Sounds like a Tak, or add a couple dollars more and it's a Guild.
I love my Guild and my Guild loves me.

Diddo on the Guild...
I've got an F-45E that I believe goes for under $1000 new (I bought
it used from a friend for a couple hundred). Nice action, beautiful
tone (both acoutstic and electric), very thin neck, cutaway for
diddling on those 20-something frets... definately a "keeper".

| 3 Cheers for the Guild!!!!
I own a Guild D-4, and while it may not come stock with built in
electronics, it's a great sounding guitar! (add a Thinline acoustic
pickup and you're all set!!)
Gotta love these Guilds! I played mine against a Martin "Shenandoah"
model and mine blew the Martin away, especially as far as action
goes. I only paid around $550 for it, too........

| You might also consider Alverez-Yairi. I have one from the
early 70s with rosewood back and sides. I recently had
it cleaned up and adjusted and it came out great. I don't
know about today's prices but this one was ~$250
used in '82, so even with inflation they might be
in your range.

I just purchased a Takamine EN-10C (acoustic/electric, cutaway,
natural finish) with hardcase for $760. What a beautiful sounding
and looking guitar. I love playing it through my small Peavey amp.
I spent hours comparing the Tak to other brands/models (like Guild)
and this guitar won hands down. This is only the second acoustic guitar
I have owned. My other is a fourteen year old Yamaha 12-string I've
had since college.

| How 'bout a Martin D1. The non-electric model lists for $999,
so it could be had for under $700. I'm sure the pickup adds
a couple hundred to the price (which pushes it outside your
range), but it still might be worth your consideration.
I've played a couple of D1s and was reasonably impressed with
them.

2898.8 | Martin D1 | CUSTOM::ALLBERY | Jim | Tue Mar 22 1994 14:31 | 10 |
| Martin's (relatively new) low-end "real" (made in the USA) Martin.
It's a D-sized guitar with a solid spruce top, 2-piece solid
mahogany back, and 3-ply mahogany sides.
Martin invested in some special CNC milling machinery to mass
produce the necks and neck blocks in an attempt to reduce costs.
The neck joint is different than Martin's traditional joint. If
I remember right, the bracing is new, too.

2898.9 | Decisions , Decisions ... | XSTACY::PHAYDEN |  Ne-Max-Zn-Dweebe | Tue Mar 29 1994 05:13 | 16 |
| Haven't bought yet, but I was looking at a Lowden ( They're cheaper here in
Ireland than the states ). The sound is great, the action's great , the
materials are first class i.e Rosewood back and sides and Maple top , 5 piece
neck. It's an O25 with a slight dinge in the varnish which accounts for the
reduced price. The Taks I've tried are very tempting but the fact that the
Lowdens are hand made by a select few craftsmen in a factory in the North of
Ireland gives them the edge IMHO. Still contemplating.
Regards,
Peter.
P.S
Can't find Guild anywhere that I've looked in Dublin. Mabe they don't have an
agent here in Ireland ?

2898.10 | Easy choice (IMHO) | CUSTOM::ALLBERY | Jim | Tue Mar 29 1994 08:49 | 9 |
| As far as I'm concerned, if you can get a Lowden at Tak prices, your
getting a GREAT bargain. Lowdens are $1600+ here (if I'm not
mistaken). I've tried out a couple of them, and the craftsmanship was
great. Also, the Lowden probably has solid wood for the back and
sides, while the Tak will have laminated back and sides (even the ones
with solid tops).
Good luck!

I agree - Lowden is the way to go under your circumstances.

2898.12 | Any more on Lowden??? | MPGS::ARVIN | | Tue Apr 26 1994 14:35 | 10 |
| I have played an Ovation for several years and have been reasonably
happy with (I bought it more for the action than the sound). Since my
playing ability has improved I've been considering up-grading to a
"better" sounding guitar. I thought Martin would be the way to go,
untill I played a Lowden. I'm thinking very seriously of buying this
guitar but would appreciate any more input you all might have.
Thanks,
Tracey
