RE: Westminster to Nashua, I'd say going highway would be ~ 1 to 1.5
hr drive. Must be between 50 and 60 miles. I'd go Rt 2 East, 495 North,
Rt. 3 North. Back roads are shorter, but would save little time. Not sure
where (in Nashua) Blind Willie's is located. Hope this helps.

2736.7 | Directions to Blind Willey's | LUNER::DUBOIS_R | | Wed May 19 1993 14:47 | 16 |
| Blind Willey's is at 14B Rail Road Square this is at the corner of
Main St. and Canal St. there is a Dunkin Donuts at the corner Blind
Willey's is actualy on Canal st. just beside the D.D.
The easiest way to get there would be RT.3 to RT.101A. Take that in
to Nashua. When you come to a large intersection that has a large
statue that is Main St. Turn right at the bottom of the hill you
will see Dunkin Donuts on the left. Turn left there and park your
in front of Blind Willey's. No cover charge. Just bring your axe
you can plug into the house bands amps. The band doesn't use any
keyboard but they have one on stage for jammers. Drummers ofcourse
use the house band drummers kit.
If your a Deccie come introduce yourselves....two other Deccie's
are in the house band. Rob Woodburn on guitar and myself on bass.
Atleast I'm a Deccie till june 18th....I gut them TFSO'd blues.....

Gee, you guys really make me envious!
I'm working in Varese (Italy), but living in Milan which has a
population of some 3,000,000 people. The idea of organised blues jams
in clubs/pubs here is science-fiction!
My band recently broke up so, keen as ever, I immediately made out an
ad. and have since posted it in a local "secondhand" newspaper (twice),
in local music schools, a couple of music shops and at a local blues
club. Well, the first month is up and I haven't had one measly phone
call...and it's not as though the music scene is totally dead here,
although there are far too many HM bands for my liking.
Just for the record, the ad. (loosely translated) reads:
"Are you into the early Stones, Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Stax,
Motown?
GUITARIST, 31 years old, heavily into blues, R&B, soul, wishes to
join/form band in the Milan area..."
And yes, I did read the "How to get a new gig" note!!

Blues jam are American capitalism at its best. Isn't Italy a
socialist country? 8^) 8^)
OK, you figure that Sunday through Thursday are "off" nights for bars,
I mean they open up for drinking but seldom have entertainment. So
they offer $100-200 to a "house band" to show up with some gear and
open the doors to jammers, who will suck brewskis all night long while
waiting for their moment of glory. Some bars even charge a cover for
non-jammers! Anyway, it brings extra bodies in on a slow night with
little or no expense to the bar.
This explains the presence of blues jams in places like sunny Marlboro,
MA which has a music scene kinda like the Gobi desert.

This is a map from Rt2 , to Blind Willie's. There are really only
five major roads to take.
1. The road from Rt 2, past Whalom, to the end.
2. The road up to the gas station, (about 1/4 mile.)
3. Rt 13 from the gas station all the way to Rt 101.
(But ya gotta get thru Townsend's twisty roads.)
4. Rt 101 to Rt 101-A, (just one exit away.)
5. Rt 101-A will go right into the center of Nashua
and will end at a church/stop light/intersection.
Blind Willie's is about 100 yards away as the crow
flies.
Others can fill in the blanks here and there with better
detail.

Townsend center is tricky go straight thru the intersection,
then right in front of you will be a large old white house
that has some retail in it. Stay to the right. You are
basically skirting the town center commons. Then you get
to the orther side of the 2 acre common, and you stay to the
left. Directly outside of the center, the road bobs and
weaves so be careful. This is really a straight shot from
the gas station back aways, all the way to RT.101. It's
those damn New England roads that will screw you up.

