2788.0. "Peavey Amps - what's the diff?" by MYOTT::DEVONICK () Fri Aug 20 1993 05:41

Hi,

Can some of you folks give me a few facts about the differences
between a Peavey Stereo Chorus (210) amp and a Classic Chorus (212) amp.

It seems that the 210 stereo chorus (new, $340.0) costs only slightly
less then a used, in excellent condition Classic 212 amp.

I know that one of the diff's is that the Stereo 210 has a digital delay
and Classic does not. But what's confusing me is that the Classic
is also a stereo amp as well. (why ain't it a Classic Stereo Chorus amp?)

If it makes any diff, the axe is a strat+.

Thanks.

    hey...

not sure i can answer any of your questions but i've been playing thru
a peavey with 2 12"s and the word Classic written in script across the
front for the last couple weeks. it's a pretty cool, not so little,
amp. it's also got something called "automix", a line in which enables
you to use the foot controllers to turn the reverb or phase on and off,
and also to switch between channels or combine channels.

is this the Classic 212 (two twelve inch speakers) that you're talking
about? i don't notice anything about stereo input however. and... the
amp has tubes and is circa 1976.

If this is the "Classic" that I'm thinking of, it's mono in (but has
more than one channel, I think), mono out, tube power & solid state
preamp. I've seen these in gray. What colos is the one you're looking
    at ?

FWIW, I played through the (ca. 1976) 4x10" model of this series, & was
    not impressed.

There's also a Peavey note in here somewhere that mentions them.

2788.3Is it a new classic or a classic classic?GANTRY::ALLBERYJimFri Aug 20 1993 12:5516
Peavey has used the classic moniker on at least four differ amp lines.

The "classic" mentioned in 2788.1 sounds like (as suggested in .2) the
late seventies classic that had a solid state pre-amp and a tube power
amp (two 6L6), and was rated at 50 watts RMS. It had two independent
preamps that could be selected and mixed via the "automix" foot
switches. It also had a built in phase shifter and reverb. Later
models replaced the phase shifter with a chorus effect, I think.
After that, I believe Peavey switched to an all solid state classic.
The current classic line are the psuedo-bassman "vintage"-style amps.
Interestingly enough, the original Peavey classic was also a (visual)
    bassman clone.

I'm not sure what the Classic 212 in .0 would be.

i checked the back of my current, borrowed, amp. it does indeed read
Classic 212 and was bought circa 1976 new. and... yup, there are
two tubes in the back. i didn't get their license plates though...

    RE -1:
    They're big ones right ?
    My guess is 6L6GC.
Possibly 6ca7 or 7027, but I doubt it.
Only 2 means you've got the solid state preamp model.
    Gray speaker cloth ?

RE -1: yeah... they are big ones. i didn't catch their number. i
did catch them glowing though:-). the speaker cloth is i believe a
combination of grey and black. nothing that really sticks out in my
mind and i've been looking at it alot lately. i'll have to check.

Peavey is using the Classic name on current issue all-solid-state
chorus amps.

The Classic Chorus differs from the Stereo Chorus first in speaker
size, the Classic is probably more powerful and I think the Classic
has nearly twice as many delay presets. I'll check my Peavey catalog.

The Classic Chorus in black tolex with green trim accents should
not be confused with the Classic 50 in pseudo-tweed.

Anyone own or test drive one of the new PV Blues Clssic amps? I'm
looking for a 1x12 all tube combo and I caught a specs sheet on the PV
home page on this thing. So far,I've compared the new Fender Blues
Deluxe to the PV Delta Blues (1x15) and liked them both--just not
enough to shell ot $700! I haven't seen them carried anywhere around so
I was wondering if they sound similar to the Delta? Fwiw, the Delta is
30w all tube where as the Blues classic is 50w all tube (and 1x15,I
    think).

2788.9doesn't Peavey compete on price?GAVEL::DAGGThu Feb 01 1996 14:1310

I've seen the Classic 30, 20 and Delta at Daddy's Music.
They sounded pretty good, but I noticed a couple weren't completely
working, i.e. feedback with the reverb on, excess hum,
etc. But as long as you make sure it works, and get
a good discount, seems like a good deal. I'd be curious
what you'd have to actually pay for a new Classic 30. I think
    they list around $400+?

Anyone out there own or test driven a PV Delta Blues amp. 30w,1x15"

    2. Crate VC30 $579
    3. Fender Blues Deluxe	$599
    4. Mesa Boogie Subway Blues $599

2788.12Add Marshall JTM30 to the list.MILKWY::JACQUESVintage taste, reissue budgetWed Apr 10 1996 10:2515
As I stated in the Marshall note, I picked up a (slightly) used
Marshall JTM30 before the holidays for my nephew for $250. The
amp is mint. The guy selling thought there was a major problem
with the amp, but it turns out the effects loop jacks were dirty
and were kicking the power amp in and out. I'd classify this as
    a major coup!

The amp has great tone. So much so that I started looking at
my Fender Deluxe Reverb in a whole differant light after hearing
the JTM30. The JTM30 is a bit louder than the Deluxe and obviously
more versatile. The clean sound reminds me of a good AC30. The
gain channel provides sweet distortion. I may eventually look for
    one for myself.

At $750+ (Can), it better have *great* tone... unfortunetly out of my
price range at the moment. I have heard good things about those little
suckers tho. I think the JTM60 was almost $1200!

2788.14I liked the PV Delta Blues!AWECIM::KELLYThu Apr 11 1996 15:0113
    Hi Kev,

I briefly test drove the Delta Blues (PV) a couple of weeks ago. It
was the first PV guitar amp that I really liked: thought it had a nice
rubbery clean tone, and you could dirty it up to one's liking. It
seemed *plenty* loud for the kinds of bands I play in. I drove it with
a stock Fender Tele and a Gibson L7C. Of those two guitars, the amp
seemed to be a better match to the Tele. The sound of the GIbson,
which is fat, when coupled with a fat sounding amp, made it a little
    too tubby, IMHO.

    Regards,
    Kelly
2788.15very cool combo!POLAR::KFICZEREThu Apr 11 1996 15:2510
Thanks Kelly. I have one on order from my local dealer. I have tried on
for a minute or two a while back and was quite impressed myself. I'm
deciding between it and the Fender Blues Deluxe now. I really love the
PV's dirty side but the Fender takes it for the clean end. I plan on
A/B-ing them together upon it's arrival. Now if I could find someone
who owns one for a review I'd be a happy man.

    Thanks again,

I would also vote for the Vintage Club 30. Even over the JTM30.
Both JTM30's that I heard had pretty bad tube ringing when cranked.

Sign me up for the VC30 endorsement also... I love mine... Great

I got a chance to play one at practice yesterday. The other guit player
in my band has one. No doubt it is loud and sound great...but better
suited for humbuckers in my opinion. His 335 wails thru that thing.
Huge tone. To me it sounds exactly like Claptons tone on the new blues
cd (From the Cradle),Awesome. My Strat+ Deluxe on the other hand, is
not so huge. Sounds pretty good, but not exactly what I'm looking for.
It sounds a bit "middy" for me. The gain on that amp is also
    screamin'.
I'm looking forward to that Delta Blues with the 1x15. I'll have to put
them side by each and compare.
