of the whammy installation would affect
the price for me (i.e. was it done right or is the guitar beyond hope
forever?).

RE: FENDER FLAME...

JUST SO HAPPENS I OWN ONE!!!

Nice guitar,(paid $375 w/h.s.) Does compare to my '79 LP.
I bought it with very few miles on the neck and have put 7 years of
hard playing on it....

Well worth the money if you get the case and some strings thrown in as
well.

I bought it to give my shoulder a break. Do the 1979 Les Pauls all
weigh 80 pounds??

p.s. How many guitar players does it take to change a light bulb?

Seven.

One to change the bulb and six to stand around and say,

"I could do that."

<EADGBE>

I used to have an '81 Paul that weighed about that much. Used to
play it through a Twin (really). Still have back problems.
2905.7GOES11::HOUSEAren't you glad I asked?Thu Mar 24 1994 09:264
Yeah, I think all the Pauls (except the Thinline models) are brutally
heavy.
