2794.1 | Try Acton Music | MSE1::MULLER | | Sun Aug 29 1993 21:57 | 22 |
| You should check out Acton Music. They have a good selection of
Gibsons, Martins, Guilds, Epiphones, B.C. Rich, etc. They also carry
Kurzweil keyboards and a full line of Peavey sound gear and amps.
Prices are pretty good.
Getting there is easy. From Parker Street:
turn left from Digital's drive
turn left at the 2nd traffic light
take the right fork at the next light
proceed approx 2 miles until you come to a high bridge
(en route you will pass a Saab dealer on left)
just past the bridge you will see an blue building with a
steeple (former church) on the left - THAT'S IT!
bear left at the fork in front of the building as the
parking lot entrance is on the left side.
Have fun
P.S. - Everybody takes Visa...

2794.2 | A few places to check out | MILKWY::JACQUES | Vintage taste, reissue budget | Sun Aug 29 1993 22:09 | 16 |
| Acton Music is a short drive from Maynard. I've never been in the
store but they have a pretty good reputation. Mr. C's Music in
Marlboro is a little bit longer drive (20 min.) They have a nice
store and quite a bit of Fender and Gibson.
If you have time to shop around the Boston area, I would suggest
you check out Mr. Music (Allston), Cambridge Music (Cambridge),
Sandy's Music, and the Music Emporium. The Emporium is geared
more towards acoustic instruments. Most of these places specialize
in vintage instruments.
If you are looking for new stuff, it would help if you told us
specifically what brand you're looking for.

2794.3 | Why not try "DJM" in Nashua? No STATE tax!! | LUNER::ABATELLI | You're not from around here are U? | Mon Aug 30 1993 06:53 | 13 |
| Acton Music "prices" are alittle high (in my opinion) plus you'll need
to pay *state tax*. If you don't mind driving a little more... try
Daddy's Junky Music in Nashua, New Hampshire (no state tax). Take Rt. 2
to route 495 north to Rt. 3 north into New Hampshire (30 minutes from the
Parker Street facility) get off at exit #1 (Spitbrook Road), make a right
hand turn (at the light at the end of the exit) till you hit the "Daniel
Webster Highway" (Burger King, Exxon gas, and a furniture store will be on
the corner) and make a right hand turn at this light. Daddy's Junky Music
will be on the right side of the road (on the Daniel Webster Highway).
Have Fun!

Also, once in town pick up a copy of the Want Advertiser.
It costs $1.50 and is well worth it. It well help you understand
that prices for used equipment in stores. Plus, if you see some-
thing in there that you really want to check out, you could go to
a bank and get a cash advance on your Visa - it will work as easy
as flipping it to the sales person.
You would to better with a private sale.

2794.5 | 20% off what *I* paid ;-) | SUBSYS::GODIN | My other preamp is a Tri-Axis. | Mon Aug 30 1993 15:28 | 15 |
| If you're going fishing in the Want Advertiser (available just about
everywhere newspapers are sold) make sure you know something about the
piece you're considering. There's lots of stuff in there that's priced
based on what it used to cost new, a few years back. Some of the original
prices have no basis in reality anymore. Usually a real bargain will be
gone before the paper hits the stands, & the good stuff doesn't hang
around too long.
Another advantage of Daddy's JM is that they keep an on line listing of
what items are in each of their half a dozen or so stores, so if it's in
Connecticut, & you want to buy it in Nashua, you can have them move it
up for the demo & get to try it (&/or buy it) anywhere. It usually only
takes a day.

2794.6 | So Much Choice - Such a sort Life! | SEDEUC::MILLER_N | | Tue Aug 31 1993 05:51 | 17 |
| Wow!! THanks folks! What a response - I only put this up last thing
Friday - looks like I'll have a lot to keep me busy.
I don't have any real specifics in mind although a tasty Les Paul would
be nice - IF they are much cheaper than here? I also need a second
user Octopuss (Midi/Analog switch) and maybe an Alesis microverb.
Apart from that I am just keen to see what sort of prices are out there
and what sort of gear - the UK stores can be a bit limited!
I'm looking forward to my trip - should be interesting esp as it's my
first to the US (I've been to loadsa places but never the US)
May see some of you there!!

You'll have a good time here. Just remember a couple of things.
* Drive on the wrong side of the road. (However, since you will
be in the Boston area, this is moot. In Boston, left side, right
side and sidewalks all seem to be fair territory.)
* When someone waves to you with one finger, refer to the UK two
finger salute.
* Our cab drivers are just as bad as yours.
* Randy is a name and not an invite. However, this week Boston
will be receiveing thousands upon thousands of freshman college
woman. (So, Randy will probably turn out to be an invite at that.)
* Regional phrases to remember...
West coast - Totally cool dude.
South - Y'all come back now.
Central - I think the cat has webbed feet now.
East coast - Shut up.
Boston - Shut up, $#@% head.

