| Most digital effects processor will color the sound and affect the headroom,
even if bypassed. If you have a bypass program built and the sound is still
not to your liking, the best workaround is to change your signal routing with
a simple switch box.
By the way, the DRX suffers from a transformer hum that can get downright
annoying over time. A simple fix (blessed by ART) is to place a 3 inch
length of bicycle tire tubing on top of the transformer. I tried it on mine
and and it works great. I was somewhat concerned with heat, but after 4 months
of operation it seems okay.

| Thanks for the info - I haven't noticed the mains hum prob', maybe not
apparent in the UK?
Thanks for the other info, looks like the rack might be short lived
then.....unless a split/direct return dry signal fixes the problem!!
Cheers

2876.3 | Distortion types | SPESHR::WAIBLE | | Thu Jan 20 1994 09:41 | 24 |
| I like what the racks can do but I'm still gigging using analog boxes
because they can be used in conjunciont with the overdirven sound built
into the amp. Apparently if there is any analog overdriven sound in
your signal you CANNOT and should not use the overdriven sound supply
digitally in the rack. you etiher have to use the overdriven sound with
the amp ( and then all the other rack effects are fine eq, compression
chrousing etc) or you have to set the amp to 'clean' and use the rack
distorition. I was pretty dissappointed when I learned about this
shortcoming and held off on getting a rack.
re-reeading this note it sounds confusing but the whole idea is
dont mix distortion types. you can use tube screamers and the like
wioth say the over driven sound of a mesa boogie or marshall
overdirve(infact it gives you more choices) but if you're going to use
the rack distortion set the amp to the clean channel. (and you can
switch back and forth from these scenarios with a switch box)
happy twanging,
Fred

| Cheers Fred - yes I think I followed that!
The ART Rack I'm using is time delay effects only and I rely on purely
the amp's overdriven sound, but the rack has a 'limiting' effect that
seems to spoil the overdriven sound making it a bit thinner & more
middly. I'm going to try looping back a dry feed from the preamp
direct to the power amp and also splitting the loop so that I also feed
the rack, that way I should at least get some of my original sound!
If that fails the the rack goes and it's back to good old analog stomp
boxes!

2876.5 | "X-15?" | JUPITR::NLAMOUREUX | STORMIN'NORMAN | Mon Feb 07 1994 07:15 | 25 |
| DUSTY RHODES?
Hey Dusty,
Maybe you can help me out on this?
I have the "ART", "SGX-2000" and the "X-15 ULTRAFOOT"
and havin' a bitch of a time tryin' to get the SOUNDS that I want!
I can program my "SGX" to sound great through head-
phones but when I put it through two amps, 50 ft. apart, in Stereo it
sound TOTALLY different!
Figure this is "STATE OF THE A.R.T." technology and
it's just a question of working with it?
Anyhow my real question is concerning the
footcontroller? Is there a SIMPLE process to initiate or recall a
preset from the footcontrollers or pads?
I've read the manaul a few times but it doesn't make
things clear & simple?
Can you help?........

Sorry Norm' but I don't use the X15, I use a Rolles midi pedal to
switch the ART patches - or rather I would if I was happy with the
sound of the unit....I'm losing hope myself and think I'll be trading
in the rack for something else - another guitar or something. I know
what you mean about the ART user guide - boy is that over-complicated
or what!?
Sounds like you might had a similar problem to me - once in the effects
loop the DRX2100 seems to remove a lot of the harmonics and top/bottom
frequencies from my (overdriven) sound. I can detect a similar change
in the clean sound too - in sterio with 2 amps (6 feet apart) but it
seems okay on headphones, but that could just be different
characteristics of the phones.
If you find an answer please let me know!!
Regards
Dusty
