2697.0. " The Perfect Set. " by SOLVIT::SNORAT::OLOUGHLIN (The fun begins at 80!) Thu Mar 25 1993 10:51

Anytime I check out a local band, I'm always
amazed to hear a 70's vintage Bob Seager tune pop
out. Ya gotta play what the wanna hear I guess.
But it got me to thinking.

If you could decide what the set would consist
of - what would it be? There are sone tunes out
there that are so cool and would move the rock and
roll bone of a dead man, that just never get done.
Greg House has me hummin' that tune by Mission Of
Burma right now. I'd have that in a set, fer sure.
Another one I like was Julian Cope's, "Trampoline".

So, again, if you could decide the set, (the
hell with what the audiance wants) what would you do?
Or, are you guys doing it all ready?

         Go for it.

         Rick.

Most clubs we play at expect 45 minutes to an hour per set. At some
gigs (like weddings) set length may be stipulated in the contract.

a (1) 60 minute set. Your mileage may vary.

For See No Evil, it tends to be 10 or 11 songs, maybe 12 sometimes. Most
rock songs seem to average about four minutes nowadays, so 11 songs at 4
minutes each = 45 minutes.

Same here:
9:00pm - 9:45pm
10:00pm - 10:45pm
11:00pm - 11:45pm
12:00am - 1:00am

My country band plays four 45 minute sets, with about a dozen songs in
    each set.

On the other hand, my friend's alternative band found that a lot of the
crowd would leave between their sets, so they played longer sets to
keep the crowd there and dancing. They'd play a normal one for the
first set and then two longer ones and end the evening, the long ones
were usually about 90 minutes each for the second and third set.

Worked real well for them, your mileage may vary. Seems like it takes
between 4-6 songs before you really get the crowd up for dancing, then
you play about 3-4 more and take a break and a lot of 'em leave.

Always save your good stuff for later also...
And NEVER wait too long between songs. The best sets are ones where
you get 'em on the dance floor and don't give 'em a chance to sit down
    between songs...

    (IMHO)

My old GB band was the same - 45 min with about 12 tunes.
But I think there should be less songs - more like 8. Dance
bands will groove a tune for 10 minutes and slowly turn up
the heat. I said before that I felt like George Harrison with
all the 4 minute max tunes. Soloist never get to stretch - just
state that melody and get back to the vocal.

Yuck City to me. The most fun I ever had with that band was a 10
minute jam after setup - and that happened just once. Other than
"Cause we ended as Lovers" and "Johnny B. Goode", there was no
    	stretching out.

Also, as a dancing audience member, why would I want a different
song/beat/style every 3 to 4 minutes? If it were a singles club,
why would I want that slow tune to end before I asked her what
    	her name was?

To me, we musicians should extend that solo a bit and groove that
outtro more. Heck, acts that are still in the basement could
conceivably come out with 25 or so tunes.

    	My 2 bits - Tom

Actually, it depends on what you're talking about.

Clubs, according to what I'm told, WANT you to take breaks because
that's when people order the most drinks.

At weddings, they're happy to have you play all night.

Hmm...my observation would say that's also when most people leave.
They won't be buying drinks on their way out, and certainly won't be
buying drinks after they're gone. I'd be interested in seeing which
    approach produced the best result.

    This is an interesting rathole

It seems that about 40-45mins is the universal set length, same
here. One thing I dont particularly agree with is leaving your
good songs till last. This is not really a good idea. Think about it
possibly the reason you leave your best material is so that
(unconciously) you finish the gig on a high note. I used to do
this and on a 4 set night, the first set would start slow, second warmup
third kick and fourth take off, problem is at most of my gigs during
the last hour (4th set ) people seem to have that one drink that sets
them over the edge and it really doesn't matter what you play (within
    reason).
One thing I need to have is within the first 2 - 3 songs I have to
do something that kicks or I just find it hard to get going.(its this
reason I don't like playing weddings or function gigs). The best gigs
for me are where I get to do a full sound check, have a shower (o'night
gigs are the best) then have a couple of drinks and go on and start
with "All fired UP" then "Early Warning" then "Summer 69" or whatever.
If I have to play "Moondance" "Romeo and Juliet" "Step In Step
Out" etc Its hard to get going.
One thing which always seems to happen I call the third set blues
I start to go off the boil a bit, things start to sound funny,
motivation drops a bit and I don't feel comfortable, It passes within
a couple of songs but always seems to happen.
