2853.0. "Robben Ford's equipment?" by COMET::MARGASON () Wed Nov 10 1993 06:03

Robben Ford recently played in Colo. Spgs., CO at Colorado College.
Needless to say it was a great show! For those of you unfamiliar
with Robben, his style is a cross between Jeff Beck and Larry Carlton.
For quite some time he was Joni Mitchell's guitar player.

Does anyone know what kind of equipment he's using? I'd like to get
an equipment list...I know he uses Dumble Amps, but that's all I know.

You've come to the right place, my friend :-)

Robben's main axe for years has been a Fender Esprit Elite; this is a
dual cut solidbody with tone chambers, spruce top, 25.5" scale with ebony
board, two humbuckers with coil tap. Sort of a Fender experiment on a
Strat/ES-335 hybrid. These were originally made in the late 80's, built
in Japan, and didn't do well in the market. Since Robben started using
one, the custom shop started re-issuing these as the "Robben Ford"
signature model (for big bucks of course). Last time I saw him live, his
guitar tech said he was using an original Gibson PAF in the bridge and
a Duncan '59er in the neck. He seems to get his bread-and-butter tone
with both pickups on (middle switch position) and backing off the
volume on the neck pickup. Robben was a 335 man before hooking up with
the Fender and got pretty much that same tone out of those.

I think it was entered in here earlier, but when I saw Robben Ford
live a couple of years ago he was using a Howard Dumble Super Overdrive
amp. There were a couple of effects in a rack, I zeroed in on the
TC 2290 digital delay unit. Great tone!