The SD-1 - that's what I'm probably going to take to this jam.
Wait - maybe I better not. Because if I don't, and I say "it's
never been gigged" you'll know otherwise. If I don't take it,
I can make that claim.
db
p.s. Actually, now that I think of it, it was at one gig: the wedding
of our singer. She wanted to do a song that had a string quartet
and the SD-1 has a KILLER patch for that - like people were
looking at ME instead of the wedding action because they were
trying to figure out where the quartet was.
IMO that gig doesn't count.

| Is everybody sleeping in after last night!? Sheesh, I expected to see
a bazillion replies when I got in this morning.....
A short recap:
First, many thanx to the house band (what *is* the name, anyway?),
including Gonzo, Rob and Bob for sponsoring the event and working their
butts off all night so we could get our primeval urges worked out!
The attendees, that I remember (in order they showed up): Tom
Tesstagrossa, me, Dave Hickernell, Rick Oloughlin, Kevin McDonough,
Sakman Sakelaris, Fred Abatelli, a non DEC drummer named Kevin, and
another Deccie who is kinda new in here and I apologize for forgetting
your name! (Elfin?....is that close?)
I had to go first after the band warmed up and I wasn't! They hit me
with a decent paced shuffle first, and then a killer speed # on the 2nd
tune!! Ack! One more and I was done for my first turn....great time!
Tom T was next and impressed the crowd withhis really Smooooth voice
and some tasty lix on his new strat!
I think Kevin went next....he showed up with baby in tow (Brian, ya
shoulda come!) and could only stay for one tune, so he milked it for
all it was worth. The LP sounded great thru that Fender combo, and as
usual, Kevin ruled! Dave Hickernell held the baby while Kev played,
that child wouldn't trust anyone else that was there....8^)
This is starting to run together now, as it was getting past my
bedtime, but I think Sak and Dave Hickernell jammed together. The EBO
was DEEEEEP and Saks HM strat was SHARP! Sounded super, guys!
We could not shame Rick O into a stage appearance, but his company was
enjoyed and appreciated. He brought his new YamaGibson. Looks nice!
As the midnight hour approached Fred Abatelli showed up and wowed us
all with his '69 strat ( I can't wait until my strat looks like that!)
and his clean and tasty blooz style. He was gonna leave after his
turn, but I conned him into throwing a band together for one number
while the house band took a break. Me, Fred and Dave Hickernell took
the stage with Kevin, the Undeccie drummer and slapped together a
version of "Key to the Highway" that will go down as one my favorite
impromptu performances in my memory. I was smiling all the way home
after that one! We traded lix, matched lix, joined lix, took it down,
took it up and worked it out! Made my night, thanx to Fred, Dave and
Kevin!!!! (Fred sang it, by the way! |*})
I hope I haven't forgotten anyone. The comraderie was super, the
house band were gracious hosts and I'd say a good time was had by all.
Steve (looking forward to other versions of last night)

The drummer was Kevin Mara and he is a Deccie. So many faces and so
many names it's hard to remember.
It was great having Dave show up with his bass. It gave me and the
audience a break. Personally I felt I had the worst night of my life.
The time was great, the people were great, I personally was having a
bad night. Some nights you got it and other nights you don't. Well
last night was one of those bad ones.
Last note mentioned a cover....I wasn't aware of a cover charge. Sorry
about that, I had mentioned in my original note no cover. Must have
been a management change of plan.
Anyway' glad everyone could make. Remember tis is a weekly thing. So

It is impossible to recall any highlights as EVERYONE played
well. The house band and anyone who took the stage. (Which is why
I hung my head in shame watching you guys.) The talent up there was
incredible. (It's not PC talk either.)
I did get a kick outta Steve when he heard the first two beats
of that second tune. I caught an eyebrow raised for a second. Then
he proceeded to smoke it thru. Oh yeah, today I have these bright
green lines in my vision. (Let me guess, you have NEVER lost one of
those cords, have ya?)
After I left, I wanted to toss all my guitars into a bon-fire.

