| His rendition of Down Yonder is great. I have it along with many other
artist on "Flatpicking Guitar Festival. I've seen a few of his
instructional books in Homespun Tapes and a few other catalogs I
recieve. I'll try to remember to look up adresses and input them
for ya.

| Most of us old enough to remember the '60s look to Doc Watson as the
counrty picker who took the acoustic guitar and extended it well beyond
it role as a rhythm instrument. I'm not sure how many albums Doc's
made, but my favorites are the first 5 or 6 he recorded for Vanguard in
the '60's - DOC WATSON, DOC WATSON & SON, SOUTHBOUND, for example. And
there is a terrific 2-fer on Vanguard called THE ESSENTIAL DOC WATSON,
which is a 2-record concert set. Also, about 1982, Doc recorded an
album called THE GUITAR ALBUM - all picking. It's great.
Doc's work on the first WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN album by the Dirt
Band is wonderful. Check it out.

| Theres a guy in Merrimack selling THE ESSENTIAL DOC WATSON CD. Its
listed in the COOKIE FOLK conference in note 427 "FOR SALE" I think
he's asking $8.00 for it.

And Kicking Mule has a video of a concert with him and some other
people for 24 bucks.

| I particularly like Doc's early stuff because it's folkier and has more
variety. He used to play banjo and harmonica and sing unaccompanied ballads
in addition to the super guitar work.

| I saw Doc at Union Grove NC last year.
Sad to say, but I think he is past his best.
Even sadder, the vacuum which his grandson Richard (Merle's son) is
trying to fill is larger than his ability to do so IMHO.
You can keep the Tony Rice's of this world. Technically he may be
faultless but he is also soulless - Doc has never stripped the soul
out of the music and always leaves the edges rounded.

| A lot of Doc's early breaks are available (tab) on the Oak
Publications' book on his style. I'll get the appropriate
title for you tomorrow.
BTW -- Trivia: His name is Arthel. "Doc" was a nickname
given to him after Doctor Watson of Sherlock Holmes fame.
Check into the old Folkway discography, Vanguard "Live on
Stage" 2-fer with Merle, "Strictly Instumently" with Flatt
and Scruggs (Columbia).
Just a thought.
