Hmmm, I know a David Wilcox who's really great, but I didn't think he was
from Canada (he lives in North Carolina currently). I wonder if it's the
same one? Do you know any album titles? What style of music is it?
The guy I'm thinking of is a whiz on acoustic guitar, and plays a lot
in strange tunings.

| Last I heard, he lived in New York City...
1st album....Night Watchman.......Cassette only.out of print.
Great music
2nd album....How did you find me here?
Better music
3rd Album....I don't remember the title.
Best
It's late and I'm going out of town so I must get home. I could write
an essay on Dave's stuff if I had the time. Probably the very best
songwriter I have ever heard. He started playing a guitar @ 18. Never
picked one up before that. He's now 31. I've seen him perform 7 times.
I try to play 6-7 of his pieces.....many more I'd love to learn but
can't figure out the tuning.....

That's the David Wilcox I've heard, although I last heard he lived
in Asheville, NC. Guess he gets around! :-)
I can't remember the name of his most recent album either (I don't
have it yet). I play three songs of off "How Did You Find Me Here",
although nowhere near as well as he does! :-)

"Eye of the Hurricane" is on "How Did You Find Me Here?".
It actually got some airplay on the local (Baltimore/DC)
alternative station for a while a few years ago. In fact,
that's how I got into David Wilcox. I remember that I had
to special order the album, though. Normal run-of-the-mill
record stores don't tend to carry stuff like that.

2844.6 | My buddy Stacey at Newbury Comics | WAYLAY::GORDON | New Wheels | Tue Nov 09 1993 12:18 | 10 |
| For any of you in the Nashua area, Newbury Comics carries it. Stacey,
the manager over there is into contemporary folk and she stocks a lot of
otherwise hard-to-find stuff. She will also special order anything she can
get if you ask.
I have no connection with Stacey or Newbury Comics other than as a
customer and I'll often ask Stacey for recommendations.

| Just for the record, there are TWO gentlemen who both go by the name
"David Wilcox":
The first is the guy from the 'southern' U.S. that all of the
replies have been talking about. I've heard him mentioned in some
guitar mags myself, but have yet to hear any of his stuff.
The second "David Wilcox", who the base noter was referring to, is
a Canadian guitarist from Toronto, who has been playing for at least 15
years. First he was in a band called the 'Teddy Bears', then he
went solo. He is absolutely immense on the bar and college circuit in
Ontario. His style is mostly electric blues/rock & slide guitar (imagine a
more mainstream Ry Cooder, with better vocal anunciation). He has several
albums out up here in Canada, all on EMI/Capitiol:
Out Of The Woods
My Eyes Keep Me In Trouble
Bad Reputation
Best Of ...
(the above were available on vinyl, and are still available on
cassette, I think)
Over 60 Minutes With David Wilcox
Breakfast At The Circus
'The Natural Edge' (I'm guessing at the title; this song's on it)
(these are available on cassette and CD, but the last one didn't sell
that great, so it might be hard to find)
Best bet: Over 60 minutes with ...
Why: It's got 'Bad Reputation' (the song mentioned in the base note),
and all the best stuff from the first three albums on it.
'Breakfast...' is also pretty good; the best tune is 'boogie' called
"Layin' Pipe", which is full of suggestive remarks about construction
work (in the great tradition of blues 'double entendre').
I've seen him a couple of times live, and he's incredible live.

I heard this a few days ago from Lale, but I hadn't found this note again
to put in a reply. Thanks for saving me the trouble! :-)
I think one of the two should be made to start going by
David {whatever his middle name is} Wilcox, just to prevent
confusion. :-)

Sounds like the American David Wilcox rather than the Canadian.
