2730.0. "Bill Frissell" by POWDML::DAGG () Tue May 11 1993 18:31

For those of you who aren't big on Bill Frissell now,
his new disk "Have a Little Faith" might be worth
    checking out.

Its all covers, including Copland's Billy the Kid, some Ives
excerpts, a Madonna tune, a Dylan tune, and some others. The
arrangements are for guitar, clarinet, accordian, bass and drums.
Oh yeah, they also do a Souza march. Very nice.

I've heard him in Bass Desires, on the Monk in Motian disk,
and with his own bands, but this disk is by far may favorite.

He may not be completely in the bebop tradition of say Jim Hall,
but I think his playing fits very well into this recording.

Just listened to Frissel's latest recording "This Land". In somewhat
the same vein as "Have a Little Faith", but all originals. Really tasty.
His compositions are very nice. The group is alto, clarinet, drums
    bass and trombone.

I love the sound he's getting on this disk. If anyone knows
the equipment/treatments he uses, I'd be curious to hear. .

Has anybody heard Bill's CDs of music for the films of Buster Keaton?
    What are they like?

I have both of the CDs. The band is a trio with Joey Barron on drums
and ??? on acoustic bass. Musically it sounds like most of the later
Frissell stuff with of course more sparse instrumentation. There is
very little over-dubbing. Frissell uses acoustic guitar a lot through-
out both CDs. The recording is very good, sounding like a good 2-mic
    stereo mix.