2736.52 | Thanks and a hat tip! | NWACES::HICKERNELL | But really, what could go wrong? | Wed May 26 1993 11:56 | 52 |
| Well, I'm still asleep - I got home at 1 AM and that's *way* past my
bedtime! Steve summed it up well. The best parts for me were: I got
to meet (and hear) Gonzo, Rob Woodburn, Tom T., Kevin McD., "Sakman",
Fred A. and, of course, The Bulldawg. (I already knew Bob D. and Rick
O.) I got to hold Kevin's one-year old Ben. (See Brian, you could've
brought them - I'll hold anyone's kid!) I got to play out for the
first time in a year. I didn't embarrass myself. I got to play Bob's
mint pre-CBS Mustang bass... mmm, nice!
On the down side: I had just installed a new DiMarzio humbucker on my
precious EB-0, did the wiring myself, and it went south after one tune.
Bob was gracious enough to let me play his Mustang - thanks, Bob! I
didn't get to hear Rick or Rich B. play. Actually, I didn't get to hear
Steve and Fred's "Key To The Highway" very well either, 'cuz I was on
stage; I was here, they were over there, I was listening to what I was
playing, that sort of thing. I'm afraid I didn't hear Sakman, either -
same reason.
Steve went on first, and you boys were right - he's got taste. The band
warmed him up with one reasonably-paced tune, then asked him to burn on
a faster-than-you-know-what one. He held his own, no problem. Overall,
I want to hear more of the Dawg.
Tom T. directed the band with his tasty playing and great singing. I
gotta hear this guy's band. Now where *is* Fitchburg, anyway?
The band brought up a lady named Janice, I think, who fronts the Slow
Fuse Blues Band in this area. Man, can she sing! Gotta hear more of her,
too.
Kevin McD. ripped out one tune on his Les Paul while I held his kid, who
obviously was used to this kind of noise level. Kevin just whetted my
appetite to hear more of him. He was playing through the harp player's
silverface Super Reverb, and it sounded killer.
And Fred was a surprise. I mean, the guy's a bass player - how good a
guitarist can he be, right? %^) Well, he's terrific, and we all lusted
after his Strat; looks like the one on the Derek and the Dominos album
cover. He and Steve had a raucous jam on "Key To The Highway" while I
tried to remember the complex changes.
Overall, we gotta get Rick and Rich to play. And I've never seen so many
Strats in one place outside of a music store.
And don't worry, Coop, you were there in spirit - we took your name in
vain more than once (the neon chord triggered some comments!). %^)
My thanks also to Bob, Rob, Jeff and Ed, the house band, for putting up
with all of us - it was a great time.

No, Fred is a guitarist AND a bass player. More specifically, he
neither plays bass like a guitarist nor guitar like a bassist.
He's extremely legitimate on both instruments.
Only one of that kind I've ever met.
Oh, did I mention he also has a great voice? And that you'll never

"one tune for the road". I had a blast! My only regret is that I missed all the
other people who showed up and left before I got there... oh well, maybe next

can find a place a jam out like that again! I'll learn the real lyrics instead

It was also nice to see Sakman! The last time I saw Bill was at one of my

One of the great things about being a keyboard player: I've been to
quite a few open blues jams and each time I've been the ONLY keyboard
player!
db
p.s. Well, of course, another reason I didn't go was that I was dying

Let's see, it was flat, black, electronic and had fewer than 88 keys.

| Well' last night was great. A lot of great players showed up. I can't
remember them all but a couple that come to mind and definately worth
mention. First' a woman named Margo came and played a few tunes for us
on her "59" Les Paul....the only thing that sounded sweeter than her
guitar was her voice. This woman can sing the blues. I think we talked
her into comeing back in the near future.
Second was a guitar man from hell......actually his name was Mike and
he was from Manchester N.H. He came onto stage with two Strat's. Just
incase he wore one out. If you want a Strat to look like Fred
Abatelli's loan to this man for an hour! I expected to see a flash
fire.
We also had a visit from Nashua's finest! Apparently people in Hollis
were complaining about the volume. Geee! Maybe thats why my head is
ringing today.
Anyway those are the highlights I remember.....Oh except for the girl
that requested a tune at the end of the night while we breakin down.
She couldn't focus her eye's....and I still don't know what is was
she wanted us to play.

