2710.0. "The Good News Note" by SPEZKO::A_FRASER (Mobius Loop; see other side) Thu Apr 22 1993 05:56

Was jamming with Dave Sakelaris and a bunch of folks last night
and Dave asked me to post a note to say, quote:

                              "Sakman's got a gig!"

Got himself a full-time job yesterday, so we had a soupcon of
beer and played the blues in celebration. He sends his best
wishes to all, and reminds some of you that he's expecting to
hear from you - you know who you are...

It is with mixed feelings that I have to announce that I have joined
the nearly departed: Friday, 6/24, will be my last day at Digital.

I didn't ask to be laid off, but it's going to be a good thing. I should
have left a year ago, when it became clear to me that my skills weren't
useful to my department, and I realized I wasn't enjoying my work.
Although I have nothing lined up right now, I will have the opportunity
to try to find work I enjoy, and frankly, I'm looking forward to it.
That's why I'm posting this in this note.

A significant reason for my procrastination in finding another job was
this notes conference. It became the part of work I looked forward to
most, a place where sanity reigned (believe it or not) and people
discussed things in which I was interested. In the three or four years
that I participated in this conference I learned more about musical
equipment and the music industry than I ever knew before. Due *solely*
to this conference and its participants I have upgraded my personal gear
to at least the standards of the eighties - up from that of the sixties.
I have also heard some of you play some mighty good music, and you have
given me the opportunity to wisecrack with the some of the best,
something I've done too little of lately.

And I have met some of the best people ever, some personally and some only
through their notes. I only hope I can keep in contact with most of you,
but I know how difficult that will be. I think this is a pretty unique
group, and I know that twenty years from now when I look back at my short
time at DEC I will remember this conference as much as the people I worked
with. And I will remember the experience as "one of those times" that
    don't come often.

I wish I could thank each of you for the pleasure of your company; since I
can't do it personally, and there are too many of you to name individually,
I have to do it this way. I do want to say that I have read a number of
old notes in here and have particularly enjoyed Danny Weber's histories of
guitars (and descriptions of his own) and Brian Rost's numerous and
incredibly informative notes on bass equipment, bands and the industry.

I wish you who remain with Digital the best of luck.

    Dave

Sorry to hear this Dave; your contributions have been a significant
part of the fun in here lately. You will be missed.

    Good luck to you Dave.

I will really miss the sense of humor you brought to this notesfile.

Hope to continue to see you at jams, gigs, etc.

Perhaps good news for you, Dave, but it's certainly bad news to the
rest of us who will miss your cheerful notes very very much. I'm sure
    sad to see you go.

You're right, bud...the Notes files are the best part of the
organization anymore...get an Email address & let us know what it is so
you can stay in touch. America On-Line is a relatively cheap way to
get on the Internet, if you've got a PC or mac.

Thanks for the kind words. I'll do all right - I've got an interview
already! And I'll send someone in here my address when I land
somewhere, and we can go back to abusing each other. %^)

Thanks again for the good times.
