I was re-reading an article in Guitar Player from last year where GP quizzed a forum of acoustic guitar makers about the state of the art. The panel included such heavies as CF Martin III, Richard Hoover (Santa Cruz), Bob Taylor, and others. One of the others was Steve Klein of Calafornia. I have been seeing Klein guitars in GP and other places for years. He makes one of the most radical acoustics around - Kasha-style braces, split bridges and unusual shapes. Trouble is, he makes only custom instruments and they don't show up in stores - at least not in Denver. I have never seen one and have only heard Joni Mitchell play one and that was in a video, hardly the place to judge these things. Have any of you had any experience with these? Paul

Klein also makes electrics using necks and bridges from Steinberger. He had talked about marketing a bass version but never seen one. I've heard the electrics on CDs, but the guys playing them (Henry Kaiser, David Torn) are so heavily into signal processing, it's hard to say what the things really sound like. Mandolin Bros. carries the electrics in their catalog, they may also handle his acoustics. Brian |