2736.74 | I admit it, I kinda enjoy having drunks at gigs at times | DREGS::BLICKSTEIN | DOS Boot | Wed Jun 09 1993 10:10 | 42 |
| re: .-1
Y'know, we all complain about the drunks that show up at gigs, but
I have a confession to make.
They do, on occasion, make for some very funny memories and I sorta
find them they add "flavor" to the gigging experience.
We're lucky - we RARELY even see a someone who is both drunk and
causing any problems. And to be honest, when we do, it's usually
at a place where we knew we would see one - i.e. a place we could
avoid if we wanted to, although unfortunately, places where people
drink heavily sometimes can be the most fun gigs.
I actually have a list of "favorite drunks" because, in my experience,
people become extremely "quirky" (often in an interesting/funny kind
of way) when they are drunk.
One that comes to mind immediately is this one women who was constantly
trying to talk to one or the other of us. Only problem is "how".
Like she would stand in the middle of the dance floor, not dancing
and thus people crashing into her, about 30 feet from us and start
talking to us as if she was standing right next to us and we weren't
playing at 102 decibels!
I mean, from way across the room, you could see her looking directly
at you, and her lips moving and making facial expressions like she
really wanted something, but of course you'd have NO CHANCE of hearing
her.
And she was doing this pretty much constantly ALL NIGHT. What's more
is that at times she'd get really frustrated when you'd shrug your
shoulders and hold your palms up to indicate to her "I can't hear you".
One thing though: remember I mentioned we "KNOW" where we're going to
get drunks? These are places that seem to have a mysterious
connection to Alan Starr (places he plays): B&L in Hillsboro, NH; the
Bellringer in ??,MA - and the New England regional "drunk headquarters"
the infamous "La Bec Rouge" (they seem to have a "3 drunk minimum").

I listened to 3 Sides this a.m. on the way to work. To me, Nuno
is one of the tastiest rhythm players ever. He's quirky and
very melodic too. Their vocals are really tight and not at all
grating like 99% of the others who just scream - lots of creative
harmonies. In many ways, they're very similar to alot of the
weirder Beatles songs.
I'd guess that most of the diehard metal folks don't like 'em
because they're too "pop". For those who don't like metal for
all those reasons, Extreme may be for you.
I can also see where they could move away (mature?) from the
hard edge and really make a hell of an album.

| Well, I had a great time last night. I thoroughly enjoyed playing
those three tunes with Steve and four-fifths of DB Wilfred. It was
great to meet and hear Heather and Willy for the first time, and see
and hear Dave, Fred and Steve again. My wife said ours was the best
music played, though to be fair, we didn't get to hear Gonzo play much.
Curiously, they didn't just bring one or two jammers up on stage to
join or replace house band members; the six of us just replaced the
entire band. Which worked out well, come to think of it. %^)
On the down side, Fred's amp blew a fuse he couldn't replace, the amp
Steve used didn't cut through (just not loud enough), Dave had to set
up the keys on the floor behind a PA main and no one could hear him.
I thought the house band members could each play their instruments,
though they weren't a blues band, but it was apparently one of their
first gigs together; I'll leave it at that. As for the organization of
it all, the less said the better. And Sakman didn't show - must have
gone to Bon Jovi instead. %^)
Overall, I'd say we're batting .500 on this jam.
Maybe the next time the Bulldawg comes up we'll have an "invitational"
in someone's basement. That way we can schedule it so the mythical
Alan Starr can be there, and we can get Rick O. to play.