I grabbed the WantAd on the way to work. Here are some examples you
can expect to see once you get here. I'm just providing enough
description here so you can get the idea of guitar/price. I'll add
more when needed. Remember, all the prices are flexible, even when
they say "firm" - (well, most times.)
I did not put the telephone numbers in as it must be some sort of
copyright ca-ca law issue. (But, you could call me, or just pick up
a copy for yourself.) Fender products, when Jap or Mexi, are noted
as such within the ad.
'62 Fender Strat reissue w/case $495.00
Gibson Explorer $450
'87 Strat reissue(62) $550
'54 Gibson Les Pual Gold $3600.00
Fender Strat w/case $450
Mint Gibson SG w/case $775
'80 Fender Strat, no case $225

'60 Les Paul Jr. $750

'63 Gibson SG Jr. $450 <-------------
1972 Les Paul Gold Top $750

Gibson Explorer $500
1972 Mosrite Semi-hollow $1350 (huh?)

'57 Strat Reissue $895 (3 months old)
Fender Strat USA $470
Gibson Les Paul Standard $850
'67 Gibson ES330 Semi-hollow w/case $500 <-----
'57 Gibson Les Paul T&V Jr. $1200 (What's that anyway?)
Gibson Flying V Limited Edition (354 of 400) $1500
There's some interesting stuff here. Bring a stack of money.
If the prices seem to be lower. Sell the car, come here and go
wacko buying every good deal you can (ala Tom T.) and sell them
off in the UK for a punts more.

2794.9 | Price discrepancies explained | SUBSYS::GODIN | My other preamp is a Tri-Axis. | Wed Sep 01 1993 10:44 | 30 |
| I believe the "Squire" Strats are made in Japan or Mexico, & hence much
less desirable than US made.
Sometimes the condition listed in the ads is different from what the
actual instrument is.
Some people don't know what they have, or even occasionally omit
key words like "copy".
Many of these ads are phoned in & what gets written up resembles what
the person *sounded* like on the phone, rather than what he was
actually saying. Typos are rampant.
Sometimes prices change *upwards* when you actually show up to buy.
Even if the ads don't say "no checks", make sure you have it in cash if
you really want it.
"WTF ?" is another piece of slang that you'll pick up when you get here
if you don't already know it. ;-)
There are definitely some bargains to be had out there if you know what
you're looking for.
Sometimes the prices listed make absolutely no sense, for no apparent
reason, other than brain damage.
Good luck.

2794.12 | THANKS FOR THE HELP CHAPS | SEDCAS::MILLER_N | | Mon Sep 13 1993 12:56 | 39 |
| Hi Folks
Well I got there and wow - what a city! I didn't have too much time
to spare unfortunately but did manage to get to 3 of the stores
recommended.
Acton Music was okay, a bit limited on the LP size which is what I was
particularly interested in but they did have a real good deal with LP
Studios at $595! Petty I wasn't after a Studio.
Daddies in Nashua was good with a fair range of stuff and pretty good
prices. Get directions too Fred.
I also got to Mr Music - went out there on the 'T', surrounded by sweet
young lassies from the University. I've never been so happy being
squashed into a trolley/carrage!
Mr Music had a great range of stuff - I tried a couple of LP's out, but
they weren't quite what I was after. They did have an LP Delux at $399
which seemed good value, it was a bit shabby but not too bad. In the
end though I'm sorry to say came away empty handed!
Basically there seemed to be good deals on the no-so-good conditioned
guitars, but the good conditioned ones (2nd hand) were same sort of
price as the UK, and being a bit of a perfectionist with guitars I
wasn't really sure if I could live with a slightly beat up one!
Anyway thanks for all the suggestions and the tips on Boston Speak -
some of which I understood, but I didn't understand "the cat's got
webbed feet!" Am I being naive here?
Sorry I didn't get to meet anyone, my time was really pushed...maybe
if/when I get over again I'll get to meet a few more of you folks.
Regards

Regional phrases; Central: The cat has webbed feet now.
The mid-west/central region of the United States have had
sever flooding for almost the entire summer - hence, "the
cat has webbed feet now."
Someone I work with was out there 3-4 weeks ago at his
parents place. On a Sunday night they had TWO INCHES OF
RAIN PER HOUR FOR FOUR HOURS STRAIGHT!!! Now that cats
are turning green and say "ribbet" when hungry.
Did you get a chance to look through a Want Advertiser?
It's a shame you didn't get a LP. Just think how jealous
your friends would have been.
Rick.

2794.14 | Short Lived Dream! | SEDEUC::MILLER_N | | Tue Oct 05 1993 12:36 | 17 |
| Thanks for the phrase clarification Rick.
I did see the WantAd but didn't get the time to make house calls, I
figured the more guitars in one place the better my chances of finding
the right one!
On return to work this week (I've been on holiday in France for 2) I
found that, despite achieving my personal and team goals last year and
therefore making the UK bonus, they have now (3 months after end of
year) changed the rules so that I won't get the team bonus - leaving me
about $12K out of pocket!! Apart from being highly unethical and
demotivating this has left me deep in it financially, so I guess the LP
wouldn't have lasted long anyway!
Cheers
A Depressed Dusty!
