The Music Emporium is a good store for acoustic instruments. I don't think
they carry electric or if they do, it is not their focus. The store is in
Porter Square on Mass Ave.

I should add that they do work on electric instruments. I took my Les Paul
there for a tune-up and was very please with the work.

Though I have not been there in a few years, I believe it is still on
Massachusetts Ave near the Porter Square MBTA station.

| As earlier replies mentioned, the emphasis is on acoustic instruments.
They have plenty of guitars, but this is *the* place to go if you are
looking for fiddles, mandolins, banjos, dulcimers, etc. What electric
gear they do have is mostly used stuff taken in trade. They also have
*lots* of music books, including most of the Oak and Amsco method
books.
Re: .3
The "other" music store down the street is Cambridge Music Center.
Lotsa used/vintage electric guitars and amps.

Cambridge Music is "in" Porter Sq. (well, a half block out.)
The Music Emporium is down Mass Ave by two or three blocks, or cross
streets. Check out both. (Isn't there another right in that area? All
on the same side of the street? Up back towards Harvard Sq?)
You can also check out Boston Music Co. on Tremont Street. Then
cruise over and hit the shops around Bezerkly. Sounds like a great
day to me!
Rick.
PS: I walked into Performance Music(?) in Woburn Saturday. Not
much stock. Not much selection. The sales droids didn't
jump on my case though, that's a positive note. Matter of
fact, they were civil. Whoa!

| ...and there's a great guitar repair store, Mouradian's (unrelated to
the gig bag folks) located just above the Music Emporium. Worth a walk
up just to see all the things people do to guitars!

| re: .3
Cambridge Music moved down to street level a few
years ago. Upstairs (as .5 said) is a one room shop where
Jim Mouradian does his stuff - a friend of mine had Jim
build him a custom guitar and it's beautifully built.
Also upstairs is a guy named Bill Clark who (supposedly)
repairs amps. From my experience, I wouldn't recommend
him.
re: Performance Music - I'm really fond of that store! They
do carry a limited line of guitars, but some are cool (such
as Blade). All of their people seem to have figured out that
if you treat customers well, they BUY STUFF. (Rocket Science?)
I just had "Mike", their amp guy, go over my '63 Super Reverb
and am quite pleased with the way my amp was treated, I was
treated, and most importantly, the results.

| Also check out Cambridge Music's other store; it's downtown
near Berklee, around the corner from Jack's Drum Shop where
East Coast Music Mall had their store for a while. Pound for
pound, CM is the best two used guitar shops in the city.
Btw, Jim Mouradian built that crazy green bass you see Chris
Squire using occasionally (like in Owner of a Lonely Heart
video). The bass player from Extreme has one too, in black.
Jim is also the one who put together Nuno's famous unfinished
guitar, that eventually evolved into the Washburn N4.

Re; Performance Music.
If they picked up another line or two, the place would be
a little bit better. The only two things I noticed were G&L's
and Hofners.
Like I said, they were good folks.

| They do have a limited line. Still, its refreshing to go into
a store and not see the same old thing. Their main guitar lines
include Blade (although they are out of stock right now), G&L,
ESP, B.C.Rich, and Fernandez. They're big fans of Hughes &
Kettner. When they do have used instruments, they don't seem to
bleed you the way some of the chain music stores do (hmmmmm what
was that name again.... Pappa's?, Mommy's?) :')
If you want Fender, Gibson, Ibanez, Peavey, Marshall, etc. there are a
lot of places to go. After a while though, they all look the same.

I think I saw a sign on the door of Music Emporium
saying they're moving to a new location on Mass.
Ave. in Lexington. Anyone know where the new
place is exactly, if they're changing the stuff
they carry etc. ?
Dave - who liked the sound of a little Trace Acoustic
amp they had at the old store