Don't want to offend anyone. Let's just say
that it wasn't da blues they were playing. I,

Oh blaspheming stereotyper!
Once upon a time in the flatlands (i.e., Flatsachusetts), I had the immense good
fortune to attend just *one* of MIT's annual jazz concerts, put on by faculty and
students. Blew me away.
Should you ever have the good fortune to have the level of timing *and* general

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ed Keltz passed away Saturday. Ed had complications from a brain
hemorrhage that must have happened during sleep last Thursday.
There will be services tonight at the Rochette Funeral Home
on Kinsely Street in Nashua. The services will run from 6:00
to 9:00.
I knew Ed as an excellent drummer and good friend. I had the privilege
of playing guitar in a blues band with Ed for the past four months. In
addition to being a great blues drummer, Ed was also a great father,
husband to his wife Beth, top notch mechanic, biker, percussionist in
the NH philharomic, luthier, and a lot of other things that there just
wasn't time to learn about.
Those of us who were fortunate enough to know Ed will miss him very
much.

2736.166 | Sorry for the emotional response.... | SSDEVO::LAMBERT | I made life easy just by laughing | Mon Oct 11 1993 14:43 | 13 |
| This is extremely hard for me. Ed was one of my best friends, probably
_the_ best drummer I've ever played with, taught me more about camping
(woodcraft), fishing, skiing, and a bunch of other stuff than anyone
else ever tried to impart on me. Leaving he and his wife behind in NH when
I moved to CO was probably the hardest part of the move.
Rest well, my Friend. If anyone from ::GUITAR is going to the wake (I
can't make it since I'm 2000 miles away - figures) please do me a favor
and pay my respects to his wife, Beth. My wife spoke to her this morning,
but somehow it just ain't the same thing.

No need for apologies, man. We're all sorry about losing one of our
own. You were obviously closer to Ed then most of the rest of us.

| I work with Beth, Ed's wife and we had become quite close over the past
few months. I met Ed when they came all the way down from Nashua to a
gig I was doing in a real yuck bar in Fitchburg. Blew me away when they
walked in! I noticed him walking all around the place and wondered
what he was doing. During break I found out, he was checking out my
Bass amp, he really loved the sound and told me to never ever sell it.
I never will... He took the time to talk to me about my bass playing
commenting on my technique, style and feeling. Comming from a real
musician (since I'm just a newcommer compared to most of you!), it
meant the world to me and gave me tremendous confidence! I remember
them dancing together while we played and then asking him to sit in for
a couple of numbers! Wow! What energy! It was thoroughly enjoyable to
be able to play with him although I was a bit nervous! I also remember
comming back into work on Monday and Beth saying that he wouldn't mind
filling in once in awhile if I ever needed a drummer for a gig or two!
Even though it meant he'd be playing country! We almost got the chance
to do an entire gig with Ed but unfortunately he was booked that night.
He did send a good drummer in his place though but I regret not having
the chance - I know it would have been tremendous!
Saying goodbye last night was one of the most difficult things I've
ever done. I know we'll all be feeling the loss for a very long time.

| Does anyone know if "Blind Willy's" is going to have the weekly jam
tonight? I'd like to go and play a couple for Ed tonight.
Here's one for you Ed!

| I went down to Blind Willy's after rehersal last night, but the place
was closed up. Not sure if the placed folded or just closed for the
evening. Somehow I wouldn't be surprised if the place closed up for good.
Rock on Ed!

| I spent 2 different evenings with Gonzo. Both at Blind Willey's. I
enjoyed his open honesty about every topic. He was brutally honest
most of the time....my kinda guy...cracked me up. I also enjoyed
jamming with him......damn shame.

| I spent the same two evenings with Ed at Blind Willie's, and came away
with the same impression. My wife sat with him at the second jam and
thoroughly enjoyed their conversation; she was also severely bummed out
last night when I told her. I also dealt with Ed for a short time at
work when I was supporting a product he was using, and I think
"brutally honest" is a fair appraisal of him, one he would be proud of.
I think the world needs more people like Gonzo, not fewer. I'm just
sorry I didn't get to know him better. Rest easy, Ed.
