2676.0. "Questions about Fender Power Jazz Bass" by WELCLU::GREENB (Daydream Nation) Mon Feb 01 1993 09:13

What do all those knobs and switches on a Power Jazz do, apart from
    make it sound different....?

It has three rotary pots, one of which is indented at 5, plus one 3
position pickup selector, plus another 3-position switch. Presumably
this is for active/passive mode, but what is the third position for.

FWIW, without knowing too much about the controls, it is still a nice
    bass.

The pots are probably master volume, pickup balance and master tone,
with the balance the one with the detent.

I suspect that the third position on the second switch is some sort of
booster...what does it sound like to you? 8^)

It just sounds..... different. It has to be said the tonal variations
on this bass are enormous, but it staill has that Fender sound that I
    love so much.

2676.3Could it be this?JUPITR::DERRICOJDefy The Laws Of TraditionSat Feb 13 1993 01:4329
Most likely, the configuration goes like this:

First stacked knob set:

      Center - Master volume/passive volume
      Outer - Pickup balance

Second Stacked knob set:

Center - Active bass (boost/cut)/Passive tone
      Outer - Active treble (boost/cut)

Third control:

      Four position switch:

             1 - Active tone.
             2 - Active with mid-boost.
             3 - Passive tone.
             4 - Standby

I haven't seen this one yet, but this would typically be the setup for
the Jazz Bass Plus, Jazz Bass Plus IV, Kubicki X-Factor on the 3-knob setup.

Oh... Also, they are probably using the Lace Sensor pickups...
As far as my last note goes, the settings are probably close - from memory.

2676.5Finally worked it all out...WELCLU::GREENBDaydream NationThu Feb 25 1993 06:0913
Well, I figured it out -

    Rotary 1 - Volume
Rotary 2 (with centre indent) - tone, works in active & passive modes
Rotary 3 - active tone, goes from really wiry to really deep.

    3-position toggle switch 1 - pickup selection
    3-position toggle switch 2 - passive/active/active with mid boost.

Truly a lovely bass, fits my smallish hands exactly, has a nice fast
action for when I need that, and a whole range of very useable sounds.
