I think Jonathan's guitar work has really matured over the years. In particular, the playing on "My Career As A Home Wrecker" compares with axe-meisters like Scott Williamson, Hasil Adkins and David Peel. Brian | |||||

I stage a managed a show featuring Jonathon Richman and the Modern Lovers. I was mic'ing the drum kit ( a 'normal' coliseum style set: kick, snare, hat, rack, rack, floor, floor, ride, crash, crash ) when the drummer said, "Don't bother...Jonathon will want to change things." Sure enough, when JR came out to sound check, he took one look at the drum kit and then asked the drummer to remove everything except kick, snare, and one cymbal. I asked Jonathon, "Why?"; he said he was trying to get at the essence of rock n' roll. The show they put on was great! Very basic, perhaps limited, but expertly performed. Appealing tunes. Oh yeah, no monitors, please. Too high tech for Jonathon. Very appealing |
